I tried to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10.Every thing went normal until the grub screen wanted me to select which kernel. The wireless usb keyboard and mouse would not work.I found an old keyboard and mouse, they worked.the login screen popped up, I selected the user name and typed the password. After a moment the login screen pops back up.I can log into the recovery console.

I got myself a shiny M305 Logitech mouse for my laptop. It comes with a littlee USB wireless dongle. When I plug in the dongle, DMESG shows me that the system notices the dongle:

usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7

I'm having a pretty small problem, but a pretty weird one.I created an account on my desktop for my 4-year old. But my regular USB mouse was a bit large for his little hands. So, I grabbed the little mouse I use for my laptop for him to use.Problem is, the small USB mouse does not work in his account. It can move the pointer, but clicking has unpredictable results. The small USB mouse works fine in my account. My regular mouse worked fine in his account, just like it works for everyone else. His user account clearly does not have some privilege that is needed for the small mouse to work, but is not needed for the other mouse.

I have recently upgraded to and then reinstalled Maverick (retaining the home directory). After the reinstall the mouse stopped working. It's not a hardware issue as the mouse works fine during the live CD installation. I have tried both a serial and a USB mouse. I have tried reinstalling a couple of times too.
I think I've had this issue before in a previous version but can't remember how I solved it.
I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now, and am by no means an expert. As a result I'm sure you will need more information but am unsure of what information that is or how to get it.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an old Compaq Deskpro with PS/2 ports for the mouse and keyboard. My original mouse is old and has no scroll wheel, so I purchased a new Logitech Optical Mouse with USB. I purchased a PS/2-to-USB converter so that I could plug it in to the PS/2 port. After booting up, the mouse does not work at all. While the computer is on, I can unplug the new mouse and plug in the old one, and the old one will work. But the old one is close to failing, and I need to get a new mouse to work. The configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf did not have a mouse configured, so I tried adding the following code to it:
Code: Section "InputDevice"
Identifier"Configured Mouse"
Driver"mouse"
[code]...

I wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:
1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

My hardware is a Gateway LT2104u netbook.Bought it today, took it out the box and installed the netbook version of Ubuntu. Now here is the problem. The touchpad works fine. I am able to move the mouse all over the screen, the keyboard works find too. The problem is with the mouse click. The clicks are recognized when I am in the 'overview screen'. For example I can click on firefox and it opens. However once firefox is open it does not respond to any clicks. Even clicks to close firefox.
I push Alt+f4 to close the program and then I can click into any other (or the original) programs, but once inside the problem replicates. The problem was present in the 'live cd' during install as well.Does anybody know what might cause this? The whole netbook is useless at this point since I need to click to pretty much do anything in most applications (the Terminal program is one of the few exceptions )

without any warning, mouse clicks stopped having any effect. I can move the cursor without a problem. No apps are frozen and I can type at the command line. But mouse clicks have no effect. The same mouse was working fine before and it works fine in Windows. When I look in /var/log/messages, I see:ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HWfallback to performance governor [OK]I don't know if this is significant or not. The mouse is connected via USB. I'm running Lucid Lynx with all of the latest updates.

I'm having mouse issues with 10.10.
Equipment: Asus Eee 900, Celeron @ 900 MHz w/ 2 gig memory
Mouse: Rocketfish (but issue replicable with mousepad)
When starting a program, the mouse may randomly not work within that program but does work outside of it, or vice-versa. For instance, when starting the text editor, the OS may not recognize mouse clicks inside the program (within the text editing portion, within the text editors menu bar etc.), but it does recognize mouse clicks outside the program (like clicking on the battery icon for battery status). This could also be reversed, where the OS only recognizes mouse clicks within the program but none externally (including the top status bar where the menu options, battery status, and clock are).
IF the mouse is not working inside the program and I click somewhere externally (like the battery status), this seems to temporarily fix the problem and allow clicking inside the program. However, this seems to switch the problem to where I can no longer click externally. This seems to be the only method of switching which area is selectable by mouse, as I have not found a reverse process. This forces me to close the program using Ctrl + Q instead of being able to click out, because the close button is in the top status bar. This seems to happen pretty much universally. If the program is closed, then I can again click any thing on the main screen, including the top status bar.
I am currently running the netbook without the power supply plugged in. I will repost later when the power supply is connected to see if it makes a difference. At first I thought the netbook was locked up, but the mouse still moves and if the cursor is active in a text editing area it still responds to keystrokes. It's not a disasterous bug, but it's annoying.

