Ubuntu :: Wide Black Strip In Firefox Blinks On And Off
Nov 18, 2010
If I click the mouse anywhere inside firefox browser window I get a big black strip and it blink on and off. See screen shot.Screenshot-Navigating and Working in Scribus | Linux Journal - Mozilla Firefox.jpg.I can get it to stop by doing a page reload. But it is very annoying. Has this happen to anyone else? If it has has anyone found a fix for this? While I was typing this it happen again.Screenshot.jpg

I can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

I keep starting up the computer and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and then the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. It ONLY occurs after I log in to wireless network. Using a wired connection, this problem never occurs. How do I stop this and diagnose this?I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, but the same thing occurs! And this was working for months and now is not.

I am having trouble with the grub boot menu. I have a dual boot system, Windows XP 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Windows was preexisting when I installed Ubuntu. The install went fine but when I restarted, the Grub menu gives the option of the Windows boot loader but when I tab to that and press enter the screen goes black and the curser just blinks in the upper left corner...no XP boot. The XP drive is there as I can mount it from Ubuntu side but when I try to boot into it it does not seem to be there. What have I done and what can be done so that I can boot into the XP side?

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

openSUSE 11.2 i586, ASUS P3-P5G43 Rev. R1.04G Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400@3.00GHz, Intel G45/G43 Chipset The Problem: The screen is for the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) standard. This resolution was detected, at the initial install and later with sax2. It shows the desktop with a 1 inch wide black area along the right border of the screen and that is exactly what is missing at the left border (i.e. invisible). It is like the desktop is shifted to the left of the screen. As far as it is visible the image is crisp and clean. Lowering the resolution to 1280x960 works ok, but the aspect ratio is no longer correct. I have checked the archives and found Intel integrated graphics - openSUSE Forums but trying different hints from the thread did not help.

I'm trying to set up firefox system-wide to handle ed2k links properly, I'm following amule wiki howto at this page http://wiki.amule.org/index.php/Ed2k_links_handling but it seems a little outdated, I tried to create /usr/share/firefox/greprefs/all.js and /usr/local/share/firefox/greprefs/all.js but I got no results. I also tried to edit /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.17/greprefs/all.js with no luck. So where should I put ed2k handling strings to apply them system-wide ?

I'm trying to strip down a 9.10 installation, which is destined to sit in the attic and act as a file/download server. Using Webmin (which is the greatest thing I have seen on Ubuntu, it rocks) I notice that the BIND process is using 5MB of memory, on an idle machine. Do I need this installed on a desktop machine ? Can folks suggest anything else I can disable/uninstall for a machine. I'm using neatx to connect to it, and Vuze as a torrent client.

I can't seem to log in with GDM. It shows the username, I click it, type the correct password, at which point it starts logging me in, then screen blinks a couple of times briefly showing the loadng cursor, and I am back at the login prompt, just like that.I don't have a lot of experience with Gnome, and don't even know where to start troubleshooting. It seems GDM doesn't like something when logging me in, aborting on some failure or something like that. Are there any good things I can try?Am on Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10, 32-bit x86, on Thinkpad T43. All worked very well up to this point. I don't recall installing all that much lately.I can log in just fine into the one of the text mode terminals. 'root' can login to desktop, but not me.

Most every time in firefox that I open a pdf, the window comes up completely black. I seem to have been able to resolve the issue temporarily by reinstalling acroread, but then I get a black screen for the next pdf I open. So I wind up reinstalling acroread several times a day to open pdfs.

Has anyone else using Kubuntu 11.04 with Firefox 4 noticed a black background underneath the speech bubble-looking dialogs that come from its top toolbar? Is anyone aware of an existing fix or workaround for this issue? It seems to not be a theme-specific bug (oxygen-gtk, qtcurve, and raleigh are all affected). Does it have anything to do with the black window-resize handle that you have to disable in .gtkrc-2.0-kde4?

On my wife's computer, she is having a problem that I can't duplicate on my own or figure out on hers. When she is logged into facebook, which she uses a fair amount to stay in contact with friends and family, after a certain amount of activity, clicking on links, etc. her screen develops an intermittent black band on the left hand side of the page which makes the page unreadable. This only happens in facebook and only with firefox; no problems so far in Opera or on other web sites. This happened in a previous installation and I thought a clean install would fix it, but I transferred her home directory and that brought the problem with it.

I'm trying to get a minimalCD installation on a flashdrive but the installation never finishes... (i've left the installation runnin overnight for over 12hrs and only 90 percent got completed; whenever trying to retrive packages from the internet the process slows down to a crawl; i've tried ext4, ext3, ext2 and resierfs)normal Desktop insatallation works fine; so I was wondering if there is anyway to strip all the packages off a normal installation to get it to minimal installation, and than start installing the pacakges i need?

