Ubuntu :: Access The CD Drive From The Terminal?
Dec 9, 2010
I'm trying to run a CD, which worked fine on Windows, on Ubuntu. I have wine installed, and even tried to execute the file that the instructions said to execute(Setup.exe) if the auto run feature doesn't work, but Ubuntu wouldn't let me. So I tried to make it executable, but I couldn't because it is on a read only CD. I don't know how to access the CD drive from the terminal, so that might work.

Greetings Ubuntu World. I'm trying to find out how do you access external drives inside the terminal of Ubuntu 10.4 or Fedora 12? I'm not sure which command to use.

i started using computer when it was all dos driven so thought i was going to be fine using the terminal in ubuntu the problem i am facing is i can not quite get my head round why is it if i load the terminal. and the first this i type is dir or ls it gives me a list off directories. So why is it if i type cd /pictures i get no such file or directory ? Confused
This also bugging the jebus out off me is i am trying to get into my usb pen drive from the terminal to run a program i have on there.
so i type cd /media
then typed ls
is displayed New Volume <-- This being the name off my pen drive
i have tried every this to get into there but the commands i would use in dos are not playing ball.
Can some one please explain how to get into my usb pen then tell me were i can go read on this as i really can not get my head around this at moment.

I have two external hard drives. One is a 2.5" 80GB USB HDD and the other is a Seagate 3.5" USB 500GB HDD. Both hard drives are mounted properly and I can access the data on both hard drives. I can access the small 80GB HDD via ssh from another computer and delete files, but when I try to access the 500GB drive via ssh it says access denied. When I try to access it with root, I can access it but I cannot see any files listed.

I am running a hp dv701175nr laptop and am booting ubuntu 11.04 from a usb flash drive. I can not seem to find my internal drive that has windows 7 stored on it. I tried to mount it but it give me this error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on /
mount failed
I can't use this operating system if I can't access my windows 7 drive and I really want to use this OS .
EDIT: Okay, so I think I have found my problem, but I don't know how to fix it, there are differences in my mtab and fstab commands, I will post what they say in a second, but I do not know how or what I need to do to change and make the settings right

I have a serious problem! I can not access ubuntu!
I wanted to customize the login window, and went on "System -> Administration -> Login Window" and I click "unlock" and I changed something (I do not remember), then I restarted the computer and all was well, but it appeared a black screen with two lines written, but it is too fast, I can not read what is written, and then pop the login screen, and when I put my login and password and click on enter I released a screen "terminal" at the top right.

I am trying to access a folder through the terminal but I am not sure how.
For example, I can access the documents by typing cd Documents. BUT I do not know how I can access a folder that for example has a long name like: scangearm-mp-250series-1.60-1deb.tar.gz

I've recently created a new user's account in Ubuntu because of some difficulties I was having with network communications. Apparently this has affected my ability to get into a terminal because now, when I submit my user name I get the following:
[OPTIONS] [PASSWORD-FILES]
--single "single crack" mode
--wordlist=FILE --stdin wordlist mode, read words from FILE or stdin
--rules enable word mangling rules for wordlist mode
--incremental[=MODE] "incremental" mode [using section MODE]
--external=MODE external mode or word filter
--stdout[=LENGTH] just output candidate passwords [cut at LENGTH]
--restore[=NAME] restore an interrupted session [called NAME]
--session=NAME give a new session the NAME
--status[=NAME] print status of a session [called NAME]
--make-charset=FILE make a charset, FILE will be overwritten
--show show cracked passwords
--test perform a benchmark
--users=[-]LOGIN|UID[,..] [do not] load this (these) user(s) only
--groups=[-]GID[,..] load users [not] of this (these) group(s) only
--shells=[-]SHELL[,..] load users with[out] this (these) shell(s) only
--salts=[-]COUNT load salts with[out] at least COUNT passwords only
--format=NAME force hash type NAME: DES/BSDI/MD5/BF/AFS/LM/NT/mscash/NETLM/NETNTLM/bfegg/DOMINOSEC/lotus5/raw-MD5/raw-sha1/IPB2/nsldap/openssha/HDAA
--save-memory=LEVEL enable memory saving, at LEVEL 1..3
I've always been able to just install my name and password and things worked smoothly. What is this about and what do I need to do to restore my ability to use a terminal?

