Ubuntu :: Wide Screen Support Vague?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm a windows to linux convert and found ubuntu to be a very friendly system to work with. So far i have been testing different distros and all of them are ubuntu based (linux mint, ubuntu puppy, xubuntu, ubuntu) but as I test them all out, i find something peculiar

I have a wide screen monitor and even the latest driver of s3 pro savage ddr does not even support wide screen on windows. i have tested ubuntu and xubuntu as well as linux mint, all of which dont have wide screen drivers. other forums and question sites say it might be unsupported by the hardware. but when it came to the ubuntu puppy, i found that it had wide screen support. how could this be? is there a generic driver for it? i am totally sure it's wide screen. the circles are circles and not ovals.

I am using Linux 2.6.29-020629-generic #020629 SMP Tue Mar 24 12:03:21 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux ubuntu.

I have a widescreen lcd laptop and the current resolution is set at 1280x768 pls see output of xrandr here for more information [url]

I want to change the resolution to 1024x768. I can do in ubuntu' display tool. The problem is that once I change it, the output does not take up the whole screen it has blank spots on the left and right side

For a better understanding please have a look at [url] and [url]

In open suse the system sets it at 1024x768 without any blanks on the left and right corner. You can have a look at it here [url].

My current xorg.conf is details is at [url].

Please also find my xorg.0.log at [url]

The lcd does not have any controls to tweak.

I have installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS via the command line interface. I installed onto Microsoft Virtual PC on the mac. The installation completed successfully. On first boot, I see the text is spread out very wide on the screen. It's like the screen has been zoomed out greatly.

I assume I have to modify the x11 configuration, but I forget how to do this.

Here is an image of the screen:

I tried installing a more recent version of Ubuntu but ran into other troubles. more on that later.

Fedora :: Extremely Vague Bugs: Where To Report

Jun 30, 2010

I've been running Fedora since core 6, am on 13 now, always with KDE. I upgraded but also did fresh installs.I'm typing, in oo.org, Kile or Kate. Suddenly, without warning, the File menu is selected - mind you, without me clicking the mouse or pressing alt-F or anything. Just typing text.

Or how about this: I'm typing again. All of a sudden the direction changes from the normal left to right to the Hebrew right to left. I think I only pressed ctrl-s to save... Did I?

I can't reproduce any of it, although it seems to be related to Kate based editors and using alt-tab to switch windows. Like the alt key hangs digitally. Is it Linux, Fedora, KDE or Kate? (it can't be the computer, this has happened to me on several distinct machines) Where do I report this, to get a fix?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: WSXGA+ - Shows The Desktop With A 1 Inch Wide Black Area Along The Right Border Of The Screen

Jan 18, 2010

openSUSE 11.2 i586, ASUS P3-P5G43 Rev. R1.04G Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400@3.00GHz, Intel G45/G43 Chipset The Problem: The screen is for the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) standard. This resolution was detected, at the initial install and later with sax2. It shows the desktop with a 1 inch wide black area along the right border of the screen and that is exactly what is missing at the left border (i.e. invisible). It is like the desktop is shifted to the left of the screen. As far as it is visible the image is crisp and clean. Lowering the resolution to 1280x960 works ok, but the aspect ratio is no longer correct. I have checked the archives and found Intel integrated graphics - openSUSE Forums but trying different hints from the thread did not help.

Ubuntu :: No Support To Set Higher Screen Resolution?

May 7, 2010

I have been on Ubuntu for a total of about 1 hour now, as I have finally made the switch from Windows. So far so good, but I do have some learning to do. First off, when I got Ubuntu 10.04 installed, everything worked great! Video lagged a little however. No biggy. The next time I booted up, it asked if I wanted to install video card drivers. I thought this is why my video was lagging, so I said yes. It then automatically installed my nvidia card drivers.

Then when I rebooted, I was greeted with a 640x480 screen resolution. When I go to System->Preferences->Monitors, I am given a warning that says: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics drivers vendor's tool instead?"

