Networking :: Trace Route On A Specific Port?

Dec 4, 2009

I've got a few systems which forward ports to one another all over the place, and somewhere along the line a port forward fails. I want to trace the route of a connection on a specific port to see where the connection hits a wall, to see what system is causing the problem. I've tried `tracetoure -T -p <port>` but it doesn't output anything about the ports it hits, stops when it hits the address I supplied even though it is forwarded elsewhere, and there doesn't seem to be a verbose mode. interstingly, if I specify a different source port via the '-s' option, the trace keeps hopping to * * * * and never get anywhere (at least to 27 hops then I CTRL+C)

Networking :: Refuses To Connect To The BT Homehub

May 30, 2011

I have linux mint 10 and a bt homwhub 2.0. The wifi dongle that I use is a BT Voyager 1055. Before a week ago I could connect to my bt homehub via linux mint and the bt voyager easily and quickly. But now, however, it seems that Linux Mint refuses to connect to the BT Homehub, the BT Voyager dongle seems to be working because it's green light is on. The Bt homehub is fine because our other windows pc's connect fine (I'm on my windows XP laptop now) but linux will not. On linux it recognises that the dongle is plugged it and picks up various WIFI connections including my BT Homehub, but when I try to connect it to the internet via The homehub, it will not, it try to connect for a minute or so and then a little message comes up saying 'wirless network disconected' any one now what to do ?

Security :: Trace Route From Home Showing Suspicious Hop Just Outside LAN?

Mar 15, 2011

I know this post isn't strictly linux based, but since the system in question appears to be using Linux and I am as well I decided to post this here. In doing other network playing with Ubuntu Sever 10.10 I noticed that on all traceroutes I did to any IP the second hop from my house jumped through a connection on IP 24.96.153.61 which I think should only be another dynamic IP Knology.net customer...

In scanning the IP I now know that its a Juniper Junos Router 9.2R1.10 (Probably running on some VMware based on googling?) Open ports show: 22 ssh openSSH 4.4 v. 1.99 23 telnet Openwall GNU/*/Linux telnetd

At first I thought this was just a legit Knology.net DNS server or something, but using such outdated versions and freeware... I feel suspiciously like this is something else. Also, why in the world would knology allow remote access to their mainframe equipment? Seems that if it were ever breached it would be beyond terrible for the ISP...

Finally, why can't people not SSH into my box from the outside if I have MAC address filtering on? Anyone know anything about this or am I just being paranoid? I'm a noob, so knowing too little about all this is probably more the problem?

Fedora :: Route Line-in Audio For Output To External Speakers

Jan 29, 2010

i'm running fedora 12 on a dell dimension 4600. audio seems to work reasonably well for things like flash animation but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to route line-in audio through the system for output to my external speakers. on the sound preferences application on the gnome desktop: if i select the hardware tab and analog stereo input is selected, then i go to the input tab and have analog line-in selected, i see the v-u meter above moving around as though there is actually an input. [list]

but, i hear no sound. the output tab shows "dummy output" with no other choices. to get audio working for videos and other flash sites, i have to change to hardware->analog surround 5.0 output. such documentation as i have been able to find doesn't seem to describe my setup well, and in any case, i find all this fidgeting with hardware configurations an immense step back from the old alsa software. if this is going to be the future of linux audio, can i say, please, no?

when I run a tcl script using ns-2.30 and get a result and run the sam script in ns-2.29 and get an error and run the script file in ns-2.33 and get a result but the output filr (out.tr) is less in size than the output file of ns-2.30 i and also in the details of time scale , for example one out.tr file contains 19000 line (2 M byte size) and the other out.tr file for the same tcl file using the ns-2.33 version contains 10000 lines (1. M byte size) . Does that make since ? also in result file nam file for ns-2.30 it has some drops but the ns-2.33 has no drops! when I run the name !!!. is the time scale for simulation tunable or can be aligned?

General :: No Connection With Wireless BT Homehub?

Apr 12, 2011

I have just dual booted a friends Vista PC with fedora core 14. Unfortunately he needs a wireless connection to the internet vi a BT homehub 2.

I had thought this should just work straight off!

Can anyone give me a pointer to a step by step guide to do this (on FC14 preferably).

On Vista, I can get info using "ipconfig /all" at command line that gives stuff like default gateway, dhcp server, and so on. It's talking to the hub via a REALTEK8187B wireless USB (802.11g)

I suppose I have to add the hub via sys->Pref->Network_Connections->Wireless->Add.

If so, where do I ger the info to put in?

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Networks And Unable To Configure Network

Jul 27, 2010

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.

Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network

However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.

Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Server - Getting "No Route To Host?

All I want is to be able to access files on one Ubuntu computer from another Ubuntu computer via a home wireless network. I have been at this for a week now. Scouring the web for answers and so far I have come up with this: Port 22 is open. I have both computers IP addr's via right clicking on the network icon-> Connection Information. ssh is installed and running. Both computers are listening on port22. But when I try Places->Connect to server, I get "no route to host". I'm not a networking guru and I'm at a complete loss on this.

Networking :: Route Eth2 TCP Packets To Tun0 With IPTABLES And IP RULE/ROUTE?

