I've installed some updates for Fedora 12 x64 and now I don't get the desktop, but a flashing cursor and no boot. After forcing a reboot it says something like "interrupting smolt update" and then shuts down. How do I get back to proper booting/desktop?

Anyone successfully installed AIR and iPlayer on F11?
I've switched to 32 bit Adobe flash, tried Autoten for AIR and Dangermouse's advice for iPlayer: url.html but it's not working, and trying to install AIR from url results in an endless busy downloading graphic .
I assume my problem is a lack of required packages, though I searched the repositories using YUM extender for the packages listed here: url.html and can't see them either as installed or available.
After a few updates i restarted fedora. But now it won't boot anymore.

Last night I couldn't access my webserver, so I ran downstairs and turned on the monitor, only to find a "GRUB" prompt on the screen. I don't really know much about grub, but it didn't seem to accept any input anyway, so I rebooted, and after the server went through all its hardware checks, the "GRUB" prompt reappeared, still unresponsive to any input.
Next I booted with the F11 DVD and selected "Rescue Mode" from the menu. That looked hopeful. I was able to mount my filesystem, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or how to fix it. The manual hasn't been too helpful, and I haven't found any "how to guides" that address this kind of thing.
How does a solid reliable system like this just stop working? How can I get it back on its feet, and is there anything I can do to prevent whatever happened from happening again? Am I doing anything wrong?
This server has been running nonstop and trouble-free for about four years now. I upgraded from F10 to F11 without incident. I'm running Apache httpd, Tomcat (through httpd via ajp13), and sshd (only accessible from the local network). I update everything with yum on a weekly basis. The server is on a private network with port 80 NATted through the cable modem and a wireless router. The wireless network is secured with WPA2 Personal.
I was just about to upgrade to F13 before this happened, and I'm now wondering if I should do a clean install and start over, or if installing F13 as an upgrade will fix whatever is wrong with the system. I've always felt you had to get everything in working order before you even think of upgrading, but I don't know if that applies to Linux. Will I just end up with a F13 system that won't boot?
I upgraded my F13 kernel from 2.6.33 to 2.6.34. But, the newer kernel isn't booting. It starts the booting process and then goes idle. how shall I troubleshoot?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn an attempt to ameliorate some other problems (lm_sensors, and loopback), and based on several forum entries, I decided to update the default f15 kernel (2.6.38.35) using kernel-2.6.39-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm from rawhide. It seemed to install without problems and when I rebooted it seemed to hang just before completing the boot process. The on screen boot messages ended with:
Started Display Manager
Started LSB: daemon for libvirt ........
Starting LSB: suspend/resume libvirt guests on shutdown/boot

about a dozen similar lines ending with
[25.030991 hci_cmd_timer: hci0 command tx timeout
then it apparently hangs
However, at that point I can log into to a console using Cntl-Alt-f2, so most, if not all, the crucial boot processes seem to have completed. There is an issue with the nVidia driver that I will deal with by modifying /boot/grub/grub.conf to re-enable nouveau, but I am stumped by what is causing the hang up. There is a certain amount of traffic regarding a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.04, but no solution other than it seems to be related to a BIOS bug (NFI)
what sub-system uses the "hci_cmd_timer" and why it might interfere with the boot process? Has anyone else run into a similar problem with f15?
Is there a better way to get an updated kernel in f15? I do want to keep all the Red Hat patches and back ports, so reluctant to build a kernel from scratch from upstream sources at kernel.org (and maybe just a bit apprehensive ;-})
First, a little background:
Laptop at issue: Toshiba Qosmio G25-av513
CD/DVD drive: Matshita DVD-RAM uj-845s
I attempted to do a proper install of Ubuntu 11.04 via booting of off CD. This failed because my CD/DVD drive is quirky and does not like burned CDs, though it likes factory pressed CDs just fine. I reattempted using a burned DVD, which almost worked, but my quirky drive just couldn't quite handle it. Replacing this drive is currently not an option, as I have no money for such things at this time.
I updated the CD/DVD drive firmware to 102D (apparently the most recent), but to no avail. I am comfortable with tearing apart electronics, so if anyone has knowledgeable suggestions about any kind of maintenance I could do to the drive I would be happy to hear it. Also, a (cheap!) factory pressed Ubuntu CD could work as well. Are such things available?
I further attempted booting via flash drive, but this failed as well, despite changing BIOS settings. If anyone has any useful suggestions on this, I would be happy to hear them. I attempted installation within Windows XP and was successful, though this is not an optimal solution. I have a second 60GB hard drive in this laptop that I would like to devote to a proper installation of Linux. It seems like I should be able to do this from within the current Ubuntu installation, but I am unsure of how to proceed.
Installed Fedora 12 from a DVD on clean HD. When I rebooted after the install it bought me back to the install options page. If I remove DVD it asks to put it back in so it can boot but it goes back to the install options page. What should I check or do?

The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it

I noticed that after a few days of work the plasma-desktop process is eating abnormal quantities of memory - resident size can grow up to 1 GB, by then KDE gets so unresponsive that you have to restart the session anyway.
I don't use desktop effects and no plasmoids either (even got rid of the folder view of desktop), the graphics are Intel 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default (intel) driver. I have dual monitor setup (1600x1200 and 1024x786), to get them work correctly I had to come up with a custom xorg.conf and xrandr (if someone thinks xorg.conf contents can be relevant, I can post them, too).
I've seen reports of memory leaks in versions 4.2, but none so severe as is my case.
Below is the top command (sorted by RSS) after just 5 days of usage, showing plasma-desktop consuming growing towards 500MB:
How to stop it consuming so much RAM? This is a real annoyance, since it slows down the whole machine because of induced swapping.
i am having a sound issue in fedora 14 64 bit. it is interesting because i have no sound when i use desktop applications such as vlc. however when i use videos or other flash sites the sounds works. although for some reason when i listen to music on grooveshark there is an annoying background noise. i wonder if the extra noise is a flash issue. but as far as the desktop application sound not working i am baffled. also kde noises work fine. when i go in to the speaker configuration and to the test it works perfectly.

I have been trying to make a shortcut to my downloads folder on my desktop but I only seem to be able to create "link to downloads" folder. I thought this was just the same thing as a shortcut but when I run some programs from the folder they do not work correctly. View 3 Replies View RelatedI was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.
(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")
I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)
Is there any way to get the content back?

So I restart,, and it freezes before I even get the error message. Pop in the live cd, booted up from it so I can talk to my fedora friend, and the reboot to try again. View 4 Replies View RelatedI managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?
When I booted up this morning the contents of my Home directory are all showing up on my desktop, and there is no single Home folder. How did this change, and how can I change it back so that the Home folder is on my Desktop with the contents inside of *it*?

I am currently running windows 7, i would like to be able to dual-boot with openSuse 11.3 64-bit, at the moment I have two seperate partitions each 111gb in size and i wish to install suse onto the D: partition without effecting my windows installation or any data on the c drive.
