Apr 23, 2011I'm new to slackware (and the forums) and I just installed it onto my laptop. I have previously used linux mint, and I like it but I feel that slackware might give me more experience with the terminal, and more original linux ideas. I have kde up and running as far as a window manager, and everything seems to work except connecting to the internet. I have a linksys router. I usually use wifi, but I even tried connecting through an ethernet cord and that didn't work either. I have searched many different threads, but either they didn't address my specific problem, or I couldn't understand what was going on. I tried to configure using "netconfig", but I didn't understand what many of the prompts wanted. I entered a name and a domain name, and selected DHCP, but this did nothing.

Jan 7, 2011This past fall, I formatted my hard drive and put fedora 12 on. Worked fine until my old hard drive decided to die. During the last few days of dying Fedora stopped being able to connect to my Linksys Wireless G router(I'm hard wired), or detect any connections. I just assumed this was the hard drives fault.
Now, I have a new WD hard drive with Fedora 14 on it and still cannot connect to the internet. I fear worst case scenario would be my ethernet port is dead but I wouldnt know how to detect that. I thought that it might be a problem of drivers also but couldnt find anything on this subject.

Oct 17, 2010I've searched all night for similar threads and either don't understand the instructions or find that my computer simply isn't the same! I've tried to gather as much information as I felt needed when people asked in other threads. Just use small words around me, I'm really *that* technologically inadequet. Why I bought a linux ubuntu computer is still a mystery!
I'm having trouble connecting to my home's wireless internet, which is linksys. I can connect via wire just fine, but I want to access my built-in wireless card. How do I set up the wireless for this machine? Here's the info of what version of Ubuntu and about the card.

3. wvdial
Its connecting when i Dial using wvdial as below

After connecting i am getting ip as 180.215.44.134 gateway as 10.212.64.1 but if i try to browse the Internet using firefox it says no server found error.I tried to ping [URL] and its not pinging after connecting. nslookup also fails against [URL]however if i ping any of the ip that i am getting while connecting it is pinging Also disabled the firewall and selinux is set to disable just in case to check something else is blocking but no luck

Before I installed the os, I tryed it out, as they let you do before a complete installation. While testing, I was asked if I wanted to install the proprietary drivers for the broadcom nic. When I did this, I was able to connect to the internet, however, after the install, I can not seem to update the drivers.
Maybe this was automatically done during installation and now there is another problem, but when I try to connect to my network, after I click connect, it disconnects right away and I am entering all the information correctly.

Oct 11, 2010I just installed Fedora Core on my Dell Inpsiron B130 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to the internet both wirelessly and with an ethernet cord into the router. When trying to configure my network, I dont recognize any of the ethernet adapters in the drop down list. I have been told that my wireless card is Linux compatible (dell y8029 dell wireless 1370 802.11/a/b/g mini pci). My ethernet card is a B130 Broadcom Ethernet Driver which isnt in the drop down menu either.
I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"

While I can access the internet using the Vista partition, on the Ubuntu partition, I cannot access anything. Further investigating the problem, I have noticed that there is something wrong with the DNS on the Ubuntu partition. Pinging the IP address of a website (such as linuxquestions.org) loads up, yet, when I type in the Domain Name, there is an endless wait. I have already deleted and re-entered the contents of the resolv.conf file as well as try to change the settings but to no avail.

i tried to enable it again by using 'sudo ifup wlan0' but i get a few errors i think the 2nd errors may be because i tried to download another driver for the wireless using 'wget [URL] and then 'dpkg -i rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb'

Apr 27, 2011I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it. This may apply for other Universities with similar setups. It was impossible for me to figure it out on my own, I had to go back to my old 9.04 partition to get the info...
1) Open Terminal Server Client (Applications>Internet>...)
2) Insert as follows:

3) OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED click Save As and save it as a quick connect so you don't have to refer to this again.

Ubuntu :: Not Connecting To Internet?
Jul 3, 2010I created a Live CD with Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop, in which everything seems to work except Firefox, or internet connections in general. I've tried several other Linux distros with the same results. The DSL modem is on and working (USB Westell Wirespeed duel connect modem), works with Windows XP (native OS on this computer) but not with this live cd.
Ive been inside the network manager, and have only one connection setup which is DSL and automatically connect. But when it looks for a connection, none is found (the tab on the upper right corner of the desktop with the exclamation mark).
The live cd connects at work, but it's through a server and connected to that via ethernet, so that's a completely different setup.
I've seen countless other instances of connectivity issues, and it all seems to involve hours of testing, command line editing, and other things that more often than not produce no results.

Nov 3, 2009I have been through a lot of posts and was still unable to connect to the internet using wvdial utility after doing all the changes. I being a newbie to this operating system, didn't know how to get started. After going through a lot of posts, I came across an application that is going to be a part of Fedora 12 called ' blueman '. It is used to connect to the internet using a gprs enabled phone via bluetooth. It integrates itself with Network Manager making it even more easier to use. To install it type the following commands in the terminal:
su
Type in your password and hit enter. Then type
yum install blueman
The application is only 575kb and will install instantly.And after a reboot fedora will show an applet related to that application. Open it and click search to list all available devices and select your phone and then select bond to pair your phone with your computer ( if it isn't already). After bonding right click your phone and select serial ports>dial up service. this will make the gprs/edge/3G connection to appear in network manager and selecting it will connect your computer to the internet.
This was the bluetooth way. If you want to connect through USB, just plug in your phone and select PC Suite mode in your phone. The fedora installation will automatically detect your phone as a modem and the connection will appear in the network manager.
This works on all N series Nokia phones and also most other phones as well.

Details: ADSL modem with pppoe connection (working fine on win xp)
