Ubuntu :: Black Horizontal Lines On Desktop?

Aug 10, 2011

i have an dedll inspiron 8600 laptop. i just installed the new ubuntu, 11.0.4 i think. i installed from a usb. in the installation i wiped the whole drive with no partitions. i booted it while connected to the Internet and it loaded updates as it went. as far i know, everything went just as it was supposed to. the new os seems to be behaving just as it should.

however, (always a catch, right?) now, the right third of my screen appears to have thin black Phoenician blinds from top to bottom.

i can still partially see the icons in the top right corner, but not well enough to use them really, but they are active. i tried rebooting, but it didn't help.

i promised my girlfriend that this would make our dog poo machine run great and we could get more work done faster. i really hope i didn't make a mistake. the dog house gets me claustrophobic.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia 6150SE Horizontal Lines Crash

I have an e-machines computer model EL1200-05w, I believe my Graphics card is a 6150SE, what happens is that often about 3 or 4 times a day my computer displays horizontal stripes and the computer freezes completely and have to shut down the computer manually, this does not happen on Windows and have tried Fedora and Kubuntu with no avail, I do not know if it's a Kernel Issue or the graphics card. I have searched extensively and have found nothing. I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Linx by the way.

Ubuntu :: Horizontal Lines Cutting The Video In 10.04 With Nvidia N9500gt By Msi

May 18, 2010

I'm having video issues with my graphic card while using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32 bits. When I'm watching video (Either on ....., or a dvd or whatever) There are horizontal lines cutting the video, like when there's very fast movement it doesn't render the video smoothly and so I get to see like vertical divisions, I don't know how to explain it exactly. I have a driver installed, one that installed automatically when I turned normal effects on, but I don't even know which one it is, I'm very new to this.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Occasional Horizontal Lines In Video Playback?

Sep 8, 2010

I'm experiencing occasional flickering of horizontal lines during DVD playback. Another thread suggested turning off the de-interlacing but it is already turned off and turning it on doesn't change anything.

I have an AMD 64x2 4200+ with 3GB RAM running Ubuntu 9.10 64 with on board nVidia 6150SE video. It doesn't seem to matter which player I use (MPlayer, Movie Player, VLC, etc.), so I'm wondering if it may be some sort of video configuration problem.

Fedora :: Horizontal White Lines Appearing In Gnome 3?

May 29, 2011

I have weird graphical glitches in Gnome 3. They appeared in RC3 and now appear in the final release, but they didn't appear in beta. Here's what they look like, there are horizontal white lines appearing in different places where they shouldn't appear:

[URL[

it can be a result of this bug:[URL] but my glitches look different than the ones in there.

I have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. Should I just update my system regularly and hope it gets fixed, or is there some way to fix it by tweaking some settings or stuff? Maybe by installing the official ATI drivers? I'm not sure, but I've read somewhere that the official drivers don't work well with Gnome 3, is that true?

Ubuntu Installation :: Purple Horizontal Lines On Screen After Kernel Update

Jul 24, 2010

I just got the new kernel update (2.6.32-24-generic, according to "uname -r"), and I went to restart my computer as the system requested. When I selected the new kernel from the boot menu, the Ubuntu splash screen came up, and then it did this subtle alternating shades of purple horizontal line thing. Then a vertical line appeared towards the right of the screen, and then everything faded into this cloudy, bright white splotchy...thing.

The keyboard was still responsive, and hitting ctrl+alt+delete restarted the machine, at which point I tried to replicate the problem, but everything loaded normally this time. My questions are: What the heck happened? Why? Is it dangerous? Why or why not? My machine is a Dell Inspiron 1501, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, ATI integrated graphics, AMD 64 Anthlon X2 processor. I'm dual booting with Windows 7 as I learn Linux.

If I hookup an external monitor the video works just fine. Being new to linux and even newer to installing on it laptops, can anyone tell me what if any thing can be done to correct this. Ubuntu :: Not Starting - Logo Disappears - A Jet Black Screen Shows With 2 Horizontal White Dashes Appear At The Top

Mar 15, 2010

Once I select Ubuntu 9.10 from Grub, it shows the logo, the logo disappears, a jet black screen shows with 2 horizontal white dashes appear at the top.

