Ubuntu :: Why The Output Files (trace File E.g. Out.tr) Are Not Same For The Same Tcl Script
May 27, 2011
when I run a tcl script using ns-2.30 and get a result and run the sam script in ns-2.29 and get an error and run the script file in ns-2.33 and get a result but the output filr (out.tr) is less in size than the output file of ns-2.30 i and also in the details of time scale , for example one out.tr file contains 19000 line (2 M byte size) and the other out.tr file for the same tcl file using the ns-2.33 version contains 10000 lines (1. M byte size) . Does that make since ? also in result file nam file for ns-2.30 it has some drops but the ns-2.33 has no drops! when I run the name !!!. is the time scale for simulation tunable or can be aligned?

i am investigating on solutions to trace a file deletion on a computer( Linux O/S).i also need to determine weither after a file deletion or download on a computer, the computer clock had not been modified. In case a file has been downloaded on a computer and then transferred to a removable device, i need to find out the file activity. i mean i should be able to tell that the file was downloaded and transferred to a device with possible specifications.

The usual answer is debian's ldd(1) and I found broken things due to past lib abuses I previously hadn't understood I'd did - or rather hadn't realized because by looking it "looked ok and worked" - but i had problems. many i fixed.
After I ran a new script: it showed some i'd STILL missed after carefully re-doing /lib by hand (and using /var/lib/dpkg/info/libs.list)
I just made something that might be nice. seems to be the only thing that does it. but its' small and quick and has (tty/stdout) output still.
the had part isn't finding info, objdump(1) does that wonderfully : it's using it..

Does Linux have a way to trace writes to a file?
For each write, I would like to know the time, date, process id, user, file position, byte count, and the data written.
I could use this with a script to replay the writes to a backup of the original file, and reproduce the file contents as they were at a point in time.

I'm working on some scheduled task script files to keep nightly backups of some of our database information in place, and it's a bit annoying when they blow up. I know how to redirect stdout and stderr to a flat file I can view when I come in, and I know that 2>&1 maps them both to the same file (whatever was named in 1). However, I'm running into some cron-time situations where it's easier to have the two streams together, and other cron-time situations where it's easier to have them separated. I can't really tell which is going to happen; is there some way I could create both kinds of output file for my scripts, so that I've got a std_err only file and an interleaved std_out/std_err file?
Note: I've looked at the 'tee' command, but I don't think it will work for what I'm after. 'tee' appears to only work with stdout; I'm trying to work with stderr.

Until now i haven't had to dabble with bash scripts.
I have a program that reads in data files. These are named datafile01_R, datafile01_G, datafile01_B, they then increment, so datafile02_R etc i have about 600 of these. the program reads in 3 data sets at a time from each run, so files_01 r, g, and b.
The program then does its magic, and outputs about 40 different files, depending on the file, they gone to folders named R, G, B, psa, or tracking.
The program itself has configuration files to say where the files should gone when analyzed, there is also the config files that reads in the data sets.
At the moment i have to run one set of data, then go in and manually change the input file location, and run again. But, doing this, even though a different data set, the new set overwrites the old set in one of the output folders. So i need a way to increment the output filenames after they are written and before the program is run again with the new data set.

I am curious if perhaps I am doing something wrong extracting pages from a pdf doc using pdftk and creating a new file. I am only extracting the odd pages from the file and outputting them to a new file that is now only 20 pages instead of the input's 40 pages, yet the new output file is still 1.4Mb in size, the same as the original.
It seems strange to extract only half the pages of a large document and end up with a result that is the same size. how to streamline the resulting pdf's using pdftk?
BTW this is the command I am using, in case perhaps I am missing an option to optimize file size or something:
Code:
pdftk A=ch15.pdf cat A1-40odd output odd.pdf

My employer issues pdf files with everyones work schedules. I copy the content and save it as plain text in a file called unformatted (hope to be able to automate this step someday). Im working on a SED script that reduces unformatted to only display what I want to see and saves the result in a file Iïve named formatted. After that I have to manually copy formatted and save it with that days date as a filename e.g. 2011-02-25 or whatever day is scheduled in the pdf, for use on a mobile device (Nokia N900). I noticed that the date occurs on certain lines in the file so I added a line like:
sed -n 's/^Date: (201[1-9])/([0-1][0-9])/([0-3][0-9]).*/1-2-3/p' < unformatted >theDate
That creates a file theDate with the date in it that I wish to use as the filename for this particular instance. So I would like to skip the file formatted all together and have the sed- script write to a new file using the content of the Date as a filename, but how do I make that happen? And of course it would be more elegant if I could skip the intermediate theDate file as well.

I would like to search for a term within a batch of text files and copy the files containing that term to a folder.
I've read the man pages for Grep, Ack-grep and looked through nautilus, dolphin, midnight commander as well as tried beagle, tracker and google desktop (and looked throught these forums).
I can do this function easily with xp's wagging dog in the Windows search, but would like to find a way in Linux.

im trying to output a list of running processes via a shell script. At the moment i got this which outputs the processes to a text file called out.
echo $(ps aux) >>out
The problem is though, the processes are all just one big block of text which makes it hard to read. Does anyone know how to sort the output to a text file so that it prints to the text file at 1 process per line? I know its probably simple but im very new to linux.
