I have Lubuntu and Windows has disappeared from the GRUB. I have seen in other questions that it is usually solved editing menu.lst, but I don have such a file in /boot/grub/

After the last Lubuntu update Windows XP disappeared from the grub and it doesn't appear on the OS list. Is there any way I can fix or restore the grub to display XP again? I ran TestDisk and the XP partition is there undamaged, it also appears in the file system and I can access the files in Lubuntu; it's just not appearing in the grub anymore.

I presume that it has supperceided the GRUB. How (where) can I put the Grub back - (bearing in mind that the only way to run Ubuntu is to run it fron CD)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed Debuan "jessie". I previously had Windows 8.1 and Xubuntu installed. After installation Debian installed it's own version of GRUB, with entries for Debian, Xubuntu and Windows. The problem is that after I selected Windows when booting, GRUB menu no longer appears. It boots straight into Windows.
It's lenovo Ideapad z510 laptop, with special button that allows me to select between 4 options before booting - one of them is "Boot menu".
I didn't use it before windows "removed" GRUB, but now there are 2 options: Windows boot loader and Ubuntu. When I select Ubuntu it loads my old boot menu (from before installing Debian).
I thought that when I use update-grub from Xubuntu I will at least eb able to boot into debian. After I did that Debian option appeared in the GRUB menu, but it didn't work - black screen.
How to get GRUB menu working again (and avoid replacing it by windows boot loader)?
I installed a new Ubuntu OS in my computer, (I downloaded it yesterday) on a dual boot pc (windows xp) Installation went smooth until it reached grub-pc. It was installing grub-pc (1.98 lubuntu6). It hanged there for several hours. Finally I interrupted the installation. When I went to the installed packages I got a message telling: Grub-PC 1.98 Lubuntu 6 Failed to Install or Upgrade. I'm pretty new to Linux so I know nothing about it, but I wish to go away from Windows XP.

I dont quite know what ive done, but after ive reinstalled my ubuntu 10.04, my grub boot menu seems to have dissapeared. my computer will still boot after a while but with no sign of the grub menu. The problem is, that when it boots it sets of the warning buzzer on my laptop (as if it cant find anything boot) this goes on for about 10 seconds before it finally gets round to booting. is there anyway i can restore my grub boot menu?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Lubuntu on my dell Latitude C400. Recently I had Unbuntu, but my system was to slow for it. The wireless worked when I installed sl-modem-daemon_2.9.11~20100303-2_i386.deb, however this does not work with Lubuntu. I have used the ndiswrapper to install a driver from windows, and still it is not installed.
After iwconfig i get
lo no wireless extensions
eth1 no wireless extensions
The other problem is this laptop has no cd dive and the ethernet connection does not work, so I can t do updates.
As you can see from the title, after the openSUSE 11.3 installation it is impossible to use Ubuntu 10.4 anymore because the grub only gets these three options: openSUSE, Windows XP and openSUSE failsafe.

After I rebooted I got a command prompt with a notice stating Minimal BASH-like line editing is suppoerted. When I input the final command of sudo update-grub I get the unknown command error. I cannot get to either XP or Ubuntu is there anything I can do short of reloading my ubuntu?

1 I have XP installed on HDD1 (SATA 200 Gb master). Now I installed Cetos 5.5 (use 4.1 Gb DVD1) on the second drive, HDD2 (Seagate STA 40 Gb slave.) I didnt fund the option for selecting boot location during installation, just selected second drive. I think this is my first mistaking. The Centos can�t boot up after initial installation. I disconnected the HDD1 (XP drive.) Then finished Centos install. � Second mistaking.
2 After that Sentos installed, I reconnected HDD1 but XP is disappeared. The grub.cfg shows about XP as:

3 For finding XP I disconnected HDD2 (Sentos), but XP can�t be started. This message is shown up:

4 I think that stuff was written by grub. I decided to get rid of them then reinstall all. I tried to deleted and create new partition, format c:, fixmbr, and fixboot, then install XP on c:. But above message still shows up when boot machine. I have to use XP install cd to start Windows XP.

When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

Windows close and minimize buttons have disappeared in Genome. In other desktops like KDE and cfxe they are present BUT I am using Gnome.My distro is Ubuntu ultimate 2.7 64bit.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
installed windows 7..then tried restoring grub using live cd....mounted partition somewhere else....then installed ubuntu again where it was installed previously and now grub is not detecting windows 7 but i am able use my windows files
used sudo update-grub2.
I had to dual boot my computer again with windows unfortunately for school. This is something I've dealt with dozens of times in the past but when I try to recover grub 2 with the ubuntu live cd I get this:
sudo grub
sudo: grub: command not found
I do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.
I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?
