after upgrading to 11.04, I can't use the fn-f2 combination anymore to activate the wifi card. I'm using a Dell latitude laptop. Wifi is functioning normally when it's on and I can even turn it off with the hotkeys. When I try to turn it back on, the light goes on for a second and than dims again. I than have to reboot into Windows to get it back on, which is kind of annoying.

i have a dell 1501 that has been upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. everything was working okay. and then the user ran an upgrade recently. subsequently the wifi has mysteriously stopped working. it connects okay if one plugs it directly into the router but the wifi seems to have just stopped working.my mini 9 connects fine to the netgear wifi router using wireless.when i run the system tests for networking i get the errors..."root could not find def gateway info /proc""root could not find default gateway by running route"here is the output from some diagnostic commands.NOTE:this is similar to a post titled "wi-fi dead?" but the output is not quite the same...

lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

A couple of days ago I followed a guide online in order to install Adobe Reader and this guide recommended a specific package that needed the jessie repository, I added it (unaware the jessie was the name of the new distribution on testing) and so I found myself upgrading to Jessie, which is fine since is working quite alright, but since then I can't sent any document to my wi-fi printer.
I had no problem with Wheezy, I installed two printers: one connected to the usb interface and the other one to the wifi (but is actually the same). With Jessie when I try to print something and select the wi-fi one nothing happens. If i try to add a new one I can't since debian doesn't find it and I can't even delete the old "malfunctioning" one.

My Intel Corporation WiFi Link 1000 Series wireless card stopped working yesterday after I did an update via Update Manager. After the upgrade, wireless is disabled and the option to enable it in Network Manager is grayed out. I thought that it might be the new kernel, but changing back to the old kernel I still have the problem.

I have lost wifi access with the upgrade to 11.4.Previously, the receiver icon showed on left click a menu of available networks, and on right click, available network by network settings for editing. The menu also included enable wireless connection and enable wired connection. I have wireless enabled.
But with the upgrade, the same menu appears on left click or right click, and they both show a greyed out "wireless disconnected" tab, so you can't connect from there, the tab is disabled. There's also no place else to go to find available networks or to lock into one. There also does not seem to be a place to find wired networks either.I installed my wifi network in it, and put in the correct password and set it to come on automatically, and 3x restarts did not yield any changes. Apparently network finding is disabled in this version or at least my copy.It isn't the computer: I'm on line with it now on the Windows XP side.
This is doubly problematic because if I can't get on line, I can't download a fix, and even if I could by downloading it to the Windows side, it is probably a binary with some very scripts and meticulous BASH coding or tarballing something else that I have no idea how to do even with a walk through by an expert because most of the time the experts assume I know as much about using a Linux terminal and code as they do, and I basically know absolutely nothing, it is all Greek to me from the point at which they say "open a terminal." "Go to root" might as well be said in Chinese as far as its usefulness to me. What is the plan here? A complete redo from the get go?

I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 but other than that the most annoying thing I've found is that my wifi will randomly disconnect from the network...like it will say its still connected but pages wont load and all my torrents just stop, and then I have to manually disconnect from the network and then reconnect and it works for about a min and then happens again. I couldn't even get enough internet to post this from my laptop so I had to post this at school from a windows. Idk whats going on but it sucks because I cant really use the comp without the internet..

I'm running Ultimate Edition 2.4 on an Acer Aspire 3500 lappy, yesterday I allowed my system to upgrade the kernel (from 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-18 generic) as per usual but when it rebooted I had no WiFi. The network manager didn't even have a wireless section, only wired, and I couldn't setup a wireless network either. If I reboot into the earlier 2.6.31-17 kernel everything is OK.
Another problem is that even tho I have no screensaver enabled and no power saving options enabled, (ie screen never disabled) after a short time of no use the screen goes blank. If within a few minutes I touch the pad or hit a key the screen returns but if it's been an hour or so nothing I do will wake it up,even tho there is still disk activity etc, and the only way to recover is with a hard reset, hold power key to reboot.

