I finally got Xubuntu 10.10 working on an USB thumb drive. Everything is working fine. One thing is bugging me though...The filesystem / (root) drive is shown twice on the desktop.One icon is the normal hdd icon for the root system (which you have on every Xubuntu system by default) but the second one is labeled as "removable drive ?3G?" and has the removable usb drive icon.Both of them point to the root drive.

The same issue i had with fluxbox mint 8 (based on ubuntu 9.10) I thought that my usb drives are dead, but after formatting it in windows xp, i could run from them any linux distro. I installed then mint xfce 6 (ithink based on 8.10) and crunchbang based on 9.04, and had no such issues. But now i am back on Xubuntu 9.10 and want to make all live usb within it. At the end of formating process i have message something like: cannot mount usb drive: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked. Of course, no drive is locked. After that i can start making installation usb disk, but after some percentage it reports some error, and of course, it does not work.

I'm trying to mount my SATA drive that has Windows on it under Xubuntu, it's NTFS formatted, I tried adding it to fstab, I know the /dev points are right I checked with sudo lshw -C disk and with fdisk -l, the drive is partitioned 3 ways 1 for Win7, one for Win7's system info partition or whatever, and 1 for documents, but when I try mounting with mount -a with /dev/sda1 (which is where the windows partition should be) I get this:

I have a PC with really low specs ( it's a back up computer) that's running puppy linux but I don't really like it. It's hard to navigate/get things you could easily do on Windows Xp done, it's menus are crowded and well it can't even shut off properly which is a shame. I've had it on for only a week.
Anyways, I've downnloaded the Xubuntu . Iso and burnt it at 1x speed. I pop it in and it does take a long time to go through the install. ( I'm not sure if it's because of the disc read speed or because of the memory and what not) I chose the option to delete everything and install Xubuntu. It works and then I get a couple of error message and then the last one says something like " Can not format sda1" or something like that.

sudo /etc/init.d/psacct start
So far so good. The problem is that if I know do:sudo /usr/sbin/sa I only see root processes. None of the user processes seem to show up. If I run it with -m flag, I just see a total and a root row, no users show up at all. But I do have user accounts on the machine, and I am working in one of them (only root when necessary).why, or what to do about it? Is there something else that has to be configured? As I understand it, sa -m should show a summary for all users, not just for root. I want to be able to see how much time different users are using.
I have an 8gb USB Flash Drive. I am trying to make a Xubuntu 11.04 boot disk from it. I have done this once before with Ubuntu, but not Xubuntu. The problem is that when I go into the Startup Disk Creator, I get this error and the process stops. This is what the Flash drive file structure looks like after the process stops.

I also need to know how to format the replacement hard drive using xubuntu, and which type of format to use - I think I need to use NTFS formatting.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving problems installing Xubuntu 9.04 to my Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know, but available...). Problem is that the CDROM is not working right and the BIOS doesn't support boot from USB so I can't do a complete live CD install via the CDROM or USB.What I'd like to do instead is install the ISO to the HD and run the install from that HD. Even with the CDROM problems I am able to load the Live CD installer from CDROM.
With that I think the best option will be to extract the ISO files to the HD (attach to another computer and extract to a FAT32 partition, then replace HD back in the latitude) then direct the liveCD bootloader to find the install files on the HD. Unfortunately I don't know the necessary commands to pass to the bootloader.

Is it possible to fix this or is it the pen drive physically damaged?
I've checked gdmsetup and there isn't anything that I can see that keeps my general users from getting in remotely. I can get the Gnome to login as root but not as a user. SSH from PuTTY works fine for all users. The error I get actually says that the username or password is incorrect - checked using SSH and it is fine.

