I have recently purchased a usb microscope from Maplins, and although it does work with ubuntu 10.4 (and linux mint 9) I cant for the life of me get the led lights to work, the lights are kind of needed when viewing things close up.
Usb microscope link
The output from running lsusb gives the following -
Code:
Like I said it works, tried it with cheese, and I can get close up to stuff, but because the led's don't work it's difficult to get a clear picture with out a torch.

I would like to do is as the subject says, I want to take a music video and then sync several light channels to the music video.
I would like dimming control of the lights as you would have with a DMX 512 system or even Midi. In which the light programming is done in a choreographed sequencing pattern, much like many Midi "piano roll" based editing software.
In a nutshell I would like to do what the Windows program "Vixen" Christmas lighting control program does, but within Linux AND for videos. Sadly Vixen doesn't support syncing to video's at this time...only audio. Another thing is that Vixen also doesn't work with Wine, so it is a no go in Linux.
I would hope that by now there is some kind of video program that does permit syncing to external output devices.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I am thinking of setting up a few X10 lights so that I can turn them on and off at certain times of day/night. I am not to concerned with turning stuff on and off via the web but that might be a nice option. I want to keep it as simple as possible. I have looked over the forums and web but I am not sure about how to start and keep it simple.

I've been an Ubuntu user for a couple of years. I have a Sony Vaio VPCCW-2S1E laptop, with an Nvidia GT330M graphics card. I had worked with Karmic, Lucid and Maverick on this laptop without any problems, until recently, when I had to re-install Maverick.
Now my laptop keeps freezing entirely (no response whatsoever), with two keyboard lights blinking. This happens randomly: sometimes I'm doing something, other times the laptop's completely idle. Sometimes the screen display turns off on freezing, other times not.

I used to work with a PS/2 keyboard. But one key of it has a malfunction. So I bought a new Cherry USB Keyboard. GRUB and the BIOS like it - no doubt, the keyboard itself is OK. But as soon as SUSE 11.1 takes control during boot, the lights of the keyboard are switched off, and the keyboard is deactivated. I even tried to re-install 11.1 from DVD with the USB keyboard plugged in alone - in vain. With the PS/2 keyboard I didn't ever had any such problems. I run a system with a Pentium III (Katmai) on an Intel RC440BX Motherboard.

i am getting really pissed off with my new core i5 system I have a gigabyte p55m-ud2 mobo ([URL]) which's got a Realtek 8111D lan chipset it connected to my router after fresh install of ubun10 and then i installed MacOSX 10.6.3 and it worked there too then i came back to ubuntu and it didn't work anymore, after several restarts it was still not working until i took out the power cord and mobo battery, and reinstalled them back later which caused ethernet to work once again. but then after a while it started not to work anymore, which usually got fixed with a reboot. now this time i had ethernet working and i just resumed from screensaver and it stopped agian
there are no green or orange lights flashing at the back and when i take the cable out and reinsert it nothing comes on but with a shutdown they do come on i don't have this problem on the other harddisk which now has win7 and i some times manually change the sata cable to boot into windows and use itunes and some other stuff to load music to my iphone. I dont like to have dualboot and i dont like to use win7 either i just have it on the other hard disk just in case
is the manual switching of hard disk causing this to happen? why do i get it working with restart/shutdown and when i am using it fine it just decides to stop working after a resume from screensaver or sometimes for other reasons and why does none of this happen on win7 is there a way to reconfigure the ethernet drivers or other stuff without a reboot i am thinking it might be a problem with network manager or a bug or something network manager is really crappy and i used to use wicd until that started to do funky things ( like not connecting to hidden networks, launchpad Bug #473817)

I have a supported BCM4318 "EDUP" wireless card. I am very, very new to opensuse, 2 days old to be exact. However I can read, so I followed the instructions listed in the "Getting Your Wireless to Work" with no avail. It is really weird. I am using the network manager. When I right click on the tiny blue wireless bar down below I see both my network and my neighbors. I click on mine and it asks for my WEP key, I enter it and when I mouse over the icon it sayS that it is obtaining network address. If I click on it at this point it says activating. Then it says waiting for authorization. I have used the fwcutter to download the latest firmware. I have even used ndiswrapper to install from the Edup driver cd. No good! The other thing is, that I am running Ubuntu 9 on the same machine on the same network with the same card and it works.

I'm running a Poweredge 4400 with a 3com card and an intel card covered under e100.
I'm using centos 5.5 in its default server config coming from gentoo.
I have no link on either of the two interfaces, ever. The card initialises with ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready and then falls back to half duplex but still with no connection.
I have manipulated most of the general settings that can be changed with ethtool.
Set to manual configuration with 100/full duplex
The cards are recognized alone and together. I have setup static interfaces with no problems. The ping to the local interface such that:
nic = 192.168.1.10
ping 192.168.1.10
we get back route times and all is well
ping 192.168.1.1
no route...
I have tried several different cables verified good other connections. I have verified the ports I am connecting to work correctly. I have manually shut down the onboard nic (in bios) and tried the 3com card alone. I have tried pci=routeirq, thinking there might be an irq issue.
If this was just the one card, I would install another and move on, but both nics are acting in exactly the same way.

Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705. In earlier versions of the sound settings in Ubuntu, I could press CTRL, then MASTER, PCM and LFE, and the volume buttons, whether on the front, using Fn + UP/DOWN or the slider in the systray would also lower or raise the volume of the subwoofer, because they would all be "bonded" together.
I have tried several things to make this work in later versions of Ubuntu, but nothing's worked. alsamixer won't allow it, sound settings are too simple, the ALSA-packages are so numerous it would take me months to check them all.
I know the solution is as simple as making the volume controls regulate all three, but I don't know how to do it anymore. And it's a real shame actually, because that's the only thing not working on this machine, and it was such an easy fix up until 9.10 (I think)

Everything is plain and simple. I want to know what's the least painful way to control vlc from local command line while having GUI as well?
I would like to e.g. use something like "vlc --pause" in one of my bash scripts to pause music if something hapens. So rc interface is useless, is it not?
not making a thorough search on this as the irrelevance of results is beneath me... Well actually I have made it but it was a while ago and to no avail since the new vlc shipped with karmic got rid of the old http interface which allowed to do this just by using wget on an url....

I'm running Natty with the official Blender 2.57 32-bit build. This same problem occurs with previous version of Blender and Ubuntu, although not with Blender 2.4x or any other programs.Pressing the control key does nothing in Blender. Pressing 'Ctrl+S' causes the active object to scale, as if I just pressed 'S'. If I run 'killall gnome-settings-daemon', it temporarily works normally, but then I lose Gtk themes and icons and stuff.
I'm on a Dell Latitude D620, and I haven't messed with any keyboard settings.I know people using the same hardware and OS that can use Blender fine, so I'm guessing there's some sort of xinput configuration or something that got messed up somehow.

First some background: I currently have iTunes running on a Vista box attached to my TV. I have an Ubuntu box running 11.04 and shairport which serves as remote speakers for the iTunes server. This works fairly well as I can control it with my iPhone, or iPad etc. Very slick interface and my wife loves it .
But I would prefer to not use iTunes to as the server. I would like to let that Vista box sleep most of the day. Doing a little bit of reading it sounds like I should be able to use mt-daapd as a replacement for iTunes. So I installed firefly and gave it a shot. I can get it streaming music fine. But I cannot Apple's "Remote" app to add the new library. When I did some poking I read that I should make a file that ends in ".remote" and put my device name + the pairing passcode from my iPhone in this file.
When I enter the "Add Library" mode on my iPhone it should broadcast an mDNS event. And in fact it looks like it does because: avahi-browse -r -k _touch-remote._tcp Can see my iPhone. But when I do a tail -f on the mt-daapd logfile I never see a connection come up. I have tried debug level 8 in the messaging.Still nothing. In my search for a fix I noticed mt-daapd is no longer being developed but there is forked-daapd. This is actually where I found the instructions for pairing via Remote.
Should I bail on mt-daapd? Will there someday be Ubuntu support for forked-daapd?

Anyone here have a good solution for individually controlling sound output without relying on that individual programs audio settings? For example:I am writing a paper while listening to some nice creative commons jamendo music, and I have to look something up online - I don't want to hear random audio/video advertisements.
or I get a VoIP call and I want that program to continue with sound, but want to mute my 8bit sequencer and whatever else.

I have a very basic problem: My computer is attached to various light switches, central heating, powered windows etc. via RS232 and USB, using homemade custom logic boards. With this I can switch on and off lights, regulate room temperature, open windows etc. all by running some shell scripts on my system. I would now like to create a simple web frontend for this home automation.
What I want is a basic website with buttons, and when someone clicks a button on that website I want the webserver (apache ? ) to execute a script on the the server machine, triggering the rs232 hardware. The website is to be served by apache to make use of an existing structure. How (in what language) could I accomplish that? Javascript and Java are obviously out since they execute on the client, as far as I know PHP can't access the shell (which is probably a good thing), so what's left?
CGI? This will be deployed on an isolated private network secured the old-fashioned way (steel doors, guard dogs, landmines...), so I am not overly concerned about security, but of course it would be nice if the implementation offered at least some basic resistance to bored script kiddies...

In sound control, the bar that shows your volume level has a mark about 75% across that signifies your max volume without digital amplification.[URL] If you drag the settings dongle to the right of that mark, your volume does get louder, but I cannot achieve that effect via my usual keyboard shortcuts (e.g. F8-for-volume-down, F9-for-volume-up). They stop increasing volume at that artificial 100% mark, they do not digitally amplify as I want them to. As a result, every time I want to amplify my volume, I am forced to go all the way into sound control, which (to me) is dumb. Is there a way to set the 100% mark at the ACTUAL far right of the control bar, instead of 75% across, so that my keyboard shortcuts blend right from analog-max to amplification?

Catalyst Control Center (CCC) is not saving the changes I make. I saw a couple of thread about this that had links to instructions on how to install CCC, but it still doesn't work for me.
I start CCC with 'sudo amdcccle' and the GUI appears. I can use it to make changes; however, it never saves them. After clicking OK, it instructs me to restart the system. After a reboot all the setting are back to the default.
I have installed CCC three different ways:
1) sudo aptitude install --without-recommends fglrx-amdcccle | tee fglrx-amdcccle.log
2) sudo envyng -t
3) sudo ./ati-driver-installer-10-2-x86.x86_64.run
In all cases, the fglrx driver works, and 'sudo amdcccle' brings up the GUI, but the changes are gone after a reboot.
Hmm, at the moment, when I click "Apply" and the "Do you want to keep these settings?" 15 second countdown box appears, no changes occur even temporarily.
I've tried doing a fresh install of 9.04, then upgraded to 9.10 (I have problems with the 9.10 command line installer not installing grub) among other things.
