View 9 Replies View RelatedI esablished a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on separate partitions. Then, as I realised that Windows 7 was rubbish and Ubuntu annoyed me by losing wireless connectivity after an update, I decided to go back to Windows XP for a while. So I did what I probably shouldn't have done, and formatted the partition (or so I thought) with Ubuntu on, using Windows.
Now, on booting up the system, all I can get is the Grub Rescue prompt and nothing in the Bios menus seems to be of any assistance.
I've tried booting XP from a CD, but a blue screen error always occurs at the same point in the installation. I wonder if I should make a CD/external drive with Ubuntu on, reinstall it, and go from there?

View 7 Replies View RelatedDuring upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, I was asked several times what I wanted to do with menu.lst. I gave the same reply each time: "keep the local version currently installed". I wanted it the way I had when using 8.04; that is, not having the un-customizable grub menu I've experienced before with 10.04.
When I was done installing 10.04 and was going to reboot, the GRUB menu appears as it has before, and the Ubuntu entry says "Ubuntu 8.04", even though it's now 10.04. But when I choose "Ubuntu 8.04", the following error message occurs:

I am running Linux Mint 8 on my Dell Precision 350 computer. Every so often (sometimes every few hours, sometimes every few days, it appears to be random) my desktop will crash and display the message:

This is displayed several times on all of the terminals, but with different numbers each time. When this happens, typing any commands in the terminal result in the error message being displayed again. When I restart after this happens, linux generally displays "Give root password for maintenance (or type control-D to continue):" and I give the root password. Running "fsck /dev/sda1" seems to fix this problem for the next boot, but then it will come back in either a few hours or a few days. Reinstalling the distro does not work, as I have already tried this. I suspect a hard disk error, but before I run out and buy and install a new hard disk, I wanted to know if maybe there is some way to fix this through software.
We are running into issues with a File Upload script written in PHP. We can upload files without issues except with .*x files (such as .docx) We are getting permission denied errors. The error occurs when we use move upload file, to the new directory within our PHP app. If we give the uploads folder 777 access, it works fine without error. I dont like that. So I set it to 775 (Also dont like this), but it didnt work until I gave group ownership to www-data (I really dont like this)
This issue only happens on our production server, which is Ubuntu 9.04, running Apache2.2 and PHP5 will all the newest updates. We also have all MIME's configured, and are able to download the file from Apache without error. The first thing we noticed before the file permissions error, was that the MIME type changed to .zip when we used mime content type function. But yet using the FILES array, it still showed .docx.
A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

I have a bluetooth headset for a cellphone, which I would like to use with my Ubuntu computers. I'm currently trying to do this with a computer running Jaunty. I have successfully paired the headset with the computer. But when I try to send an audio file to the headset, I get the "Sending files via Bluetooth dialogue box, immediately followed by the error message:

It just seems to me that using a Bluetooth cellphone headset is not supported, or that I am doing something wrong.
UPDATE: I just tried doing this with my other machine running 10.04, with similar results. It looks momentarily like it's going to transfer the file, then reports that "an unknown error occurred". Is it just not possible to use bluetooth headsets for cellphones with Ubuntu computers? That doesn't seem very likely: when the computer detects the headset, it reports it as being a "headset". So why won't it work? What am I doing wrong?

I edited the sudoers file (via visudo) and added the following:
User_Alias RPTS2 = vtmtest
RPTS2 xxxxx = (jboss) /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
The user (vtmtest) issues the following command
sudo /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
and gets this message:
user vtmtest is not allowed to execute '/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh' as root on xxxxx
When I look at the log, I see the following:

1. Why does sudo try to run as the root user, when I have specified in the command to run as jboss?
2. Do I need to specify anything else so that this command can run as the "jboss" user and not "root"?
I can make aliases fine by editing the .bashrc file in my home directory, but the first thing I do when I open a terminal window is sudo su so I don't have to type sudo in front of every command. The problem is, I am then not able to use my aliases. How can I make aliases that work after I run the sudo su command?

Basically I'm not properly prompted for the password and as soon as I type anything in my background job fails because it didn't receive the password. Is there any way to execute a sudo command by supplying the password on the same line as the command?

I have a server that started out at 8.04 LTS was upgraded to 8.10 and to 9.04. When I upgraded to 9.04 sudo and ssh stopped working.
Fortunately I have a root account and can login as root or su to root.
I suspect this is the result of changes I made to nsswitch.conf and pam.conf to get winbind working.
I was hoping for a fix by upgrading to 9.10, but that didn't work. I want to upgrade to 10.04 LTS, and stay there but I think need to resolve this first.
auth.log reports failed password for ssh attempts and authentication failed for sudo. I am at a loss to determine where the problem is and how to track it down.
I started with

It hung so I hit Ctrl-Z then ps -a and found the process and

I went and deleted the lock file in /var/lib/dpkg/ on the install and ran

I tried to uninstall it via the package manager and it hangs there too. I'm in 10.10...and I think this is the only time I've had an install hang...
The only thing I remember being updated is xserver, but I know there were other packages updated.
After the splash screen, a text login is shown. If I do nothing, it goes right to a black screen, but first there are weird red pixels randomly strewn about the screen. If I quickly login via the text screen, it then goes to the same black screen. Either way, there are the weird red pixels and a few flashes of the screen before going black.
This happens 100% of the time.
I have tried:
booting with recovery mode and selecting repair packages (no packages are broken, missing, etc.)
booting with recovery mode and selecting startx with failsafe (same black screen)
booting with older kernels (same thing)
forgive me for raising a common problem again, but I cannot find a fix in the other threads.
I am trying to catch up on upgrades. Step 1 is to get up to 9.10 from 9.04
Doing so however I am being told I don't have enough disk space
I present have my 35-odd GB HDD partitioned:
6GB for Ubuntu
28 for Data
and 1. or so for swap
evidently I underestimated my Ubuntu partition.
what can I do now?
I have run Computer Janitor (is that the application that results from Sudo apt-get clean? I did that but couldn't figure out how to "clean"?)
I have Gparted installed but I don't see how to use the Move/Resize option.
The sudo upgrade of 2010-09-15 modified permissions on /var in my systems, both on 32 and 64 bit. (from 755 to 700) My subversion server stops working after the upgrade, you have to restore the old permissions by hand. I don't inspect how, but I've checked it few times...
View 5 Replies View RelatedSometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.