May 8, 2011

I have 3 network interfaces on my Linux Router :

Interface - Gateway - Type

Code:

br0 - 192.168.0.1 - Internet
eth2 - 192.168.1.1 - LAN
tun0 - 10.0.0.2 - VPN (via br0)

What I'd like to do is to route all TCP packets coming from eth2 to tun0 where a VPN client is running on 10.0.0.2. If I delete all default routes and if I add a new route to tun0 like :

Code:

route del default
route add default gw 10.0.0.2

Everything is fine, and everyone on eth2 can reach the Internet using the VPN access. Now the problem is that my VPN client does not allow any other protocols other than TCP. And I also want to allow VPN access only to eth2, no other LAN nor the router itself. use iptables to filter any TCP packets and mark them, so they can be sent to tun0, while any other packets can reach the Internet via br0 (192.168.0.1). I found on the Internet that we can mark packets before they get routed. Using the following commands :

Code:

iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -j MARK --set-mark 85 -i eth2 -p tcp --dport 80
ip route add table 300 default via 10.0.0.2 dev tun0
ip rule add fwmark 0x55 table 300

First of all, --dport 80 never work... :/ I wanted to filter TCP 80 packets coming from eth2, but none of them seems to be HTTP packets... oO (very strange...). Nevermind, I decided to forget about the --dport option. I use the "iptables -L -v -t mangle" command to see how many packets are marked, and it is working fine, all TCP packets coming from eth2 are marked. Now the problem is that none of them are routed to tun0 they are all respecting the "route -n" rules... and not the "table 300" rule I have created.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Dissapearing Without A Trace

Jul 26, 2011

I'm trying to install Fedora as part of a tri-boot system on my desktop machine. This machine has been running Windows 7 since launch and now I've decided to free up some space on my primary HDD to test out both Gnome 3 (I've used Gnome 2.32 and earlier before and it wasn't for me) and KDE to see which of these desktops suit me better and whether they can effectively replace my Windows install. With Ubuntu going the way of Unity, I decided that Fedora was the choice for me.I proceeded to setup a Fedora live USB using UNetBootin and booted it up, and followed the install instructions, ensuring to set Windows as the default boot option as it is to remain my primary install. I set up my primary Fedora partition with 100000MB, my swap partition with 2410MB and a 1GB boot partition (leaving me with around another 100GB of unpartitioned space for a future KDE install). This, I hoped, would allow me to see the lovely GRUB splashscreen defaulted to Windows, and if I wanted to try out Fedora I could simply change the option by scrolling down, similar (but reversed) from my dual boot debian/vista laptop.

However, upon booting up the system I was greeted with only the standard boot I had previously had before the Fedora install, with no hint that any change had occurred. I have confirmed that the Fedora install does exist however via the Disk Management tool on Windows. Can someone please help me in getting a GRUB boot/splash screen so that I can boot the Linux partition if I want?

Fedora Installation :: Nvidia Driver Causes Stack Trace On Service Start

Apr 4, 2009

Just installed a Sparkle GeForce 8400 GS on my Dell Dimension 2350 running FC9. As stated, every time the system goes to start the card, a stack trace occurs. I know the first thing that everyone will ask for is the output from the stack trace, but for the life of me I can't capture it. Tried grabbing the STDOUT and SDTERR from the 'service start' command, but nothing interesting is ever there. If anyone knows if and where such things get stored, just letting me know that would help. I assumed there would be something in /var/log, but no. For some reason, there's a lot of python errors in the output. I imagine I could try to type in as much of the output as possible, but I'm hoping someone has seen this before.

Anyway, I've tried the Nvidia install executable, the nvidia-newest RPMs, the nvidia-96xx RPMs and they all fail the same way. I also can't get the card to come up as the primary device on boot, which I don't think should be a problem since they all boot into VGA mode, don't they? If I disable the internal video setup in the BIOS, the machine freezes on bootup with blinking lights on the keyboard, which I imagine is the BIOS's way of telling me there's no monitor available.

I also tried getting the nv and nouveau drivers going with no luck. They are installed on the machine, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't know how to get them configured. Not really a driver guy, I guess. Also, the reason I installed this card is to get TVOUT, and I don't know if generic drivers will have support for that sort of thing.

At this point, I'm just looking for a way forward. One thing I remember is that when I removed the 'fglrx' drivers (because they conflicted with the NVIDIA stuff) I remember that a few python/fglrx based packages went with it. I'm wondering if that could be at the root of the failure, given the python errors in the stack trace.

Fedora :: Unable To Connect To The Internet?

Oct 15, 2010

Just installed Fedora 13 (64-bit). Brand new to Linux and not much of a computer expert.

As the subject line says, I am unable to connect to the Internet.

Things that I have already tried based on threads posted for similar problems:

* ping -c 5 www.google.com
unknown host www.google.com
* ping -c 5 74.125.159.105
Network is unreachable

I connect to the Internet via wired ethernet. The modem/gateway is 2Wire mod. 2701HG-B. Service provider is AT&T DSL. Ethernet controller is Realtek Semiconductor RTL8111/81688 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet. When I go to System -> Administration -> Network Device Control it shows eth0 as inactive.

Network Configuration shows:

* Hostname: localhost.localdomain
* Primary/Secondary/Tertiary DNS: blank
* DNS Search Path: blank

I have no problem whatsoever connecting to the Internet when using Windows XP.

Fedora :: Unable To Connect To The Internet

Jul 20, 2011

I've been using 3 different distros for the last 2 weeks. Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint. And i've been using Windows since I can remember. I won't talk here about the benefits I got with Linux, because everyone knows that. But there's something about Linux that keeps annoying me, no offence to Linux users, and I want to ask you about that.

It just seems impossible to install additional software without an Internet connection. I tried: Keryx, Opyum, Suhi,huh?, Synaptics generate download script, yum -downloadonly. I didn't yet: Debian 10DVD I'm not programmer, and my knowledge about computers and operative systems is very small. But installing software on Windows the worst case of dependencies i saw was I had to download just one more .exe file (.NET framework or klite codec pack installers, for example).

question: Is there any Linux distro or any way where packages are managed in a more compact fashion? Suppose I want to use Wine, how I download some megapackage with ALL dependencies or something like that? How system administrators manage where no Internet connection at all (if that possible)?
