Red Hat / Fedora :: RHEL 4 Exceed Login Shows Display But Can't Log In As User, Only Root?

Jun 9, 2011

I've checked gdmsetup and there isn't anything that I can see that keeps my general users from getting in remotely. I can get the Gnome to login as root but not as a user. SSH from PuTTY works fine for all users. The error I get actually says that the username or password is incorrect - checked using SSH and it is fine.

Fedora :: Cannot Login Other Than Root User

Jun 17, 2011

Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.

General :: Exceed/Exceed 3D Performance Under OpenSuSE 11.2

Aug 3, 2010

We've used Exceed and Exceed3D X server software to run OpenGL 3D simulation software for a long time, and it has always worked great. Now, a new box that runs OpenSuSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6) shows terrible display performance with Exceed.

Exceed 10 on Windows XP works great for OpenSuSE 10 and earlier, but the same display platform grinds to a halt for OpenSuSE 11.2. We tried upgrading to the latest version of Exceed, version 14, but still no joy.

As an alternative, VNC works okay for desktop stuff, but just doesn't run the 3D apps like a dedicated server does (or should).

The reps at OpenText, the makers of Exceed, scratched their heads over this one.

Fedora :: Can't Login As Root Or Any Other User After Hw Upgrade?

Dec 18, 2009

I've recently upgraded my hardware. Now, the system boots perfectly fine, but I can't login to the tty as root or any other user. Infact yes, I can login, but as soon as it shows Last Login, it exits and then I'm back to a login prompt. I've successfully booted into single user mode, and changed all the passwords, but still it fails. X doesn't start, although I think it's due to the old xorg.conf having the wrong driver.

Fedora :: Unable To Login As Root Or Any Other User?

Jul 6, 2010

After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists. Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

Fedora :: Ssh Public Key Login Doesn't Work As Root User

Dec 22, 2010

I've tried to ssh in as the root user w/o a password (RSA keys) but I've had no luck as the root user. I've tried the exact same commands with Debian 5 and Centos 5.5, without a problem. Fedora 13 and 14 won't work! I can only log in w/o a password as a normal user, never as the root user! It always asks for the password if I try as root. I've even tried copying Debian's and Centos's sshd_config file and restarting sshd, but it still won't work.

Code:

mkdir ~/.ssh ~username/.ssh
chmod 0700 ~/.ssh ~username/.ssh
echo "ssh-rsa AAAAB............Jw8V03loeZ username@thehostname" > ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Software :: Acct Sa Only Shows Only Root No User Data?

Feb 21, 2010

I just did a clean install of suse 11.2. I then installed acct, using yast2.Finally I did:sudo /sbin/chkconfig psacct onsudo /etc/init.d/psacct startSo far so good. The problem is that if I now do:sudo /usr/sbin/sa I only see root processes. None of the user processes seem to show up. If I run it with -m flag, I just see a total and a root row, no users show up at all. But I do have user accounts on the machine, and I am working in one of them (only root when necessary).Any ideas why, or what to do about it? Is there something else that has to be configured? As I understand it, sa -m should show a summary for all users, not just for root.I want to be able to see how much time different users are using.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Graphics - (login?) Screen Just Shows Rolling Display Like An Out-of-tune Analogue TV

Jul 2, 2010

I tried installing 10.04 via Wubi on a friend's notebook and have hit problems with the display. The installation seemed to proceed OK (took ages to download / install - left it running overnight) until it came to boot to Ubuntu. The GRUB menu appears OK, but choosing Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with some icons at the bottom, which is displayed for a few seconds, then the (login?) screen just shows rolling display, like an out-of-tune analogue TV. I suspect that I need a graphics driver or something? The notebook is a logiQ notebook, with 128MB SiS Mirage-3 graphics.

OpenSUSE Install :: When Clicking My User Name To Login - The Password Box Would Not Display

Jun 4, 2010

I am not sure if anyone here has any experience with Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux but my problem relates to that product.

I am running 11.2 openSUSE and after installing the latest version of the Kaspersky product in question, I went ahead and restarted the machine. At the logon screen, when clicking my user name to log in, the password box would not display.

I tried clicking on the other option and trying it that way and after putting my name in the username box, the machine just started thinking and thinking and nothing happens.

I also tried logging in through terminal service but it would not recognize my password to be correct.

I really need to log into my username since I have important files on that Linux partition. I tried mounting this partition in Windows since I have a dual boot setup but I can only view the folders of the partition and not the contents.

General :: A Script That Will Display Only The Last Login Of Each User With The Date And Year?

Apr 20, 2010

This is on an old machine that is running Solaris 7. I know that I can run the command script 'last' to get a list of who has logged in. When I do that I get a very long list of lines like:

username pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)

I see that the year is not posted. I have about 11 years worth of logins where users have logged in multiple times over several years.

So, here is what I need: I only need the date of the very last time a person logged in. I also need the year of that last login.

script that will do this? Something with output like

username1 pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 2005 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)
username2 pts/4 110.33.11.18 Tue Apr 20 2009 8:30 - 9:30 (01:00)
username3 pts/4 10.32.11.18 Mon Jun 12 2008 1:30 - 2:40 (01:10)

Debian :: Can't Login As Either Root Or User Following Upgrade

Sep 24, 2015

I can boot into recovery mode, and examine log files. I enabled systemd debug logging and, amid reams of messages, these seem the most pertinent:

Sep 25 02:24:43 cooler systemd[1]: Child 937 (login) died (code=killed, status=6/ABRT)