Regardless if I hit "yes" or "no" I am brought to windows that should allow me to change resolutions. However, the only resolutions I can choose are 640x480 and 320x240. I know my "monitor" can support higher resolutions as I was running it at higher resolutions before the switch to Ubuntu. (I put monitor in quotes, as I am using a large rear projection T.V. as my monitor). How I can get a higher resolution?

Ubuntu :: Some Apps Don't Like Wide Display?

Apr 29, 2010

I'm running 9.10 with a Radeon X300 video. Two displays, one is 1920x1200, the other is 1600x1200. I'm finding that some apps don't like to be too far to the right (anything past about 2600 x-resolution). If I move a window that far to the right, some of the controls are blank. A good example is OpenOffice. If I move an OO app too far to the right, the text in the main menu items will all be blank. All I see are the icons and the underscores for the keyboard shortcuts. There are other apps that do it, but OpenOffice is the most popular.

I tried re-configuring my displays, and it is always the one on the right. If I stack them top-to-bottom, I don't see the problem. If I reduce resolution, the problem diminishes, until I reduce the total x-resolution to below about 2600.

Fedora Hardware :: Setup Nvidia On Geforce 5700LE - Monitor Doesn't Support Screen Resolution

May 13, 2010

First off, let me say: I'm a long time Linux hobbyist and recently installed Fedora 12. I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.

So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.

Ubuntu :: Running A Command System Wide To Fix RGBA?

Feb 22, 2010

I'm trying to run a command that will let me run some programs. If I run the command in a terminal, then I can launch the programs from it fine, but not from anywhere except that terminal. This is the command that makes things work:Code:export GTK_RGBA_APPS=allbut:exe:checkgmail:swiftfox:firefoxThis command disables RGBA for the programs listed, which seem to have problems with it. I hoped I could use this command to somehow apply it system wide permanently. I've tried adding it /etc/rc.local and rebooting, but it doesn't work.Is there a way of doing this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely? Is there a better way to disable RGBA for certain programs?

Ubuntu :: Changing Monitor Refresh Rate System-wide?

Jan 31, 2011

On an older computer of mine using an older CRT monitor, Ubuntu defaults to a monitor refresh rate that causes the screen to constantly flicker and flash, making it nearly unusable. Changing the rate to either 75 Hz or 60 Hz fixes the issue, but changing it through the Monitor settings only affects my user account; part of the loading screen, and the login screen, will continue to flicker and flash. Is there a setting I can adjust somewhere that will set the refresh rate for the entire system, not just my user account?

Ubuntu :: Play An Audio File With A System-wide Keyboard Shortcut?

Aug 25, 2010

I do a bit of script writing, and part of this involves reading the text aloud and reacting to audio cues. What I'd love to do is set up a method of playing audio files at whim based on a general shortcut. So, say if I pressed <Super>C1, I could play ~/Music/cue1.mp3, <Super>C2 would be ~/Music/cue2.ogg etc.

Currently the closest I've got is using the terminal and a modified .bashrc to play via VLC's ncurses.

Code:
alias cue1="vlc -I ncurses ./Music/cue1.mp3"

Obviously this isn't very near to what I want. Entering a Keyboard Shortcut using the usual methods (xbindkeys, gconf-editor, the KeyShort Preferences GUI) to run

Code:
vlc -I ncurses ./Music/cue1.mp

doesn't play anything. Is it possible to launch these kinds of commands as shortcuts, or am I hoping for too much? My Google trawls have been pretty fruitless. I'm running Lucid, btw.

General :: Invalid Or Incomplete Multibyte Or Wide Character?

May 13, 2011

I'm trying to backup an ext3-formatted disk to an external USB disk, also formatted in ext3.rsync repeatedly reports those kind of errors : rsync: recv_generator: failed to stat "<filename>" : Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character.Following Google, this is usually related to NTFS-formatted drives but it is not the case here.A lead to the solution could be that the folders and files being backuped are mapped through smbd. My smbd.conf file contains the following lines regarding charsets : #Dos charset = 850#Unix charset = ISO8859-1Since those lines are commented out, I believe this defaults to UTF-8.
