View 6 Replies View RelatedI run Ubuntu 10.10. and I have one annoying problem. When I want to set my Desktop directory in terminal by typing this: "cd ~/Desktop" I get an error: "bash: cd: /home/izvanzemaljac/Desktop: No such file or directory".
I really dont know what to do, I checked Google for this error and I didnt find a solution.
just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP. I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. $X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.
I should know this but I figured I'd ask before I screw something up.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same).With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above.But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu,which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder.Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place
View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:
I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

3. Any general tips on how to reduce the amount ram that is used on startup? I am using somewhere around 750MB on startup, which is about double the amount Gnome uses. After a few hours of use, Xorg uses close to 1GB of memory.
4. Whenever I get a notification, they don't delete themselves, so when I click on the (i), I see tons of notifications. Is there a way to get them to delete themselves after they have been shown?
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.

I'd like this to automatically happen about once a week or so. It would be even better if it would tarball the copy also..but this isn't a 100% necessary.
Something like "XFOLDER" would be copied to "/backup/XFOLDER1.tar" then next time "/backup/XFOLDER2.tar" and so on.
I installed Kubuntu 9.1 and then I downloaded Xampp of Linux to the desktop, however I have to extract it to /Opt/lampp. And that's the problem. I don't seem to have access or permissions to ?? Now I want to use a cms: modx and I need to copy paste the cms files in the root folder. But I am not able to paste anything in the root folder. I figured out that apache directories are readonly for a general user. So how do I paste that as a super user? I know about the sudo command but that works only in the terminal. Is there a command to copy paste the whole directory from the terminal?

i'm confronting atm. I need to create a folder where ppl can copy files and i need to be sure that those files cannot be deleted after they are copied there. The folder will be accessed over network, and i need to be sure no one will delete somebody else's files.Also i need to tell you that i'm working with regular users, so creating a folder for each user and chown/chmod-ing it won't do the trick(allready tried and ended up with a whole lot of files in the parent directory).I also tried chattr +a but that doesn't allow them to write new files in the folder.