All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

post regarding a "Ubuntu-Desktop-Minimal"-type system.
I decided to install the Ubuntu Netbook remix (9.10, I believe) on this extra IDE hard drive I had (my other three hard drives are SATA.) My primary hard drive contains a Windows XP, my second contains Windows 7, and my third SATA drive is just NTFS-formatted storage. I went through the installer and choose to format and install on my 40GB IDE hard drive, which it did. Then it finished and rebooted. It apparently decided to install the GRUB bootloader onto the primary hard drive (not the one it was installed on,) which was not my intention. The bootloader froze the boot of my computer and wouldn't work. (Stuck at loading GRUB.) I couldn't even get to the BIOS. So I pulled the plug on the primary hard drive and tried to boot again. I could get into Windows 7 just fine, but that was it. The problem, though, is that the CD drive (also SATA) no longer shows up in My Computer. Also, after changing the boot order and replugging in the former primary hard drive, it wouldn't show up, either. Nor would the IDE one (though I'm pretty sure that's because Windows doesn't understand the EXT (or whatever Ubuntu uses) file system.
Does anyone know why this occurred and how to get those drives to show up in Windows again? I don't really care to get the netbook remix working here, since this isn't even a laptop, it was just an experiment. Also, I'd love to know how to remove GRUB from my primary hard disk so that I can boot from it again.
When I load the disk I can view my backup drive properly but when I try to view my working drive it shows it as being empty. I also noticed that I had a 1 mg unallocated partition at the beginning followed by my ubuntu partition.
I then ran gparted in terminal and it did show the partition as having my system on it but I am not able to perform any tasks. No moving or resizing.
I'm trying to use mlabel, i installed mtools and cp /etc/mtools.conf to ~/.mtoolsrc. Try to assing a letter to a drive:
drive p: "/dev/sdb1"
but it still does not work. when i do: mlabel -s. it shows: Drive 'P:' not supported Cannot initialize 'P:' mlabel: Cannot initialize drive.
I have three sata drives installed in my machine. 1 is my boot drive, contains a windows install, and a linux install. All is well here. Drives 2 and 3 are simple fat32 volumes, I store my data on drive 2, and periodically sync it to drive 3. I do this simply for backup reasons. It was only recently that I setup this scheme. Previously I had all 3 drives in a fakeraid setup. Raid 5. I broke the array to set things up as I've described. All is well in windows, all 3 drives work as expected. However, in linux (fedora 12), drive 2 shows no partitions! If I do an fdisk -l, it shows sdb1, but if I attempt to mount it, I'm told that /dev/sdb1 does not exist, and in fact, /dev/sdb1 does NOT exist. sdc1 however, does exist, and is mountable.
A few things I've noticed with seem relevant.
Gnome reports a raid5 drive, which if I try to interact with it, fails.
Gparted shows sdb as a standard drive.
Dmesg shows the following, I've grepped out sdb and sdc for comparison, as they should be identical.

I did play around with mdraid while my array was apart, but I cant seem to find any method of testing sdb to see if something is somehow still configured on that drive. I've re-written the partition table, and even performed a low-level format on the drive, nothing seems to restore its function in linux.
Transmission used to show space remaining on the drive you choose in the add window. Now it doesn't. Was this removed? I LOVED that convenience of not having to go to a separate file browser or terminal to show space. I tried posting at Transmissions forums but it's been 4 days with only 7 views and no reason to bump b/c the forum is so slow I'm still on the front page.

Rebooting didn't fix things.I unassigned/reassigned the drive, rebooted, still no good.Funny thing when I unassigned the drive and reboot the system.still see /dev/sdb but no partitions and fdisk -l does not display /dev/sdb.I even did "echo 1 > /sys/block/sdb/device/delete"

i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.
I have a new system using an Intel DG451D main board. I have been trying to get a RAID 1 mirror set working as the main drive in this system and for some reason, my SATA drives - three of them all new have had their SMART data changed to show the drives as failing and in need of replacement. Eventually the drive reports failure to the degree that the BIOS no longer recognises it. When loading the Centos os I was getting differing results because of this issue. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue even - I know that the drives were all very much OK and brand new - no good now! Just putting a feeler out to see if anyone has had a similar issue or to see if anyone knows of any possible known causes for this?
Failing any explanation, can anyone suggest a good desktop style Main Board that supports RAID well for Centos 5.4? I plan to sue this as a small server system so graphics etc are not important here.
