Ubuntu :: Laptop Automatically Shuts Down Because Of The CPU's Temperature
Jan 18, 2010For some reason,Ubuntu tends to use my CPU quite a lot.This cause my laptop to get really hot.Sometimes it even gets to the point when it automatically shuts down because of the CPU's temperature.Is there some sort of program or application to fix this?

Mar 29, 2010There is a question, i'd like to ask: is there any decent program to monitor HDD temperature for linux? WHy are they so few? Suse Install repositories do not show any that could be installed. I used to use hddtemp on my previous 11.2 gnome installation, but it seems now something gone wrong, and i cant get this program anymore through: "sudo apt-get install hddtemp" and receive "sudo: apt-get: command not found", so as i am a newbie i can barely guess what is wrong. maybe there are any other programs to get this thing running. Its really puzzling because every laptop user need such tool badly, and i do not understand why is there so many monitor tools for cpu temperature and not a single good for hard drive which is far more important than cpu temperature, that rises and drops constantly as soon as your fans are fine???

Jan 19, 2011I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.
I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Jul 15, 2009I feel little silly asking this, I accidently removed from my gnome panel my internet connection, volume control and battery indicator on F11. how can I add this back. It does not show up in the add to panel menu and the applications do not give you back the default feel.

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.
There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.
I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver
Feb 8, 2011Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
Ubuntu :: Always Shuts It Down By Itself?
Jan 20, 2010I've installed VMware server 2.x on my windows XP SP2 and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the VMWare. I have noticed several times that the ubuntu machines shuts it down (not sure the time pattern but it could be that it shuts down after a certain minutes idle). As a result of that, I always have to restart it.
I checked the event log viewer, it looks like there's always a segfault just before it shuts down. I've pasted the last few lines of event log below.

Ubuntu :: Can't Monitor Cpu Temperature?
Jan 2, 2010I've recently installed Karmic on my new machine with the following specs;
Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz
Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB
I'm looking to install some sort of temperature monitoring for my cpu and have had luck using either lm-sensors or acpi. With lm sensors, I've followed the various how to's on the forum and am still coming back with nothing. Trying to add hardware monitoring to panel brings up a 'no sensors found!' error, and x-sensors just starts up with a blank screen.
'sensors' in terminal spits back this -

Ubuntu :: PC Randomly Shuts Down ?
May 24, 2010I've been using Ubuntu on my desktop for a while and it worked like a charm. Three months ago, I decided to put a new cpu fan because the old one was gathering dust and I wanted to have lower cpu temps. I decided to buy an Scythe Kabuto, nd installed it with no problems. Windows XP works perfect, but the problems come when I try to start Ubuntu, both from a Live CD or from the HD. Ubuntu starts normally, but in a short period of time (2~15 minutes) the PC randomly shuts down. I've seen some errors when I restart and try to start Ubuntu again mentioning high CPU tempetatures. The fact is that the CPU temperature never reaches more than 65, so my guess is that there is some problems with the ACPI and temp reading.

I've followed [URL]...gpu-en-ubuntu/ but unfortunately in the description it was for the old version of Ubuntu and despite having downloaded the program, I simply can't add it in the taskbar. I did in a terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet. Then I installed a few remaining packets from synaptic. Now how do I run the program?

Dec 20, 2010Since a while,the energy-saver shuts down the screeago,it happens after half an hour,but I didn�t set it up in that orders !It makes menervous,short time away from the comp,and soon the screen is dark!And the screensaver will not appear any more,too.I tried to enlarge the times in the energy-manager,created a new profile,switched off the laptopmode-service,nothing helps!And it seems,if there is no possibility to set one of the profiles up,they can only be changed,deleted or newly created.Is there really no place to force it to the required settings?Under the good old KDE3.5,it was no problem,to get it work like I want it to.My 64-bit system runs under openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.Is here any salvation for my nerves

Jun 2, 2010I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.
My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?
The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.
So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

Jan 28, 2010I just had my laptop in the shop for a month or so now (through Staples warrenty) I sent it in because my LCD monitor wasn't lighting up after a bit of use.
Got it back and they said my issue could not be replicated, so they just cleaned it and such and gave it back. Well so far it's been going pretty good, monitor stays on except when i turn on Heroes of Newerth.
What kind of problem is this and is it easily fixable?

