Ubuntu :: Grub Displays "Windows Vista (Loader)" Which Didn't Install

Mar 4, 2011

On my notebook there was a preinstalled OEM Windows 7 Home Basic (disk C, sda1). I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on disk D, and was not using Windows 7 any more, although the "seventh" was present n main loading menu and in grub menu. 2 days ago I discovered, that in grub menu appeared "Windows Vista (Loader) - sda1" ! I didn't install it, and I'm sure that nobody else had access to my notebook. "Windows 7 (Loader)" now links to sda2.

When I try to run this strange "Windows Vista (Loader)", appears the Windows loading screen, than the empty Windows desktop background, and than the system reboots. How can Windows Vista (Loader) appear in grub, if nobody installed it? Can it be an imitation of Vista loader, made by some malware? How to remove this item from grub?

Installation :: Vista Recovery With Grub Loader?

Mar 8, 2009

I have a laptop which was originally running Windows Vista, I attempted to install Windows XP on via USB since the laptop couldn't boot the install disk (this has turned out to be a bad disk drive. This fell flat on its back and wouldn't even finish the install (although not before formating the Vista install in to oblivion). Although I was extremely careful to leave the Vista recovery intact. So I managed to get Ubuntu 8.10 (XFCE if that makes any difference) installed over USB. I was wondering, Could I use the GRUB louder to boot into the recovery drive? Laptop is a Toshiba Equium L350D

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Boot Loader After Re-installing Windows XP ?

Mar 21, 2011

This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.

I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Loader Will Not Run If Windows Is Set As The Active Partition?

Apr 6, 2011

A few days ago my Laptop wouldn't hibernate in Windows 7, I managed to fix this problem by going into Windows' Disk Management tool and setting the C:/ Partition as the active partition, this fixed my hibernation issue, however I have just noticed that now when I boot my laptop my GRUB menu no longer appears, instead it just loads Windows straight away as if it was the only OS on my laptop.

I've confirmed it's something to do with my recent Disk Management change as I booted up GParted, removed the boot flag from Windows and when a rebooted my GRUB menu reappeared.

Not sure on how I can both have Windows as the active partition while being able to keep GRUB working also.

My Partition Setup is as follows:

/dev/sda1 C:/ Windows 7 (NTFS) (Boot Flag Set)
/dev/sda2 D:/ DATA (Documents and stuff) (NTFS)
Unallocated 1 MB
/dev/sda3 Extended 146.49 GB (LBA Flag Set)
/dev/sda5 Linux Swap 2.01 GB
/dev/sda6 ext4 20.00 GB
/dev/sda7 ext4 124.46 GB
Unallocated 10.00 MB

I'm running openSUSE 11.4

I have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.

Ubuntu :: Loading Vista From Grub Loader - Black Screen With A Flashing Underscore Character

Jun 29, 2010

I installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Won't Boot - Displays Windows Logo And Then Drops Back To The Grub Menu

Jan 9, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dualboot - Install Vista Loader With 10.10?

Dec 5, 2010

I want to dualboot my HP laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. The problem is that the harddrive had 4 primary partitions. So i had to delete the Recovery and HP TOOLS partions. I did that after creating my system recovry CDS. The "install alongside another operating system" option showed up. And i was really happy for about 1 minute until i discovered that it said Windows Vista loader! So now i have this:

sda 640GB harddrive
sda1 Windows 7 loader
sda2 Windows Vista loader

And when im trying to install a dualboot the Windows 7 loader dosent show up! It wants to install Vista loader but i dont have that operating system. I have read that 7 and Vista sometimes gets mixed up in GRUB can this be the case here? Is it safe for me to install Vista loader with Ubuntu 10.10?

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem. Grub Rescue> - No Longer Have The Install Disk For Windows Vista

May 11, 2011

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.

Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.

I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Loader / When Power Up Its Saying GRUB Loader Failed?

Nov 16, 2010

I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)

Dec 20, 2010

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.

No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts, experiences, similar issues - whatever?

Ubuntu :: Change From GRUB Loader To Windows MBR?

May 3, 2011

It's in the title - I just want to change from the GRUB loader back to the Windows MBR loader. It's probably something simple, I guess. It's just I don't want to see the GRUB loader (first) when I turn on my computer I want to see the normal Windows MBR.

If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.
