This is a weird one. I have Xubuntu on my computer and it shuts down when I play online games. I doesn't do so right away, but it happens randomly after some time (like 5-20min.). And any game will do the trick at some point. why and what to do about it?
View 4 RepliesI just had my laptop in the shop for a month or so now (through Staples warrenty) I sent it in because my LCD monitor wasn't lighting up after a bit of use.
Got it back and they said my issue could not be replicated, so they just cleaned it and such and gave it back. Well so far it's been going pretty good, monitor stays on except when i turn on Heroes of Newerth.
What kind of problem is this and is it easily fixable?
my games randomly close on xubuntu 9.10 anyone know why and how to fix it.I have 128mb ram graphics so thats enough for my games i run.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am having sound issues while playing some games under WINE. for this I will use World of Warcraft as it has options for different sound engines. The problem is that I will have sound running fine for a while after a fresh reboot. It will seem fine for a good half hour to an hour and then suddenly it will stop. It will still be present in the applications list in sound preferences listed as 'ALSA plug-in [wine-preloader]'. muting/unmuting and adjusting the slider has no effects. Enabling and disabling sound in the game also has no effects. Here is what I have tried thus far to try to remedy it:
tried all of the various sound options in winecfg (some simply don't produce any sound at all on a fresh reboot - OSS, for instance) tried with and without padsp tried the various sound engines in Config.wtf tried WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and the developer's PPA tried lowering the sample rate and the bits per sample in the audio tab of winecfg tried fiddling with the sound preferences applications controls I am not adventurous enough to try to install OSSv4 so that doesn't seem like an option for me. it is important to note that sounds not coming from WINE function as normal even while WINE is producing no sounds.
I get 2 black bars on the sides when playing games.
I have tried all resoulotions but nothing works.
It was same in windows, but I could just change a small setting by right clicking on my desktop. but how do I do it in Ubuntu?
I mean... My screen look good, and have right res when I'm not playing a game. But when a game starts it gives me 2 black bars. D:
I use 12800*800. It was standard and it is the only one that works.
Whenever I'm playing games using my gamepad, the OS Falls asleep after a while. As if I were doing nothing.

I have been having this system for about a month and the problem appeared just one week ago.I am a big fan of "Spring: TA" and that's the easiest way to reproduce the problem, by playing that game(and the most annoying). The funny thing is that when I just start the game the gpu temperature raises very fast. If after some time the pc doesn't reboot on itself the temperature just gets lower and lower. 1. I installed Flash player through a program called easyLiving, but when i play flash games online like on armorgames, everything will play fine, but sound will play about 2 seconds late with actions.
2. I can't play .wmv files from my MP3 player, I found some codes online and installed them, but now it just looks like I have 3 different audio players in mozilla and I'm not sure which kind to enable, and I still can't play .wmv movies. (I actually believe that problem 1 is unrelated, because I noticed it before I started downloading different audio players.)

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

post regarding a "Ubuntu-Desktop-Minimal"-type system.
i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed VMware server 2.x on my windows XP SP2 and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the VMWare. I have noticed several times that the ubuntu machines shuts it down (not sure the time pattern but it could be that it shuts down after a certain minutes idle). As a result of that, I always have to restart it.
I checked the event log viewer, it looks like there's always a segfault just before it shuts down. I've pasted the last few lines of event log below.

I've been using Ubuntu on my desktop for a while and it worked like a charm. Three months ago, I decided to put a new cpu fan because the old one was gathering dust and I wanted to have lower cpu temps. I decided to buy an Scythe Kabuto, nd installed it with no problems. Windows XP works perfect, but the problems come when I try to start Ubuntu, both from a Live CD or from the HD. Ubuntu starts normally, but in a short period of time (2~15 minutes) the PC randomly shuts down. I've seen some errors when I restart and try to start Ubuntu again mentioning high CPU tempetatures. The fact is that the CPU temperature never reaches more than 65, so my guess is that there is some problems with the ACPI and temp reading.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu 10 yesterday and I have a real frustrating problem. It shuts down for no reason at all, at first I thought it was because I was not using it (power management or maybe because of the screensaver) so configured it to never put it to sleep or shut down, and disabled the screensaver but it keeps happening. This is actually the second time I'm writing this post, because it suddenly shut down again while I was writing this before submitting it. I used to never have this problem before when I was using windows, so the problem must be something with Ubuntu.
Could it be something with my gfx driver? I tried configuring Fluxbox to use my second screen as an extended desktop but couldn't get it to work except with Gnome. If I do "fglrxinfo" I get a segmentation fault, so I messed that up but I'm okay with that because everything is working like I want it with Gnome. One weird thing I've noticed is that ubuntu once said (when booting) that it couldn't find /dev/null...? Should I just try a reinstall? I'm on a quad core with 2GB ram and an ATI HD 4870 2gb graphics card.
Ubuntu keeps shutting down my comp randomly for no reason at all. It doesn't even display any message, it just goes down without warning.
I'm sure it's not a heat issue. My computer never gets very hot and even when it does it still is very reliable.

I've been using Ubuntu for about one year. Recently upgraded to 10.04. The PC tries to boot, comes to the "Booting from device hd..." screen and then shuts down. It shuts down or halts but doesn't power off. The CPU is still powered. This happens for about 2 in 4 boots. The recovery mode runs just fine. It says no damaged partitions. Only the 'booting from device' is the problem point.

First, I got the CD, inserted it, and it seemed to boot fine to this orange screen, with a texture, and at the bottom what seemed to be a video roll and a man with his arms open. Right after that my system's monitor seemed to shut down, completely, and I was unable to turn it back on. I restarted my computer and went through the same process until I took out the CD. After using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back
