Ubuntu :: Thick Black Lines Sometimes Appear On Printing / Avoid Them?
Feb 22, 2010
Operating System: Ubuntu 9.04
Printer: LaserJet CM1312 MFP
I have an intermittent printing issue that results in part of a printed page containing a horizontal line that spans over two lines. The line is mostly black, with the occasional small break where there seem to be printed multiple characters printed over each other.
Sometimes I print and I do not get this issue. Other times I can print 60+ pages and it happens, while sometimes I get it on a single page being printed.
I'm not sure if this is a driver, printer or cable issue. We've used it through CUPS and we've used a print hub to convert the USB to a network accessible printer to see if that made any difference but it did not.
I have a feeling this has something to do with the print job data corruption.

find . -name '*.java' | xargs grep -l 'string'
How do I change this command to print to the shell all of the lines which contain a match?

I have an HP color laser printer and I am looking for a way to print black as black instead of using tri-color. For example If I print a document that has colored text then any black text is printed using the color cartridges rather then using black. I have been surviving by using windows XP in virtualbox but I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I've looked all over then net for a solution but I've found nothing. I remember having similar problems like this with older Macs because of postscript printing and I'm thinking this is the same problem but I don't know how to fix it. I've searched the forums as well but no joy.

My Epson CX6000 works fine except it only prints in black whether I'm using image viewer, gimp, etc. It's been like this for some time, but I didn't need to print anything in color until now. I'm using Hardy Heron 8.04 and I didn't have any trouble installing the printer.

Thought I'd post this as I couldn't find much about it online. I have an HP3745 and am running Ubuntu 10.04. For some reason I couldn't get anything from the black ink cartridge in test mode or for real. The printer would go through the motions but would return a blank page. Turns out it was because my COLOUR ink cartridge was empty!! Solution was simply to select print in grayscale. Also I find with this particular printer HPCUPS works better than HPLIP.

Eclipse has too thick title bars (see attachment), even when changing the default font size from 10 to 8 the font changes, but the borders remain the same.Tested with Eclipse 3.6 in Ubuntu 10.04, Kubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 13.In Windows XP the title bars are thinner (in Eclipse 3.5 and 3.6), and also remain the same when changing the default font size from 8 to 10.
So the default font size differs in those two OS'es.It looks like the title bars under Linux are designed for 10px fonts, whereas in Windows for 8px.What are your experiences with Eclipse?

i have an dedll inspiron 8600 laptop. i just installed the new ubuntu, 11.0.4 i think. i installed from a usb. in the installation i wiped the whole drive with no partitions. i booted it while connected to the Internet and it loaded updates as it went. as far i know, everything went just as it was supposed to. the new os seems to be behaving just as it should.
however, (always a catch, right?) now, the right third of my screen appears to have thin black Phoenician blinds from top to bottom.
i can still partially see the icons in the top right corner, but not well enough to use them really, but they are active. i tried rebooting, but it didn't help.
i promised my girlfriend that this would make our dog poo machine run great and we could get more work done faster. i really hope i didn't make a mistake. the dog house gets me claustrophobic.

I wanted to get rid of ubuntu splash screen, and edited the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text". Now it won't load at all. It nust shows the same purple background without ubuntu logo, then turns black and shows few lines of text. After displaying "Checking battery state... [OK]", it freezes and does not move further. I can't even.start a recovery mode because I have no dual boot and do not get this opfion at the start.

i just installed slackware 13.37 which worked fine but when i boot it up it runs a number of lines and then the screen just goes black... i can login as root blindly and start x (i THINK, judging from hdd led)... but screen stays black... its a laptop and closing/opening the lid doesnt work either...
i am dualbooting with slack 13.1 which runs fine... it switches screen res at some point during boot (font is smaller) and i would say that is the point where the screen goes black in 13.37...

Suddenly, my printer has stopped printing in black. Either I get a smudge on the paper, or the warning light comes on and it stops working completely.
hp-levels reports the black cartridge as 82% full and in good health hp-info says "there is a problem with a print cartridge" hp-clean either doesn't help or doesn't run
I've tried wiping the print head (the ink's coming out OK) and polishing the cartridge connection.

I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

I've been able to print with other distros (Mint, Sabayon) without problem so I'm guessing the way my printer is configured with Slack must be wrong. My CX6600 is recognized and when I try to print, it responds, but by printing a page filled with black ink. I have tried printing in Okular, Firefox and OpenOffice with the same result.

Downloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.
hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.
Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?
My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.

I have an HP Printer which prints black horizontal lines after each line or colors an entire blank line black, so a blank page will come out all black. Others who have access to the Printer are able to print well, without any problem.

I upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...
Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

Ever since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)

specs: toshiba lappy
110gb hdd, 1gb ram, core 2 duo 1.6ghz, nvidia 7600
windows xp pro service pack 3
jaunty jackalope
my problem is: i wanted to repartition (shrink xp and create partition for data storage) my hdd using gparted live cd 0.5.2-9. everything went fine until i clicked exit and reboot. after the cd tray automatically ejected i got a flood of "VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk srO". this doesnt stop until i press enter. after that it reboots normally and there is no problem with the os.
my questions: 1) is that flood anything bad, is there a way to avoid this. i read somewhere that the problem is solved when using the terminal sudo eject - then push back the cd tray - then sudo eject -t. i tried that but it said failed because gparted cd is in use.
2) the first time that happened i didnt know what to do, so it flooded like for 15min or more until i pressed enter. my question is if the flood is being saved anywhere on the pc so that i have to delete it?
and a question regarding extended partition: 3) i have 50gb left that i want to use for data storage. i read that you can only have one extended partition. so since there is already one extended partition from ubuntu, i cant have another one for windows? so i can only make the data partition as primary or is there another reason why the "create extended partition" is greyed out?
last question: 4) when i set up the partition for swap i made it 1032gb big but in gparted it shows 980.53mb. is that still enough or why is it like that because somehow the sizes of the partitions seem a bit different than how they originally should be. im actually used in seeing the size shrinking a bit but i found it weird that the ubuntu partition shows 4.76 when it should be 4.5gb. i know its not much different but im just curious to know why..
partitions order: windows - unallocated (-->data partition) - ubuntu (primary) - home folder (extended) - swap
in windows the partitions are shown as: windows xp (31,74gb) - unallocated (50,05gb) - 4,76gb unkown - 24,27gb unkown - 981mb uknown
in gparted: its almost the same, only difference: there is unallocated space (7 or 8mb) between home folder and swap

I'm new to linux, and I want to know if there are any keyboard shortcuts I could try to fix this. I'd rather not hard reboot whenever I run into a problem, I just don't know the terms to google for

I had a problem with Thunar in Xubuntu. As I often work with huge images, memory is consumed generating Previews. Disabling Previews seems to be very difficult in Thunar, as it makes use of external Thumbnailers. Another problem is making a file executable. I couldn't find out how to do that in Thunar. So I decided to change back to Nautilus, which solves the problems. In preferences it is easy to disable generating previews. But I was not able to get completely rid of Thunar. The folders on my desktop still would open in Thunar, although I set Nautilus as default browser. So the problem sometimes is still there. Uninstall is not possible, as it completely uninstalls xfce-desktop. Is there a way to avoid running both browsers at the same time?
