Ubuntu Networking :: Access Files On Windows PC From Terminal?
Apr 9, 2010
I have a Windows PC that I'm trying to access from my Karmic Laptop terminal. I've got them connected over the network and have the drive in the Windows machine mounted, but I just can't find it in the filesystem. I'd like to write some scripts to move some files around, but am obviously off to a bad start.

My company runs a Windows server. I can connect remotely via a very slow desktop emulator program in VirtualBox or I can just VPN and access whatever files I need. #2 is the preferred option.
So far I have officially setup the VPN and everything. It logs in. It gives me the little lock symbol above the Network Manger icon. I'm connected!
But...
How do I actually access the darn files available via the VPN? We keep most files on a single server for the company. Internally, it looks something like "//Bob/Folder/". At the office I have the shortcut set to the "folder" portion of the above since that's where things are located.
I'm not seeing anything related to the VPN in Nautilus, under Network... squat. I've tried several methods of using the "Places > Connect to Server" function while setting it to "Windows Share" as well. Honestly, I'm unsure if this is appropriate nor what to put in the fields (Server, Share, Folder, User Name, Domain Name) if this is the right place to be.

When I first start up my 2 computers once the network is established if I try to acces the Ubuntu shared folders from the Win XP machine I get this error:"\localhost not accessible. You might not have permission to usethis network resource.t the administrator of this server to findout if you have access permissions. You were not connected because aduplicate name exits on the network. Go to System in Control Panel tochange the computer name and try again."If I first access the Windows shared files and then go back to the Win machine I get the password prompt and all is well

I have both Windows And Ubuntu 11.04 installed. Right now I'm using Ubuntu, but when I wanted to listen to my music I can't seem to find it. It is located on the C-drive in Windows, but I can't find any ways to access that drive. I've also just started using Ubuntu (like 2 hours or so) so I do not know much about it.

I've not been able to find any tutorials online to tell me how this is done. There seems to be many tools for Win to Ext2/Ext3 but nothing really providing the solution I need.

1) Can I use the LiveCD to access my files stored in Windows? (The attached screenshot shows my Computer.)
2) If so, can I backup the files to DVD using CDDVD Creator, which comes with Ubuntu? If not, what must I do to accomplish these 2 things if I install Ubuntu?

My Internet connection works.Using no VPN connection, I can access the Tnternet from the gnome-terminal (ping, apt-get, lynx), as well as from any GUI application. As soon as I establish a VPN connection via openconnect, GUI applications such as firefox, transmission and thunderbird still work. But terminal applications (such as mutt, apt-get etc), some daemons (like mpdscribble) and some GUI applications (such as the easytag cddb search) don't work anymore.

I can't access my files on windows from ubuntu anymore. I was able to do that some time ago, I'm not sure what changed. I can see the shared folders, but when I try to open them, and authentication window appears, asking for the login, password and work group. It doesn't get passed that even though I enter the correct information.

I am trying to properly mount a samba share in order to access it from a terminal and run a script that I've written over a folder in the share. How could I do that? I tried smbclient but after successfully logging in I couldn't issue the sh command. Isn't it possible to have it mounted in the /mnt folder like a normal filesystem?

I have my ubuntu comp setup as a media server and works fine with mythtv etc but I also want to access the files from my computers in the other rooms (most have windows 7). I was able to share the file containing the videos easy enough by right clicking the file and checking all of the sharing options the first time. I have been able to access all the files that i originally put in the folder and stream video to my other computers without issue.
However any new files I add to the folders I am now unable to access. The files show up but when I click on them it says I don't have permission. I have tried unsharing the folder and redoing it but I come to the same issue. I am sure I am just forgetting an easy step but I can't think of what that is. Also want to make sure that any new files I add to this folder will work instantly across the network.

I have an Intel PRO 2200BG wireless card and can connect to my router when logging in via gdm (using Xubuntu.) No problems there, connection never drops, very reliable!
But I've since had the need to shutdown X and keep a simple terminal instance open but as soon as I stop gdm the connection to the router drops. Trying to connect via the terminal using wpa_supplicant has so far been unsuccessful.
I know for a fact I'm doing something wrong, just don't know what and would appreciate some help!
