Ubuntu :: Freezes Randomly, Flashing Keyboard Lights

Apr 5, 2011

I've been an Ubuntu user for a couple of years. I have a Sony Vaio VPCCW-2S1E laptop, with an Nvidia GT330M graphics card. I had worked with Karmic, Lucid and Maverick on this laptop without any problems, until recently, when I had to re-install Maverick.

Now my laptop keeps freezing entirely (no response whatsoever), with two keyboard lights blinking. This happens randomly: sometimes I'm doing something, other times the laptop's completely idle. Sometimes the screen display turns off on freezing, other times not.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 Deactivates USB Keyboard - Lights Off

Feb 5, 2010

I used to work with a PS/2 keyboard. But one key of it has a malfunction. So I bought a new Cherry USB Keyboard. GRUB and the BIOS like it - no doubt, the keyboard itself is OK. But as soon as SUSE 11.1 takes control during boot, the lights of the keyboard are switched off, and the keyboard is deactivated. I even tried to re-install 11.1 from DVD with the USB keyboard plugged in alone - in vain. With the PS/2 keyboard I didn't ever had any such problems. I run a system with a Pentium III (Katmai) on an Intel RC440BX Motherboard.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: ATI Catalyst 9.12 -- X Blank Screen / Hard Lock Keyboard Lights Don't Toggle?

Dec 19, 2009

I installed the new 9.12 cat drivers in the usual way (init 3; rpm -e the old drivers; generate new rpm; rpm -i new drivers; init 5), but instead of starting like I expected, I got a blank screen and what appeared to be a hard lock (keyboard lights don't toggle, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and Ctrl + Alt + F1 don't do anything).

I switched back to radeonhd, but I'd like to get the proprietary drivers working if possible.

The usual listings

Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] lsmod | grep fgl
fglrx 2323096 0
[nathan@ebisu ~] modprobe -l | grep fgl
extra/fglrx.ko
Looks like the driver loaded OK...
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] dmesg | grep fgl

Rebooted and selected text mode install, this time it fully installed but on reboot it again has the screen goes dead 10 seconds after you select from the Grub screen.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard / Mouse Unresponsive For 1st Minute Of Start Up - Cause Of It?

Jul 29, 2010

This just started happening recently on an older install of Linux Mint 9, 32 bit, Gnome with Compiz using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I noticed another problem about the same time and I don't know if it is related but now when I restart I get the "default keyring login" pop up message. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for at least 60-90 seconds after everything has opened. It only recently started to do this and is not a result of old/slower hardware.

I don't know where to start looking for a cause or what section to post this in.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Start Terminal From Keyboard Shortcut (11.01 Unity)

May 22, 2011

I've recently upgraded a laptop of mine from 10.10 to 11.04 (Natty), and am having a few issues with it. I don't know how many of these are related to using Unity and how many are just due to the upgrade, but one of the main bugbears is keyboard shortcuts. I have always set the F12 key so that it opens a terminal window. I did this through the settings > Keyboard Shortcuts interface, but although I can (apparently) set this in Unity, it doesn't work. The setting is there, listed, but pressing F12 doesn't open a terminal. Neither does it if I set it to any other key.

I can create a new entry, to start xterm with F12, which works fine but this isn't quite the same as a terminal (it appears different on screen.) I also discover that CTRL+ALT+T doesn't open a terminal window either (as is suggested in a very useful list here: [URL] Have I missed something? Or am I being thick? (Quite possible ... )

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Gives No Signal Message During Install

May 23, 2010

So my computer works reasonably fast running XP (old 3GHz processor with 512RAM), but every so often it simply freezes. I've tried all I can to fix this, but sometimes when I boot up XP it'll get to the window's logo then freeze, sometimes it'll get all the way to the desktop and then freeze, and sometimes it'll start up, run fine for an hour or two then freeze. By freeze, I mean the screen doesn't update, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. Updating NVIDIA drivers doesn't seem to help - some make it worse! So I've had enough, and decided to download Wubi to try Ubuntu on it. I'm not ready to remove windows just yet (lots of data on this machine) and so I don't really want to try dual-booting yet.