I'm facing a strange problem after upgrading my Ubuntu to 10.10. After I start up the system, the wifi is not getting connected by default (which was getting connected automatically in the earlier version). So I right click on network manager and click on 'Enable Wireless' option and it gets connected. So far so good. Now I close the laptop lid - it goes to sleep mode and after it wakes up, the wifi never gets connected. When I right click on the network manager icon, the 'Enable Wireless' option is disabled! I have to reboot my machine to get connected!
Here are the details:

I would like to re-raise this topic that I have seen on other discussion boards but seems to be going no where.I have been using Ubuntu for many years now having switched from other distributions. All my machines ran some version of Ubuntu, until just recently. I upgraded my personal HP TX2500 from 9.04 to 10.04. No problems. After 10.10 had been out for a while I upgraded again. The wireless would drop when busy/(signal slightly weakened) etc. It would not function again unless the wifi module was reloaded.
Then I installed 10.10 on my HP NC6400 the same thing occured. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 instead. It seemed no better. After some Googling, it seemed I was not alone. I tried all the suggestions I could find and none of them worked. One suggestion was to install Fedora 14. This works perfectly on the nc6400. The HP TX2500 has been reinstalled back with 10.04 where the wireless seems ok and I assume I am stuck there for a while.
Now my question is why would the networking behave this way for Ubuntu 10.10 (10.04 as well on the NC6400) but wireless on Fedora 14 is perfect (I mean really good! Better than either Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 on any of my laptops) on the NC6400. I am hoping that we can find a way to fix this, otherwise I will likely have to drop Ubuntu completely because I do not have an upgrade path for laptops. There must be many other users in the same position who are not discussing it and just rebooting each time this occurs. This must give a negative perception of otherwise great software.

i've got an IBM thinkpad 1858. fedora 11 & 12 (KDE spin) were always running without any major problems. today, i upgraded the system from f12 to f14 using preupgrade (and a wired internet connection). the upgrade process went smoothly.
but now i don't have a wifi connection anymore - there is no icon shown in the system tray and the led does not blink. the network configuration tool shows eth1 to be inactive and the button to activate it is grey.
lspci -v shows:

Subsystem: Intel Corporation IBM ThinkPad R50e

On ubuntu 10.4, I upgraded my laptop from a fluky Broadcom 4322 wireless card to a yummy Intel 5300. The system recognized the card as far as lspci and lshw were concerned, but it was disabled. I used "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" to get it active, removed wicd and installed nmanager, and I could access the internet via web browser and mail.
The issue is that other programs (kismet, wireshark, zenmap, anything that I use at my job) do not recognize the new wlan0 interface at all. I've uninstalled completely from synaptic then reinstalled things like wireshark, but under interfaces I get nothing, not even eth0. Nothing looks askew in syslog or the relevant lshw/lspci searches. Does anyone have an idea on this? The Intel 5300 is rolling along without a hiccup so I doubt the issue is there

I have just upgrade to natty from maverick and my usb wifi dongle doesn't want to work. The usb wifi adapter i use is a Thonsom Speedtouch 121g. When using ubuntu 10.10 it work's fine after installing the package linux-firmware-nonfree, but after upgrading to natty it has stop working (the linux-firmware-nonfree package is installed [don't know if is the same version or an upgraded one]).
The network manager doesn't display available wifi nets. The output for lsusb is:

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which had been running Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) perfectly.Today I upgraded it to Natty and the wifi now refuses to work. Details: While no Additional Drivers were needed on 10.10, upon installing Natty it prompted me to install "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver". Now when it's active I don't even have the option 'Enable Wireless' (only Enable Networking). If I disable STA the Enable Wireless option comes back, yet I can't actually search for wifi networks or connect to my saved one. The keyboard key to enable/disable wireless also does nothing.
I can take this laptop to somewhere with an ethernet connection for an afternoon if need be, but am currently stumped as to what to do. Obviously I know this machine can handle Wifi under Ubuntu - it's definitely a Natty problem.

I decided to wing it and upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 once I developed odd wireless issues (grrr) where I could only get on wireless if I booted up Ubuntu with my wifi switch DISABLED and then right away enabled it once I was logged in. The funny part is, it distinctly said 10.10 available in update manager. I get it done, power up, System - About Ubuntu - 11.04.

For the past almost year, once in a while my wifi won't work.At home,I use an ethernet cable. When I go out, or am out of town, about 1/3 times the wifi won't connect, and won't even find access points. Once this happens, no matter how many times I restart, the wifi won't work. The ONLY way I can get it to work again is if I reboot with the ethernet cord plugged into the laptop and into a router/switch/hub. My neighbor (the one who got me into Ubuntu) is a pretty experienced linux network admin who looked a my laptop and has no idea what is causing this. I've attached my syslog log entry for the last time this happened. Does anyone know why this is? I LOVE ubuntu but I may need to switch back to Windows because I NEED wifi to work. You will see in the logfile I tried connecting to two different APs. The one that always works is the second one, called linksys.
