Ubuntu :: Boot Into Terminal Rather Then Booting Into The GUI Desktop?
Aug 2, 2011
I have a question..Is there a way I can boot into terminal rather then booting into the GUI desktop?? Then do a "startx" command if i need to go into the GUI desktop.

I know I have seen/read this someplace before but I cannot find it.
Just installed ver 10.4 -64 bit desktop, I want to make some modifications to the environment -- want to boot in terminal mode and not desktop (for fun and giggles), but if I open up a terminal, enter su- and password, then edit the (I hope) appropriate file it comes back and says that I do not have permission.
Is it because I installed the desktop version, or because I don't know enough linux to shoot myself in the foot yet? Should I go back to square one and install the server version then configure it so that it starts up the desktop?

Hey everyone I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux so please bear with me . I recently installed 10.10 on my new htpc. The initial install went great, until I went to install the updated driver for my graphics card. What I did was I downloaded the driver off of nvidia. Then I did these steps:
1. ctrl-alt-f1
2. logged in
3. sudo services gdm stop
4. I then located the driver package that I downloaded and ran it, it seemed to install fine (except for an error about some install script? but it let me proceed)
5. sudo services gdm start
It went to the gdm/ubuntu desktop. However I then connected it via HDMI, and the resolution was way off (top bar was not even displayed on TV) and I tried many different settings but no luck in fixing it. Next after restarting it did not automatically boot to the gdm/desktop. Instead it stayed at the command line login (the ctrl-alt-f1 screen).
tl;dr : 1. How to make it automatically boot to the gdm/desktop after I updated my gpu driver
2. How to fix the resolution for HDMI from my gpu to my TV. (DVI works fine

I'm using a system with nvidia graphics card gt220 with driver version 190. I tried installing mplayer and that installation procedure upgraded my nvidia driver. The installation was not successful and it gave an error that there are some broken packages. I ignored that warning and shutdown the system. When i tried to boot again after some time, it took me to a terminal instead of login screen.
I tried to recover the system using "report broken packages" option from recovery mode. I could able to delete all the broken packages. After removing all the broken packages, i tried to install nvidia drivers using command "apt-get install nvidia-glx-190".

i'm running 9.10. For no reaso whatsoever that I can fathom, ubuntu now boots directly to a terminal. I use startx to get to the desktop, but if i do that, after a short while, the screen will go black and then ubuntu will take me to the GUI log-in screen. I noticed that I'f I was using firefox I would have to go into system monitor to kill the process before I could restart the browser. I also noticed while doing this that most processes seem to be running twice.

When I boot without X or hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 I have very low screen resolution.(large font) I believe default is 640x480
Normal for the screen is 1920x1200.
Can I change it?
Does it have to do with Nvidia?

how I might try using Recovery Mode to fix whatever is wrong? When i'm booting, I no longer get the gui login prompt. Instead I get a Terminal-like login prompt. I can login and everything but I'm a noob and don't know what to do. I booted to recovery mode and selected fix broken packages but this didn't fix the problem. is there anything else I can try?

I don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?

I've noticed on other Linux distributions that after boot up and logging off the console screen clears and provides basic information like the Linux distribution and then under it the login prompt. How can I do this for openSUSE 11.3?After I install or reboot I still have all the boot up stuff shown and when I logout after performing some work my commands are still shown. I boot the system to runlevel 3 and barely use the GUI but would like the screen to clear everything after boot up and logging out.

Is there an application for booting into windows with just a click directlyfrom the desktop in ubuntu without having to reboot and make a choice in GRUB? From what I've heard, the laptops from dell that ships with a ubuntu netbook edition has a choice in the power menu for booting into windows. Is there a similar program available to the public?

Ubuntu doesn't load. While booting, it displays an error message saying some of the lists in ipblock couldn't be loaded, followed by a red-coloured "[fail]". Then, the screen goes black and shows nothing more. So, how do I stop ipblock from starting at startup (from the command line)?

get the delay from booting into gnome to actually getting up your desktop? Mine seems to boot, come to a purple background with a pointer, then after a while of waiting the panels and my actual background loads. Just wandering if anyone else gets the same. Edit > Happens regardless of what drivers i use for graphics so it's not an issue of open/closed drivers.

I use the SMXI script to install my graphics drivers (nvidia). It hasn't been booting to desktop for a while though. If I just run a
Code: Select allservice gdm3 start
the desktop starts though. Here's my xorg file.
Code: Select allSection "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
[code]....
I've also tried doing a Xorg -configure to no success. I've also reinstalled the driver many times.

This has probably been asked about before.... I would like to start apps in desktop 2, 3 and 4. To start apps during boot, I use two different methods: The .xinitrc file in /home/dan works fine under: "Add your own lines here..." Startup Applications in Gnome | System works well as well. Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

I guess I messed around with Unity on Ubuntu 11 a bit too much without knowing too much about it. Here's what's been happening: I chose the 'cube' setting in CCSM, but after switching to it, Unity crashed. So I rebooted and X11 started, but no Unity. Which means no window borders or anything.
how I could set it up again? I disabled the login-screen, as I'm the only user, so I guess I have no chance to simply choose Gnome for example to boot into a full-featured desktop.

I have been running 10.04 since the launch after upgrading from 9.10. Today when I logged in as normal, instead of taking me to the desktop I get a white console on the top left corner with the normal login background. I typed 'sudo X' but it says the server is already active for display 0. Please advise what I can do. I am reasonablyew to Linux so apologies if this has been discussed before (but I couldn't find any info here or on google).