Wubi downloads and runs in Windows fine. When I go to restart, after picking Ubuntu from the menu it shows a little text (I think about installation, and press Esc for menu) then my monitor gives a "No Signal" message. So I try restarting (pressing the button), and pressing Esc to bring up the menu. I tried all 5ish options, and "Safe graphics mode" and "ACPI workarounds" seem to last longer, but the same error occurs, before it has even prompted me (still doing its own thing). So I can get up to GRUB, and even get into the grub> prompt. I tried adding irqpoll and/or all_generic_ide to the boot thing (pressing e in the grub menu), but that hasn't helped. I'm unsure of how to find what hardware my computer has (only computer, don't have receipt), but I know "NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Syncing Lights To Music Videos ?

Mar 18, 2011

I would like to do is as the subject says, I want to take a music video and then sync several light channels to the music video.

I would like dimming control of the lights as you would have with a DMX 512 system or even Midi. In which the light programming is done in a choreographed sequencing pattern, much like many Midi "piano roll" based editing software.

In a nutshell I would like to do what the Windows program "Vixen" Christmas lighting control program does, but within Linux AND for videos. Sadly Vixen doesn't support syncing to video's at this time...only audio. Another thing is that Vixen also doesn't work with Wine, so it is a no go in Linux.

I would hope that by now there is some kind of video program that does permit syncing to external output devices.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Fresh Install - No Monitor Signal / Grub Does Not Appear

Jun 22, 2010

I did a fresh install of Lucid Lynx, and now when I start up it shows a blinking cursor for a second or so and then my monitor shows an "Input signal out of range" error. The same thing has happened before, and I was able to fix it by editing the boot options in grub to include 'nomodeset'. However, this time the usual grub loading screen where I would normally press esc to edit the boot options doesn't appear. (Spamming esc doesn't seem to work either.) If it matters (which I have an odd feeling that it does) I partitioned the hard drive into an ext4 partition that mounts at / , a swap partition, and another ext4 partition that mounts at /home . I attached a screenshot of what GParted says about it.

From the many distros I tried with KDE ( openSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, Mandriva ), only in Fedora 12 worked this option, and I hoped it will in F13 too, this is one of the reasons I installed Fedora. Fedora :: USB / MIDI Keyboard - Cannot Get Jack To Start?

Jun 14, 2011

I am a simple musician who bought a laptop that didn't have windows, nor can I afford a Windows license (being a proper poor musician and all). I have an M-Audio KeyRig 49 midi controller that I would like to get some sound out of. How might I do this? I have jack, qjackctl, qsynth, et al but forget qsynth... I can't even get jack to start! I just need to hook this thing up to a piano sample and I'll be happy as anything. I understand that system information can be useful so here goes: Running F14... here are the jack messages (btw, ctrl C does not work when trying to copy from the jack messages window, despite the contextual menu saying it should. That sucks. where do I submit a bug?)

01:51:22.730 Patchbay deactivated.
01:51:22.745 Statistics reset.
01:51:22.799 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket
jack server is not running or cannot be started
01:51:22.811 ALSA connection graph change.
01:51:24.191 JACK is starting...
01:51:24.192 /usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p1024 -n2 -Xseq
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket .....

I have already seen the Fedora Musician's Guide [URL] which is long on theory but short on practical how-to documentation. Is there a better doc I can look at? Do I need to download some special drivers to get this midi interface working? If I plug this thing in to my friend's Mac and run GarageBand, it 'just works' (though GB's piano samples are fairly horrific considering how expensive macs are.) I already own some decent soundfonts but without working jack it seems they aren't much use.

Fedora Installation :: Graphic Adapter - No Input Signal ?

May 3, 2011

I had the following problem while i installed fedora on my machine: The boot record was normally read from the installation CD and the boot screen appear, (up to this moment my Graphic Adapter is going fine) then i select the first option (which is the default as well) to boot fedora from the CD, and suddenly my monitor inform me that there is no input signal. I think it might be some driver problem, but my adapter is pretty common i think (NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT), so its not very likely.

Things i have to note:
1. My Adapter is working on my Windows installation.
2. I manage to install fedora by removing my GeForce 9600 GT and using the on board Graphical Card from my main board.
