For some reason when I open a file downloaded in Chromium, it opens it in Firefox!
Similarly GNOME Do opens files in Firefox.
Why is that?
How to make it use the proper program?
Where are the associations stored?
I downloaded the demo of Penumbra Overture, it is a .sh file (113Mb). I can't open the file. In a terminal I ran chmod +x PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and then sudo ./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and I get an error "./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh: 2: Syntax error: "(" unexpected" . The quotation marks are my own. Is the file corrupted? One of my lugmates thinks it might be a shar file, but Karmic says that it is a shell script. Another friend says that it is too large to be a shell script. Here is the code:

The file for their software downloads and then when I try to open it with the Archive Manager, it gives me this error:

On trying to play the movie via VLC and Divx, what comes up is ' Codec is missing please download and install from [URL]. on going on this site i get what looks like an analysis. on reading it i see highlighted in the category SOA the information says SOA Expire 5 weeks..How do I update this or even what file exactly should I look for when uploading a movie via torrent..

I looked all over the internet on how to figure this out and I couldn't find it.
How did I figure it out? I'm running Xubuntu 10.04 and it doesn't seem to let you just drag and drop the shortcut into a panel from the applications menu. You have to add the panel shortcut manually. To do this, right-click a panel and select Add New Items > Launcher. Then right-click the launcher click properties...
Here's where I got stuck. To make a good launcher/shortcut you need to know the command and put in an icon. I couldn't find the command at first so I put in the icon first instead by clicking on the icon icon (not a typo) in the launcher's properties. Select All Icons from the drop-down menu at the top of the icon selection window. Arbitrarily click on any icon and type chromium. Here's where you find your chromium icon and guess what the name of it is? "chromium-browser" This is how I figured out what the heck the command was to open the stupid thing.
I'm having trouble getting Thunderbird to open links using Chromium (chromium-browser).
The default browser is now set to chromium-browser in KDE system settings. I've also tweaked the Thunderbird config network.protocol-handler.app.http and https settings to use chromium-browser or /usr/bin/chromium-browser.
Despite this, Thunderbird keeps opening links in Firefox. I'm bewildered as to why.
One thought is possibly an old GNOME system setting (there are .gconf and .gnome2 directories in my home directory, though I no longer use GNOME or have it installed on my system). But I don't know and I would have thought the Thunderbird config would have overridden that in any case.
When I'm running without a desktop environment, whenever I click a download in Chromium to open it it downloads another copy instead of opening it in an appropriate program! How do I stop this? Also, what if I just want to view a PDF and not download it to my home dir?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running fluxbox on Arch Linux. When using chromium, I would like associate .doc(x), .ppt(x), etc. with libreoffice by default. If I try to click on the file once it has downloaded in chromium (on bar at bottom) if i add "libreoffice:" to the end of the list of browsers it works like I would like it to.This is obviously not the best method (I am not even certain why it is trying to open the file from other browsers, xdg-open file is quite intimidating)

Refreshing the page fix this again by %50 chance.
But there's no problem with Firefox because I think it uses the Adobe Flash Player (the one in the repo) but Chromium uses the an built-in flash player.
Is there a way to fix this problem? Or a way to disable Chromium's built-in flash player and use the Adobe's flash player?
I'd like to be able to change the program that downloaded PDFs open with in Firefox. I'm using Gnome. Currently, when I double click on a PDF in the downloaded file list, it opens up in Adobe Reader, even though evince is currently the default in nautilus. How I can change it so that downloaded files are opened with evince?
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirefox / Web Browser Can't ipen downloaded images.I have been using Firefox 3.0 with good success, and recently switched to Firefox 3.5 (unbranded version,called A Web Browser).I was looking around in Google images and downloading a few images in Web Browser 3.5, when my problems began.Firefox and Web Browser run off the same profile, and neither browser will open image files correctly.I call Web Browser WB for short.All of a sudden I cannot open jpg images.I saved image as and when the download was complete, I tried to open it.WB needed an application to open with, so I selected to open the containing folder instead. WB needed an application to open with again.
Not knowing the name of the Ubuntu image viewer, (which is eog for Eye of Gnome) I went over to /usr/bin and selected the document viewer, evince, to open the jpg image, which didn't work, so I selected nautilus as the application to open the folder with.Now I can open the folder all right, and from there, I can open the jpg picture from within that folder, but I am now told in the WB and Firefox download window that /path/ to/picture.jpg is not a folder in response to my trying to open the downloaded image.I performed some other checks:I can successfully download and open a pdf document;I cannot open a png or gif image, for they are not folders.
A check of Preferences and Applications tab shows no listing for jpg, gif or png or the word image under content type. There is no provision there to create a new entry, either.I checked and compared Firefox Preferences Applications tab with that of Web Browser. They appear to be identical in content.What do I do next? I will log out of 9.04 and back in again, and if that doesn't work, I will restart the computer after I finish my post. I have recently dual booted an Old Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) It was recommended to me by a friend after XP was becoming unstable. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter finding firefox too slow, i recently shifted full time to chromium. and now i know why it has such a fan following ! its seriously fast, especially as compared to firefox - which at least in my case would appear to have got bogged down because of numerous add-ons etc.
However, there are 2 things that disturb the basic functional of chromium.
- Whenever i click on the browser icon, the window that opens up is never in "maximized" size. so every time i need to double click on the title border to maximize the window. is there some way in which the browser window will open in maximized mode the first time i click the icon ?
- Firefox wouid readily open pdf files within the browser window itself. however, chromium asks me to first save the file at some location, and then only can i open it !
I often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)
The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).
if i run chromium with --enable-gpu-rendering flag chromium's display looks like it's shattered into thousands of pieces and I can't understand a thing. This doesn't happens if I have a previous instance of chromium opened in the usual way, without any flag. In this case if I open another chromium window with the --enable-gpu-rendering flag it's display looks ok, but I can't figure out what's the problem and how could this be fixed if there's solution for it of course.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using xubuntu and there are a few types of files on website that instead of downloading and saving and then opening with emacs, I would rather when the radio button choice comes up say open with emacs. I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

I made a shortcut with chromium browser to listen.grooveshark.com. This is great as it's almost like the grooveshark VIP desktop application like this. However AWN dock groups it with other chromium windows like this:Kuvakaappaus.jpg
Is it possible to force AWN to group this specific chromium window under the Grooveshark launcher that I have in the dock? Turning off grouping does not solve this either, as it just shows grooveshark as another chromium window.
For some time (I don't remember exactly how long/since when, maybe since I switched to i3 window manager?) I have the problem from title.
Chromium browser uses completely different programs to open files than file browser (thunar). And most of the time thunar has associations I want. For example thunar opens PDFs with iceweasel, and chromium opens them with GIMP (!), note that I have never changed this king of settings. Until I changed it today chromium also used Baobab (I didn't even know it existed before I saw it) to open directories ("show file in directory" for downloaded files).
I know how to change for a single file type (at least for browser), but is there some way to set all file types to something sensible and keep both, browser and thunar in sync without doing all of that manually? Or at least revert it all to default?
Debian version: latest "testing" version. (I use testing because I really need up to date versions of a lot of programs)...