While Login into ubuntu, open firefox for sometime, my left mouse button usually cannot work, while right button is OK and keyboard is also OK. Mouse pointer can be moved, however left click shows no reaction(when i move the mouse pointer to some certain icon, the icon can be highlighted just as usual but left click still shows no reaction).
I doubted this may be firefox's problem, but when I kill firefox-bin and firefox process through the terminal(keyboard is ok and i can use ALT+F2 to enter gnome-terminal), Left mouse button still cannot work. And then I have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and reboot the system. My ubuntu is 10.10, updated several days ago(this problem has been existed before the update)

I just updated my computer, 64 bit Lucid. Now my V7 mouse wont work. I know V7 is some Microsoft subsidiary, but my alternate Microsoft mouse works just fine. WTH? I have 4 of these computers in a Lab and I want them all to match. Plus, my keyboard is V7, so I'm getting paranoid that I might start getting keyboard errors. So my mouse was fine, I updated some recent updates, and now my old mouse wont work. What should I do?

I have a problem with a new mouse that I just bought. I cannot get my new Cyborg R.A.T 3 mouse to run under kubuntu. I am able to control the cursor and click on items that appear in it's immediate window. Example: I can click K start icon, but I can't interact with the actual start menu once I've opened it.

The keyboard and mouse won't work while live booting Ubuntu from CD on a Acer Verition M264. I've tried PS/2 and USB mice. This problem starts from when Ubuntu loads, keyboard and mouse is fine until that point. There's also a complaint message once it's loaded up: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet".
On a Dell Inspiron and a Acer Aspire X3200, Ubuntu 9.10 works just fine.

I just installed kubuntu 9.10 on my new PC (HP Pavillion). I'm new to ubuntu, I had some experience before with mandriva. Most things work properly but there is a strange problem with the mouse (USB), and more precisely with that little wheel which stands between the two buttons. Turning it when the pointer is on some web page (using firefox) I expect the page to scroll. So I turn the wheel in one direction and the page scroll up. Good!I tried with other programs (konqueror, kmail)... and still the same happens, I can only scroll to the top.

I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode. Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver

My wireless mouse stopped working about a week after i bought it. i replaced the batteries, and tried restarting my computer. I also tried putting the receiver in all of the other usb ports, to no avail. Where is the driver software that was installed when the receiver was plugged in located on my computer? I plan to un-install this and hope that it works when it is installed again.

I have a Logitech Wave keyboard and mouse for my computer. I am not sure which version of Ubuntu I am running on but I think it is 6.10. When I boot up my computer I can go into the BIOS and earlier today it would even let me press escape to seee which operating systems I could boot. Now it no longer lets me see the operating system I have (which is why I cant say which version of Ubuntu I have). It takes me to the log in page and asks for the username and password but I cant type and I cant move the mouse. Earlier I could also use Alt+F1-F12, but this is no longer working either so it just sits at the login page and nothing works at all. The computer that is having this problem is very old it is a Proteva and when I opened up the actual computer the processor says:
At startup the computer says that the processor is a: AMD K-6
I know that the BIO's are to old for Ubuntu to run properly because at startup it also says that: "ACPI :
BIOS age (1998 ) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is required to enable ACPI" it also says that: "ACPI : unable to load the System Description Tables."
I have'nt used this computer for about a year or two, but the last time I used it it worked perfectly fine. I have been seeing questions on the forums similar to mine, but their problems are on other versions of Ubuntu and their mouse's are said to work fine. I cant try any of the solutions for the problems I have read about because I cant open the prompt that you get when you are at the log in screen and press F2. I have no idea what to do.

It appears that clicking on a link in Firefox doesn't work until you move the mouse, i.e. if I put the mouse on a link and hold it stationary and click the link, nothing happens, but as soon as I move the mouse, the link then activates. Sometimes, I have to double click the link to get it to work. I've read some posts where people claim that Firefox "freezes" until you move the mouse. In my case, Firefox doesn't "freeze" in the traditional sense. It just that clicking a link doesn't behave properly as it should. I didn't have this problem in 8.04LTS (or previous distributions for that matter) only in 10.04LTS. I'm running the 32-bit version on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with nvidia-common driver 0.2.23.