I just attempted to upgraded to KDE 4.4 via backports but it seems a number of updates were blocked and now Plasma workspace crashes upon login. I can only get around viashift+alt+F2. And though I can access KPackageKit via shift+alt+F2 I can't seem to get software sources to load up from KPackage. I want to try enabling the pre-proposed and untested or whatever the other option was in software sources... Unless someone has a better idea

Good day! Just finished setting up my 11.04 home server this week. Installed GNOME initially and ended up not feeling it (a bit too slow for VNC on my Atom box). Performed sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop and then installed xfce.
Now, I can't use tab-complete in any Terminal app in xfce when using VNC to access the box. It still works properly over SSH. Have ensured that all lines referring to auto-complete are un-commented in the following:
/etc/profile
/etc/bash.bashrc
~/.bashrc
I have verified that bash_completion is installed (reinstalled using Synaptic just to be sure). It seemed to work intermittently when I changed the above config files but has reverted back to not functioning anymore.

I have a Windows PC that I'm trying to access from my Karmic Laptop terminal. I've got them connected over the network and have the drive in the Windows machine mounted, but I just can't find it in the filesystem. I'd like to write some scripts to move some files around, but am obviously off to a bad start.

Ubuntu and am using the 64bit version of Ubuntu 10.04.Now I can access the folders in my home folder through the places GUI, but I can't access them in the terminal. When I begin typing in the terminal and press tab it does not autocomplete, and typing the directory manually says that there is no such file or directory, even though when I type dir or ls they are clearly there.

My Internet connection works.Using no VPN connection, I can access the Tnternet from the gnome-terminal (ping, apt-get, lynx), as well as from any GUI application. As soon as I establish a VPN connection via openconnect, GUI applications such as firefox, transmission and thunderbird still work. But terminal applications (such as mutt, apt-get etc), some daemons (like mpdscribble) and some GUI applications (such as the easytag cddb search) don't work anymore.

I want to change the Alt+F key in terminal to not access thefile menu (can't think of what it is called but File, Edit, View, etc...at the top). Alt is bound to access the first letter of the names in the file menus. This eliminates the Alt+F shortcut to move forward a word. I don't even mind so much if I permanently remove the alt binding to access the file menus.

I tried smbclient but after successfully logging in I couldn't issue the sh command. Isn't it possible to have it mounted in the /mnt folder like a normal filesystem?

I am currently running Ubuntu Server 9.10 as an FTP server. It has become a necessity to allow users access via SSH terminal or sftp via WinSCP. I need to be able to monitor what users are doing at any given time and be able to pull up each users activity history. Essentially I need to be able to pinpoint who modified a file at what time. Also what is the best method to monitor things like nmap probes?

What folder[?] do I search to read for a USB drive (or any hard drive such as a partition) through the terminal? If you are asking why, I need to change the permission of this one folder. It was private, setting was 700 in UNIX I would like chmod to 755.You see, I'm browsing my laptop's hard drive that's mounted on a docking bay SATA to USB and I can't seem to browse one of my user's and I recall the permission setting was 700.nope, using the "Property -> Permission" method did not work.

I have a eeepc netbook with 4 gig internal flash storage, no hard drive.I broke the GUI. The ONLY way I can access it now is through a terminal. It has barely enough space to get the ubuntu .iso image over to it.I have tried upwards of 10 times with 2 or 3 different distros to make a bootable usb drive with my macintosh. The process appears to complete without errors but the usb sticks are 100% unbootable every time (i.e. the netbook refuses to boot from them, as does my mac).
I get the SAME result using the SAME usb stick that I originally used to install ubuntu on the netbook, so I know it did work once. Regardless, I would like to try as a last hope to start from scratch making the bootable usb stick from my actual netbook.I do NOT have access to a GUI (see above).direct me to instructions to make a bootable usb drive from ubuntu 8.something?

If I click right-click on a drive in nautlius and do 'safely remove drive', the external hard-drive stops spinning.
What is the terminal equivalent? If I do 'pumount' it is unmounted, but the hard-drive continues spinning.
