Server :: Debian Apache2 Rewriting Subdirectory To Root Breaks Accessing Cgi Scripts

May 25, 2010

OS: Debian 5.0.4
Server: Apache2

I've used mod_rewrite to rewrite my apache2 root (my.server.com/) to point to /var/www/drupal6/ instead of /var/www/. I also have a script installed in my cgi-bin (/usr/lib/cgi-bin) but since the rewrite I can't seem to access it. When I go to my.server.come/cgi-bin/test.pl, I get a page not found from my drupal.

Is there a way I can access my cgi-bin without resorting to accessing my drupal through my.server.com/drupal6/?

Background: I have installed drupal CMS which has a base address of my.server.com/drupal6/ as it resided in /var/www/drupal6/. However I wanted users to be able to access it as my.server.com/ so I added the following into my httpd.conf

Code:
NameVirtualHost *:80
<Directory /var/www/drupal6>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

Debian :: Default Ownership Of Folders And Files - Should Own By A User Without Root Permissions

Feb 12, 2011

Being new to Linux, i've just about got used to the Debian setup procedure now, but had a quick question on the default ownership of files and folders. On my default Debian installation, almost all the folders and files are owned by root:root. Is this the correct advised configuration or should the folders and files be owned by a user without root permissions - eg user:user?

Ubuntu PC is going to have a USB drive with lots of movies. iMac will run ps3mediaserver and hoping to play the files in the USB drive. Well, why don't I just attach the USB drive to iMac? Where is the fun in it? My old PC has a built in TV tuner card, so eventually I want to use that as PVR and play them on using ps3mediaserver.

Ubuntu :: Restrict A Certain Program From Accessing Certain Files

Everytime I start Rhythmbox it starts to scan my USB HardDrive (which contains 50,000+ files) for media. I searched around, and it seems that there is nothing one can do stop that using any Rhythmbox options, switches, etc. Is there a way to prevent a process (in this case Rhythmbox)from using a certain resource (the path to my USB Drive)? I'm thinking APPArmor or SELinux may be the way to do it.

Ubuntu :: Accessing Files In Virtual Image?

Jan 22, 2011

I have an issue with a PC (XP pro)that had a virus which deleted all the files in the windows/system32/config folder. I first attempted to do the second repair option on the XP cd and it wasn't available. So unable to boot to windows and run an anti-virus; I put the hard drive in my external enclosure. Plugged it into my ubuntu laptop and removed the virus infected files using Clam. I then tried using the XP cd in the first repair to copy the files only to get an access denied msg.

I would like to just copy necessary data from the drive with XP pro installed and then reinstall XP and give the PC back to the owners. However the person that did the original install used a volume license cd and I unfortunately have no more CD keys and hate using cracks in certain business environments. So I came up with good idea at the time to setup XP pro in virtual box and then copy the files from there however those files are in use when the machine is running and can't be copied. So is there anyway to mount the Virtual hard drive and copy the files while the virtual machine is off?

It would be extremely difficult for me to transfer all of these files over if i don't know whether or not it will hang.

Debian :: Enabling Autologin In LXDE Not Working

Nov 30, 2015

I'm running Debian + LXDE in a VirtualBox. Here are the details:

Code: Select all➜  ~  hostnamectl
   Static hostname: debian64
         Icon name: computer-vm
           Chassis: vm
        Machine ID: #############################
           Boot ID: ###########################
    Virtualization: kvm
  Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid
            Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64
      Architecture: x86-64

I really would like to jump into my desktop environment when I start my machine without the need to enter my user name and password. Apparently this is very easy to do. I added the following lines to my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Code: Select allpam-service=lightdm
pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user=username
autologin-user-timeout=0
session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession

And also added my user to the autologin group

Code: Select allgroupadd -r autologin
gpasswd -a username autologin

As you can imagine, it didn't work. Otherwise I wouldn't be here... I also tried to install Slim and enable autologin adding the following line to the /etc/slim.conf

Code: Select allauto_login = yes

That didn't work either!

Am I missing anything? Enabling autologin in LXDE?
