Ubuntu :: Can't Send Files, Start Video Calls?
Jun 30, 2010
How come I cant send files, start video calls etc while using this? The option is there but isn't highlighted and I'm unable to press it.
Is this something to do with the person I'm chatting to, or something else?

I'm running lucid. I have attempted several times to place a video call to Google talk contacts from empathy. The voice works fine and video from party is received successfully, but empathy won't broadcast my video. I know it's not a hardware issue.

I have a ZTE MF112 mobile broadband modem, which comes with Windows drivers and software. This software allows not only connect to Internet, but also send SMS and place calls (as in you dial number in program and when you're connected, sound goes through the sound card). As far as I know, almost any USB mobile modem comes with application to send SMS via its GSM connection. Now the question is - is there any vendor-independent software that runs under Linux and allows you to use your mobile broadband modem to turn your PC into larger mobile phone? I want at least to be able to send and receive SMS using PC + mobile modem.

I while back I tried installing Skype form the software centre but for some reason it wouldn't work. Now, with a fresh install of Lucid, I see that Empathy comes pre-installed and allows video chatting. Is it worth setting up a account? Does anyone have experience with Empathy?

What is the real difference between system calls and normal function calls. Ultimately function calls too would be passed to kernel for some or the other work.

Got a bit of a problem where xorg can't start kdm. I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

I need to write a script. In which, the 2nd part commands need to run under another bash shell environment. The enter_antoher_bash_env.sh will setup a new shell environment, call "bash". The rest commands need to run under the new env. (I cannot change this script too. )If I run these command one by one manually, it works of course. If I put them into a script, enter_another_bash_env.sh won't return because it calls "bash" command inside.

I'm building a Linux From Scratch system and partially automating it. I will likely want to do it again, and I would like to try to almost completely automate it.
My current approach is a script that takes an input file and sequentially runs each line in a new instance of bash. If one fails, it gives me the number of the step that failed so that I can use the "--step" option to resume after I fixed the issue.
This has some problems:
A varible created on one line will not be accessible on the next line. This is because each line is run in a separate shell (the reason for this is so that the commands in the input file and the script's internal variables can't interfere). You can't switch users or use chroot, again because each line is run in a separate shell.
What would be nice is to be able to start a bash process in the background and send commands to its stdin. I guess that a named pipe would work, but the named pipe will be gone after a chroot. Is there a way to do it without relying on the filesystem? Also, how do I know if the command failed?

What would be a nice, simple command to go through all files in a directory (no sub-directories), and change all the MP4 Video files I have to MP3 audio files (keeping the original filenames except for changing the "mp4" extension to "mp3")?
The files in question were videos taken with one of those Flip cameras, but I only need the audio off of it.

I updated to KDE 4.2 when it came out on openSUSE 11.1 and things were working OK.
Now I can no longer send files to the Trash. I get an error in Dolphin saying "The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually."
I deleted a bunch of stuff from my Trash and I have 1.7GB free on my /home partition so it's not a lack of space.

I'm trying to get some insight on how to move forward. I have a bit of a problem. I am just starting out in unbuntu and I have no experience working with 2 os on my computer (coming from windows). I have a lot of files (music, pictures, movies) in windows, but I want to use them on unbuntu. Is there a way for me to have both os access those files, or better yet, is there a way to send all my files to unbuntu, so I can start deleting all my stuff in windows? At the moment, I'm planning to burn all my files to dvds (in windows), then just drop them off in unbuntu, but I'd love it if there was a way which didn't involve me burning tons of dvds...Oh yea, and programs too... can I transfer them, or do I need to just reinstall them on unbuntu (like stepmania, guildwars, dvd shrink, kmplayer, etc

I typically use rm to delete files, but they don't end up in my trash folder in case I want to recover them. How do I make that happen and how do I access my trash folder via terminal? Doing me best to work from terminal rather than GUI and this one has me stumped. I am using Mint Julia.

I use in Ubuntu proftpd to send files with a little script over the internet to my website.
If I write all these scripts it's a lot of work and my first question is what is the best way to send files over.
For example do you need to type:
put /directory/file.gz /www/file.gz ? or can it shorter? like
put /directory/file.gz /www/ because then ftp complains it can't create file

+ I had struggled with getting it to work on 11.3, KDE 4.4. Brought in the KDE 4.5 repos and did zypper dup with fabulous success. Bluedevil 1.0-2.9 was a charm.
+ We're only days away from 11.4, and that was so painless I figured I'd go ahead and upgrade to 11.4. After hours of RTFM on zypper I got all the 11.4 repos (all I could find) and did zypper dup again.
+ Smooth, painless. Geen probleme.
+ Except: - the upgrade also upgraded bluedevil to 1.0-3.8.1. I've tried rolling back but the problems remain.
+ The problems are: - I cannot send files from the PC to the phone, although I can send files from the phone to the PC.
- The PC prompts are very short-lived and are obscured by the taskbar unless you are primed for them to bring up the notification manager instantly, so pairing from the phone to the PC is difficult
-I cannot browse the phone despite the app suggesting I can. I also had to manually install a directory (/home/$user/$phone_name) to avoid an error message. Presumably the app tries to mount the phone to this directory, but it does not succeed.
+ I do think I have all the necessary devel files, but would love to do a file list comparison with someone who has this working on OS 11.4/KDE 4.5.5 Yes, I know this is beta so don't abuse me, I'm more than willing to do trials and submit explicit data as I have here. But I also would like to get it to work. I had it working on 11.3 / KDE 4.5.5. FWIW, pretty much everything else works flawlessly on OS 11.4. Firefox 4 beta has a few problems, but that is not an OS 11.4 issue...
