How do I edit the Versions listed in GRUB?
I have at least 25 different Versions listed in my GRUB Screen but they are not in the menu.lst !?

I have a dual boot desktop with WinXP on C: and Ubuntu on D:. GRUB 2 handles the start-up. Having installed multiple updates to Ubuntu, my GRUB menu now lists:
2.5.31-19-generic
2.5.31-17-generic
2.5.31-16-generic
2.5.31-15-generic
2.5.31-14-generic
and (recovery mode) for each of the above, along with the mem test and WinXP.Is there any reason I need to list all these variants of Ubuntu? If not, can I simply edit them from the GRUB config file or must I do something else to actually uninstall them?
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

2: When I boot I don't get a boot image, only a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Not a big deal, but I would like to have a normal boot image. Any ideas how to fix it? I tried googling but I only find old threads. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 7735Z
Graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 4570. BTW; I got no other problems what so ever. Everything works great really.
I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 and a day later updated with all the suggested security and recommended updates. Now I notice that in my Grub there are two different kernel versions listed. Are they both necessary? Can I / should I get rid of the older one, and if so, how?
I ask because after all these updates I notice my computer runs much slower, so I don't want it overloaded with unnecessary software.
I recently upgraded to 10.04, but it gave me a heap of problems, so I've reinstalled 9.10. Everything seems to be working again, but Grub seems to think that the 2.6.32-24 kernel is installed. When I try to boot it, it gives me a ton of errors that basically say it can't find what it's supposed to mount, so I'm assuming that it's left over from Lucid.Thing is, I can't find the kernel in synaptic to uninstall it, but when I update grub, it still lists it as being there.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a extra OS listed in my grub menu. I'm dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I am able to boot into both Ubuntu and Windows. 30_os-prober has two menu entries for Windows though. The first one is Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) and the second is Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2). My laptop came with Windows 7 and had 4 primary partitions (System, Windows, Recovery, HP_TOOLS). After making my recovery disks I removed the Recovery partition and shrunk the Windows partition to make space for Ubuntu. So Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) is the System partition which I select to boot Windows. Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2) is where my Windows 7 is installed. Here is output from Boot Info Script:

View 9 Replies View RelatedEver since the intro of Grub2, on the main Log-in screen, there is a "User" listed at the bottom of whoever is listed on the Users Log-in. Just what or who is this used for?. If it is 'clicked' on, then it asks for a password, as if 'it' is some kind of "user". But, as I don't know just what 'it' is for, therefore I also don't know 'its' password either.

I've recently reinstalled all the os's on my computer, just now I'm going with ubuntu (general use) win xp (for flash, it doesnt play nice with 7 for some reason) and win 7 (for games). Everything is fine, but I can't get grub to boot me straight into either of the windows versions: Each option makes brings me to the windows bootloader, where I can choose between "Windows 7" and "Older version of windows". I want to go directly from grub to xp/7, without that extra menu. How do I get rid of it?

I'm interested in editing the Grub startup menu to take out some of the previous versions of Ubuntu. First, is there a reason Grub keeps the previous versions available to boot to in that list? If it is just in case of a problem with the new installation wouldn't it make sense to only have the most recent previous installation? Anyway here is the problem, when I run: Code: "gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"
The editing program opens the file named "menu.lst" but the file is empty. How is it possible for this file to be empty yet I have multiple boot options and they all work? Does anybody know what I am running into here?
I'm wondering how I would go about dual-booting Ubuntu with openSUSE installed first?
I'm just a little bit concerned about the versions of Grub overwriting the openSUSE version or theme or something.
Would it work okay if I just shrink my openSUSE partition and then set the Ubuntu installer to install Ubuntu to the free space only or do I need to edit the grub file and stuff?
I installed Fedora13. But my Windows is Gone. I followed Next-->Next and completed installation after 1 hour. When i restarted the system, isaw blue screen something called grub and windows is not listed. I had important data in it where did it go?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had windows 7 installed on my system prior to the installation of Lucid Lynx. The boot loader for windows is installed in /dev/sda1. The main windows installation is in /dev/sda3 Ubuntu is installed in /dev/sda5.
The grub update has added a loader for windows 7 for /dev/sda3 instead of /dev/sda1. How do i change that to /dev/sda1 in grub 2.0 as it says that it is not recommended to edit grub.cfg in grub 2.0. I know i can add something in custom section but I am not a pro in linux hence i'm not sure how to add that
I had to followed this tutorial on how to Install ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114. I am stuck on step 2 now. I used one of the options and was able to get Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 onto my laptop. But now on my first restart I have to edit the GRUB menu and change the boot option so I will no longer then the black screen when booting. Only problem is I can't get to the edit GRUB menu. I turn the computer on select Ubuntu to boot. A black screen shows up I hit e to edit then the Ubuntu loading screen comes up (The one that says Ubuntu and has the dots below it) That screen stays up for about a half a second and it goes back to black and hangs there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used Ubuntu a few years back. I simply was not able to make it my main OS since I couldn't get video calling to work reliably enough. Anyways I just installed and noticed my grub menu had many more entries then I have operating systems on my computer. Some reason they came up as duplicates. I have so far gathered they took away my menu.lst, they replaced it with something like etc/general/grub. It appears editing this file doesn't give me the ability to change entries. There are a few I would like to rename, and a few I want to get rid of. There is also some other file that is not supposed to be edited, will I need to edit this or is there another way around it? I found info like this, but it is only adding not removing.
Assuming that you already looked at the grub2 documentation and had trouble figuring out what to do, try this. Use sudo to edit /etc/grub.d/40_custom. It will look like this:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0 .....
After making the change, run 'sudo update-grub' to apply the change to your grub config.
TLDR: Grub 2 added extra entries, how do I remove and rename some?
i have to edit grub etc/default file but when i open it, it is a read only file (i have to put "i915.modeset=1" in it ) i think i need to do it through the terminal

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have GRUB to allow me to boot windows and Ubuntu, i recently noticed that my list of kernels is getting clogged up with all the updates. So i went online to try and find out how to get rid of the unwanted partitions and also how to add new ones - i am going to attempt to hackintosh, and will need to know how to add kernels. What i found out was; the boot menu in GRUB had a file that is supposed to be called 'menu.lst' (Lst not ist), and that all i needed to do was edit this, that it wouldn't delete the kernels, but that i don't need to, i only need to add and remove links to kernels on the GRUB menu. The problem is that after looking, i don't have that menu.lst file, i have a file containing the image files for 'memtest', but not for my GRUB. I am using 10.04, i don't know what version of GRUB im using but i'm using whichever one comes with 10.04. Could someone please point me in the direction of the files i need to edit or what i need to do to add and remove kernels?
