Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Is Listed In Grub?

Jan 3, 2011

1: In my grub menu Windows 7 is listed, I don't know why. Win7 was installed on this computer before, but I formatted the HDD before I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. How to remove it?

2: When I boot I don't get a boot image, only a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Not a big deal, but I would like to have a normal boot image. Any ideas how to fix it? I tried googling but I only find old threads. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 7735Z

Graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 4570. BTW; I got no other problems what so ever. Everything works great really.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Kernels Listed In Grub

Jan 2, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 and a day later updated with all the suggested security and recommended updates. Now I notice that in my Grub there are two different kernel versions listed. Are they both necessary? Can I / should I get rid of the older one, and if so, how?

I ask because after all these updates I notice my computer runs much slower, so I don't want it overloaded with unnecessary software.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Versions Listed In GRUB 2?

Feb 24, 2010

I have a dual boot desktop with WinXP on C: and Ubuntu on D:. GRUB 2 handles the start-up. Having installed multiple updates to Ubuntu, my GRUB menu now lists:

2.5.31-19-generic
2.5.31-17-generic
2.5.31-16-generic
2.5.31-15-generic
2.5.31-14-generic

and (recovery mode) for each of the above, along with the mem test and WinXP.Is there any reason I need to list all these variants of Ubuntu? If not, can I simply edit them from the GRUB config file or must I do something else to actually uninstall them?

Ubuntu :: Non Existent Kernel Listed In Grub?

Aug 26, 2010

I recently upgraded to 10.04, but it gave me a heap of problems, so I've reinstalled 9.10. Everything seems to be working again, but Grub seems to think that the 2.6.32-24 kernel is installed. When I try to boot it, it gives me a ton of errors that basically say it can't find what it's supposed to mount, so I'm assuming that it's left over from Lucid.Thing is, I can't find the kernel in synaptic to uninstall it, but when I update grub, it still lists it as being there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Extra OS Listed In Grub Menu?

Jun 25, 2010

I have a extra OS listed in my grub menu. I'm dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I am able to boot into both Ubuntu and Windows. 30_os-prober has two menu entries for Windows though. The first one is Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) and the second is Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2). My laptop came with Windows 7 and had 4 primary partitions (System, Windows, Recovery, HP_TOOLS). After making my recovery disks I removed the Recovery partition and shrunk the Windows partition to make space for Ubuntu. So Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) is the System partition which I select to boot Windows. Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2) is where my Windows 7 is installed. Here is output from Boot Info Script:

Ubuntu :: Grub 2 - User Listed At Bottom Of Login Screen

May 23, 2010

Ever since the intro of Grub2, on the main Log-in screen, there is a "User" listed at the bottom of whoever is listed on the Users Log-in. Just what or who is this used for?. If it is 'clicked' on, then it asks for a password, as if 'it' is some kind of "user". But, as I don't know just what 'it' is for, therefore I also don't know 'its' password either.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Not Listed In Grub2 After Windows Installation

Jul 22, 2011

i was dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 with grub2 as the boot loader then I had to reinstall windows because of some issues, during the installation I had to DELETE the partition windows was installed on then create a new one, this was the ONLY Primary partition in the hd and it was the partition grub2 installed on.

After the installation finished, i loaded an ubuntu live cd and reinstalled grub2 using the graphical tool "boot-repair", it worked and windows 7 appears on the list but ubuntu does not!. I tried sudo update-grub2 (found a tutorial to make this command work in Live CD) but the problem still exists. I also tried booting using the command line (set root=(hd0,1)....etc) but it doesn't work, windows boots when the value is set to 1 but when I try 2 I get an error.

Is there a way to verify that the ubuntu installation is still working and how can I make it appear on grub2 if it's still working. As I said the deleted windows partition was the only Primary partition and the / & /boot & /home & swap were all logical, do I need to set / partition to be Primary in the installation?

part of fdisk -l:

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Ubuntu :: Drives Not Listed After Removing Raid Works In Windows 7?