I recently uninstalled Firefox 3.6 pre using synaptic to go with the stable Firefox 3.6 installed with the PPA repository that was given in the Ubuntu wiki. It installed and ran fine but when I rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't start.

I went into recovery mode a few times, tried to fix any broken packages and when it said it was fixed, I tried rebooting and the same error occurred. I also tried to use dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver-xorg and then ran startx but x didn't load properly. Some more debugging and a few driver errors came up involving intel so I installed a package which fixed that.

Ran the dpkg-reconfigure again and ran startx. This time x loaded but it was a jet black screen and I had to hold ctrl + alt and hit a few F keys to get back to the prompt.

I understand this could be a xulrunner error so I tried reinstalling xulrunner-1.9.1. I also rolled back my repositories to get the Firefox 3.5 branch and I installed the original Firefox 3.5, ran firefox --version to make sure and I finally have that back installed.

I tried rebooting and running the OS normally, but again it failed at the same point. What exactly should I do next? Yes, I could reinstall but it's such a small problem with maybe 1 or 2 broken packages, is there anyway I can save my current ubuntu system (as I have made countless configuration changes months ago and I do not want to do it again)?

Example:

Normally when you clean up icons they are organize in the following manner:

[X]
[X]
[X]
[X]

Left to Right, Top to Bottom organization would be like this:

[X] [X] [X] [X]

I prefer it this way and also KDE has it.

Ubuntu :: Thick Black Lines Sometimes Appear On Printing / Avoid Them?

Feb 22, 2010

Operating System: Ubuntu 9.04
Printer: LaserJet CM1312 MFP

I have an intermittent printing issue that results in part of a printed page containing a horizontal line that spans over two lines. The line is mostly black, with the occasional small break where there seem to be printed multiple characters printed over each other.

Sometimes I print and I do not get this issue. Other times I can print 60+ pages and it happens, while sometimes I get it on a single page being printed.

I'm not sure if this is a driver, printer or cable issue. We've used it through CUPS and we've used a print hub to convert the USB to a network accessible printer to see if that made any difference but it did not.

I have a feeling this has something to do with the print job data corruption.

Fedora Installation :: Black And White Lines On Boot LiveCD Or HDD?

Jan 9, 2009

Downloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.

hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.

Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?

My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.

Ubuntu :: Graphics / GUI 10.04 - Skin Flickered Black / Green A Few Times Then White Vertical Lines Started Appearing Down From The Top Of The Screen

Aug 3, 2010

Ever since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen (no Desktop) On 10.04 LTS

Jun 20, 2010

The computer was working fine last night, when I woke up this morning (I leave it on) it was making strange noises through the speakers and I had a blank screen, restarted a few times had some page full of code and wouldn't move on from there, I went out came back started it up and it did everything normally except instead of a desktop I had a black screen, however strangely enough when I press the power button on the PC a shut down menu comes up, and the mouse works and I can select from the options. I am on an Nvidia ION tho. How do I boot into a safe mode as such? as at the moment I'm using a ubuntu live CD to read the forums!

On the GRUB menu, seclect "Ubuntu (recovery mode)" (not exact wording). You'll get scrolling boot messages until you get to a screen with a grey box and some options. Use the arrow keys to select "x failsafe graphics mode" or something of the like. Press enter and you'll probably get a message that your card can't be detected or something. Press okay and continue. Your screen will be messed up, but you'll be in. It probably isn't the same problem, as you don't have an ATI card and can see a shutdown menu, but good Luck!

How do you bring up the GRUB menu? My PC isnt dual booted so I never see any menus at all, I thought all I had to do was press F8 during boot up? No, F8 is Windows. Hold down shift when booting to see the menu. Downloaded & Installed the 10.6 driver and everything is working fine. Unminimizing apps works much faster with this driver . However, /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial results in

Code:
Found fglrx primary device section
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-2
/usr/bin/aticonfig: Writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' failed. Bad file descriptor.

Right now I've tried what "jxtreme" suggested on quote nr2 however when I go into recovery mode I get a load of code scrolling through the screen as its supposed to but I never get any box with options as he says, it just gets to a point where there's a small white cursor flashing at me half way down the screen and it stays there...
