Ubuntu :: Why Does Root Own All Files
Jun 14, 2010
I was trying to extract a tar file to my home directory. The operation failed because I didn't have permission! I did an ls -Al and discovered that all my folders and files are owned by root, and the group is plugdev.
I am a member of the plugdev group, and (ducking for cover) a member of the root group. Nevertheless, I seem not to have the necessary permissions on various folders and groups. I even went so far as to sudo chown individual files, directories, and directory trees. Using the -v switch, chown reports changing all the files. But, entering ls -Al, shows nothing was actually changed. I don't see in the new release notes that this is a new behaviour. On the other hand, I often miss the obvious.

When i installed ubuntu. I made a seperate partition so that i could copy an ISO image onto it of an up-to-date version of ubuntu. I wanted to then boot the ISO up so i could install the version that way.I've already tried doing it through the update manager but it'll download, almost be done with installing and it freezes on me. so i figured this would be easier. However i do not know how to gain access to the other partition to copy the ISO image.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.
Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.

I want to mount my FAT32 partition automatically on startup. It gets mounted but the problem is that all the files in the FAT32 partition are shown as owned by root. Because of that I can't paste files or write to this partition. This is my fstab file
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation

I have a Netbook Remix install on an SD card that won't boot. Grub2 in the recovery mode shows it fails finding the root files by using UUID. It's my first Grub2 install and I'm not sure how to go about debugging it. The machine boots the same version from a USB stick.

I'm trying to mount some CIFS shares (NetApp) to my Ubuntu 11.04 desktop (64-bit).I am mounting it as a domain user with admin rights and full control over the share.ter mounting it as root, all the files are owned by root and I can't modify them from my non-root user.Here is how I am mounting the share:
mount -t cifs -o domain=example,username=example-user,password=mypassword //myfiler.example.com/myshare$/mydir /mnt/myshare/
This share is a qtree under a volume with security type set to NTFS. (Although I have also tried security type = Mixed) We don't configure user-level access to shares on the filer, we create directories and lay down permissions on those from the Windows side. (Although I have tried explicitly adding my domain user to the access list for the share)

I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.
I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.
I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).
I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.
I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line

I'm a new Ubuntu user and a Python programmer, it's the first time that I use Python in Ubuntu so it's a bit confusing me. If I want to save a Module or something in a specified map, I get 'Errno 13', it says that I don't have permission to edit, do thing in that map. And this is also for importing files with Python. I logged in from Terminal with 'sudo -i' and closed Terminal, but the problem keeps repeating. How do I login as Admin or Root and stay as Admin or Root? I need right to edit/read files as well as root and normal user.
An example:
Python file:
test.py ->
test = open('/a.txt', 'w')
test.write('Test - Test - Test')
test.close
When I execute this, I get in the Python IDLE the 'Errno 13' problem and below the 'Errno 13' it says that I don't have permission. Who know how to stay logged in as root, even if the user has not logged in or isn't this possible, if it isn't then I just want to get files moving, editing/erasing etc.

what if the root user by mistakenly stops/starts any service and tried to remove those traces from the log files and save those log files. Then how can we ensure that our log file is trusted. Is there any way where even the root(superuser) also cant edit/modify the contents of the /var/log/* files.

So let's say I entered some dir in MC as a regular user and there is a file with very long name which is not convenient to spell and I want to edit it with nano as root. In this directory I type in a command "sudo nano [name]" and autocompletion doesn't work because the TAB key is for another purpose in MC. Can I insert a name of selected file without typing it in MC?