Apr 13, 2010I have a notebook with AMD Athlon 64 QL-62 2 cores CPU. Normally the temperature is 50-52 Celsius in idle but with Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 idle temp is 60 Celsius. /proc/cpuinfo shows both cores on 1GHz which is good but still temp is higher than usual. I tried to find solution using Google but I didn't find anything.

May 28, 2010I installed ubuntu 10 yesterday and I have a real frustrating problem. It shuts down for no reason at all, at first I thought it was because I was not using it (power management or maybe because of the screensaver) so configured it to never put it to sleep or shut down, and disabled the screensaver but it keeps happening. This is actually the second time I'm writing this post, because it suddenly shut down again while I was writing this before submitting it. I used to never have this problem before when I was using windows, so the problem must be something with Ubuntu.
Could it be something with my gfx driver? I tried configuring Fluxbox to use my second screen as an extended desktop but couldn't get it to work except with Gnome. If I do "fglrxinfo" I get a segmentation fault, so I messed that up but I'm okay with that because everything is working like I want it with Gnome. One weird thing I've noticed is that ubuntu once said (when booting) that it couldn't find /dev/null...? Should I just try a reinstall? I'm on a quad core with 2GB ram and an ATI HD 4870 2gb graphics card.
Ubuntu :: Shuts Down Comp Randomly?
May 30, 2010Ubuntu keeps shutting down my comp randomly for no reason at all. It doesn't even display any message, it just goes down without warning.
I'm sure it's not a heat issue. My computer never gets very hot and even when it does it still is very reliable.
Can someone please help me fix this? I'm very new to Ubuntu so i'm sorry if this question has already been answered somewhere else.

Jun 5, 2010I've been using Ubuntu for about one year. Recently upgraded to 10.04. The PC tries to boot, comes to the "Booting from device hd..." screen and then shuts down. It shuts down or halts but doesn't power off. The CPU is still powered. This happens for about 2 in 4 boots. The recovery mode runs just fine. It says no damaged partitions. Only the 'booting from device' is the problem point.

First, I got the CD, inserted it, and it seemed to boot fine to this orange screen, with a texture, and at the bottom what seemed to be a video roll and a man with his arms open. With a counter, and when it went to 0 my screen shut down and my computer went into a weird half-off state.

Oct 3, 2010After using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

Ubuntu :: Computer Shuts Down When Idle?
Feb 2, 2011Sometimes, when I leave my Ubuntu's X Server on, I'll come back after several minutes and see that my machine is powered off. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't, but I don't think it's because of hardware failure rather than my lack of measurement.
It used to power off in terminal mode (CTRL+ALT+F1) but then I added this to ~/.bashrc and it went away:

Ubuntu :: Skype Keeps Closing - Just Shuts Down
May 29, 2011For the past 3 days skype has been giving me problems for some reason. I start it, the sign in screen shows up and like 5 seconds later it closes, I check if the process is still running but it's not so it just shuts down. I've tried uninstalling it from synaptic package manager, then installing it again and it's still doing me this.

Mar 12, 2010Trying to install Ubuntu from CD. I choose my language and hit Install and come to a black screen with the Ubuntu symbol glowing (loading everything I assume) and after a minute my screen fills up with messages saying my CPU Temperature is 99 (gets progressively higher) degrees. Is there something else I need to do before installing?
I have windows installed on my C drive and I'm planning on installing Linux on another blank drive. The Ubuntu version is the newest one (9.10) I think. I've got a Core i7, EVGA mobo, Nvidia 9600GT video card, and 6 gigs of memory. HDDs are all WD I believe, and the one I'm putting Linux on is 320 Gig.