Oct 29, 2010

I have two 1.5TB hard drives (neither one are my OS drives) that don't show up under "Places", but are detected under "Disk Utility". I tried to reformat them, but Ubuntu tells me that they are in use (even they are not mounted). gparted also detects them and shows them as being NTFS parition. I have deleted and repartitioned to NTFS as well. This works until I restart my computer. The funny thing is that Windows 7 sees them just fine. More detail as to how this happened below after system specs.

System:

AMD Phenom II x 4 955
ASUS M4A79XT EVO motherboard
8GB DDR3 1333
1 500GB WD SATA drive (dual boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu 10.10)
2 1TB WD SATA drives (extra storage)
2 1.5TB Seagate SATA drives (extra storage, these are the problem children)

Here's how I got here:

Installed a dual boot w/ Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. Everything was fine and ALL drives showed up and were mountable in Ubuntu. I decided to set up a RAID 1 w/ my two 1.5TB drives. I restarted, changed my SATA to be RAID instead of IDE and created my RAID 1. I then realized that through this motherboard's RAID setup, I couldn't have it copy files from one disk to the other to set up the mirror. So, after I rebooted and the RAID started building, I cut the power and unplugged my drives in a desparate attempt to keep my data. I then went back into the bios and set my SATA back into IDE instead of RAID. I was able to back up my data, but this is when the problem started.

Again, Windows 7 sees and uses the drives just fine. I copied the data I wanted from my 1.5TB drives to my 1TB drives and restarted into Ubuntu. But, no 1.5TB drives appeared under Places. I started Disk Utility and confirmed that Ubuntu does actually see the drives. However, it still lists them as being part of a RAID array (I did delete my RAID array properly through the BIOS after backing up my data). I'm not sure why it thinks that and I believe that's my problem. Also, Disk Utility lists a THIRD 1.5TB drive under "USB and Peripherals". Could that be my MB telling Ubuntu that a RAID is still set up even though I deleted the RAID pair?

What I have tried:Reformatted drives via Windows 7 as NTFS. This completed but didn't solve my problem.Repartitioned the drives with gparted as NTFS. This works until I restart my computer. Attempted to reformat under Ubuntu, but it gives me an error saying the drives are busy.Reinstalled Ubuntu (but didn't reformat). Didn't work. What I'm thinking:Flash my BIOS so my MB starts out fresh and hopefully doesn't tell Ubuntu I have a RAID anymore. Reinstall Ubuntu again (this time reformatting my OS drive).
Anyone have ideas as to what's going on? FYI I'm new to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)

Dec 20, 2010

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.

No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts, experiences, similar issues - whatever?

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Mess Up GRUB And Still Add Windows 98 To GRUB Menu?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?

One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Overriden By Old Windows XP Entry - After Reinstall Grub

Oct 7, 2010

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is

1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.

2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.

3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.

4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.

5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting

6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows

7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.

"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?

I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Ubuntu :: GRUB Won't Boot Into Windows 7, And Windows 7 Recovery Erases?

Jan 1, 2010

Whenever I select Windows 7 under GRUB, it just hangs at a flashing underscore windows 7 is installed under my first primary partition, what should the GRUB section look like for it? I can't check what mine looked like because this happened:I started up the windows 7 recover (another option under GRUB, on hd(0,3). 7 is on hd(0,1)) and it worked. I decided that i wanted to try something else before i restore my windows 7 partition to its factory state, so i exit the recovery thing. Next thing I know, my Ubuntu partition is completely gone, along with my grub.cfg files -.-

Partitions are like this in this order:
sda1: Windows 7 (can't boot into)
sda8: ubuntu (gets erased)
sda5: partition i'm going to use soon for another distro

[Code]...

oh, and by default, there was like 20 MB of free space in front of my windows partition (idk why asus did that) and when i shrunk my first partition (the windows one) it moved it all to the left -.- do you think something when wrong while doing that?

Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

Red Hat / Fedora :: Dual Booting SL6.1 And Windows - After Editing The Grub.config To Include Windows

Jul 2, 2011

i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)

The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.

My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.