I've noticed in Ubuntu that a lot of applications like to make use of the strip of menus that go at the top of the screen; I think it's called a menu strip in Visual Studios.Anyways, the only way I can see it (that I've figured out thus far) is to drag the window to the top of my screen, thus maximizing it, then use the menu, and put it back. What I want is a less... tedious way of accessing those commands, preferably without changing my window position. Is there a trick to it? In windows, unlike Ubuntu, that strip is available regardless of window size; is there a reason it disappears in my Ubuntu?

I have some text based reports in which I would like to strip the "Current Date" from and replace with equivalent number of empty spaces, for every occurrence. For example, here is what I need to strip:
Date: 11/09/09
If I manually run the following SED command, it works great, however I cannot seem to find a way to use the actual "date" command within SED, to get the desired results.
WORKING: sed -i -e 's/Date: 11/09/09/ /' myfile
I've been messing around with various attempts to do this using the "date" command within SED, but I just can seem to get it right. I've also attempted defining variables which call separate "date" commands for day, month, year and inject them via standard variable calling, echoing variable, expanding variable with brackets, etc... Here are a few of the SED command attempts I've tried:
Quote:
sed -i -e 'sate: `date +%D`: :' myfile
sed -i -e "s/Date: `date +%d`/`date +%m`/`date +%y`/ /" myfile
sed -i -e 's/Date: `date +%d`/`date +%m`/`date +%y`/ /' myfile
sed -i -e 's/Date: $(date +%D) / /' myfile
I need to replace it with the equivalent number of spaces, as I'm going to be overlaying a PCL Logo here and need to keep the structure of the rest of the file. Cannot have the remaining portion of the line shifting left.

I downloaded the latest LTS last evening , placed it along side my Win 7 , things went well seemingly until I got the install done and restarted the pc. From the initial purple log in area, the second I curse to the place to put my pw the screen blinks off to the purple screen, devoid of the login section and freezes, taking my mouse control away and then it just sticks. I have restarted quite a few times with the same issue. Is there a known issue about Win7 and the latest LTS concerning the log in screen?
if so, what would I need to do to correct, do I need to jump backwards to an earlier version and wait for the issues to be corrected? Is that even possible?

I am very new to Ubuntu and I need some help. My HP Pavillion WLAN light constantly blinks as it recieves data on the internet and I learned that I have to create and save a file: "sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/wlan.conf" and then paste the following at the end: "#1 means do not blink options iwlcore led_mode=1" but when I try to save it asks me for my sudo password which I don't have and it does not even register any key I press. It just blinks but does not acccept any key. Also how do you save the file in terminal?

When I attempt to boot my computer using the ubuntu 10.04 64 bit live cd the screen lights up briefly about every 2 seconds before blinking off again. The ubuntu booting process is shown just long enough for me to see that it appears to be working besides this display issue. I also had this issue attempting to install kubuntu 10.04.My system currently runs opensuse 11.2, but before that it had mint linux 8 and an older version of ubuntu which both worked fine.Has anyone else experienced this?Any ideas or is ubuntu on my computer a lost cause?

Firefox & MySQL admin have black line borders. The tab, address input box, the search box, the scroll bars, and the dropdown menu area have this black line border. MySQL's admin utility displays the same. Can't figure out where to change it. Also other thread is about Desktop-Settings utility crashes. Should I just do a restore of user install defaults? How would I do that and save some of my desktop custom program icons?

I'm currently using mogrify -strip image.jpg to remove unwanted bytes from images, it was suggested I could remove further data by using jpegran from libjpeg, something like:
jpegtran -copy none -optimize -outfile image.jpg image.jpg
The problem I'm having - if it even is a problem - is that jpegtran doesn't seem to actually do anything that mogrify isn't already doing. In all my testing the filesize just stays the same. If I remove the mogrify part of my code and replace with jpegtran then it seems to perform the same function.
For example:
image without compression: 300k
image with mogrify -strip + jpegtran: 272k
image with mogrify -strip only: 272k
image with jpegtran only: 272k
I was under the impression though that mogrify just removed image profiles/comments and that jpegtran did this as well as losslessly compressing the image to make it smaller. Am I missing something?

Is there any way to change the window scrollbars in 11.04 from the frankly annoying minimalist orange strip to the far more user friendly large bar with clickable arrows top and bottom?
I'm using Ubuntu Classic Desktop...if I really couldn't get on with this scrollbar...would I actually have to go back to the previous OS release?

I have a quirky situation whereby I'm using SED to selectively comment out a line in a crontab job (on Solaris, I know but it's connected to the Linux function I'm working with).
What's happening is this.
Remove hash symbol
Code:
/opt/csw/bin/gsed -i '/^.*/usr/local/scripts/mirror-fix.sh.*/ s/^#//' $TEMPFILE
Restore hash symbol
Code:
/opt/csw/bin/gsed -i '/^.*/usr/local/scripts/mirror-fix.sh.*/ s/^/#/' $TEMPFILE
The problem I'm running into is that the script can sometimes prepend an extra hash # symbol if run more than once (I have a lockfile that I poll for to discourage this, but that's not perfect).
I wonder how I can modify that sed statement to remove any/all leading hash marks up to the first other character, in this case it's a 0 (zero) which is a crontab file.
