General :: Gain Root Acess Over Files / Folders In Ubuntu?
Nov 30, 2010
Right now by default iam logged in with my account and i want to access some files/folders in my machine, but iam unable to access(also no copy/paste) those because iam not logged in as root user. So is there a way to gain root access over those files/folders in Ubuntu. I know i can do su in command prompt and change the permissions but what is the other way to gain root access.

When i installed ubuntu. I made a seperate partition so that i could copy an ISO image onto it of an up-to-date version of ubuntu. I wanted to then boot the ISO up so i could install the new version that way. I've already tried doing it through the update manager but it'll download, almost be done with installing and it freezes on me. so i figured this would be easier. However i do not know how to gain access to the other partition to copy the ISO image. Please help.

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.
Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 32bit on my laptop. I am trying to learn the command line and also install software via the command line. I type in su and hit enter it asks me for my password and I type that in. The password fails, why is this? I am the one who set this up and installed the OS. Now I am logged in using my normal user account when doing this from the GUI

Being new to Linux, i've just about got used to the Debian setup procedure now, but had a quick question on the default ownership of files and folders. On my default Debian installation, almost all the folders and files are owned by root:root. Is this the correct advised configuration or should the folders and files be owned by a user without root permissions - eg user:user?

I just upgraded to Fedora 12 on my computer. Now I can't connect to the net. Under network I show the two connections (neither working). The "connect" and "disconnect" AND the "delete" buttons are all grayed out (?). I also can't log in as root to try to gain more access. Probably just a new way of doing things. I was upgrading from F7 so it was a bit of a jump.
Does the network utility work differently from 7? Am I now rootless? It would seem that my wifi card sees the net as I can see the routers out there, but can't connect. I'm sure I'm using the correct WEP.

I am trying to install the Epson Stylus SX115 printer/scanner.
I have downloaded the driver since opensuse11.2 couldn't auto install it. I log in as root and execute the installer but it cant create files or folders. Example(dont know how to copy from the pips window):
Install pips-snx110_3.7.0-2_i386.deb. ()
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/EPAva/printer/snx110/uninstall-snx110.sh': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/usr/bla bla bla
bla bla bla bla
Startup ekpd-tool...
installation is complete... (yeah right^^)

Linux kernel 2.6, slackware 12.0
KDE 3.5.7
I have some directories whose owner is root. When I enter the GUI (KDE) I always do it as normal user john. But then, when I want to copy a file to some of root's dirs, I get an "Access denied" notification. To be sincere, these dirs are in a window$ vfat partition and I can neither change the ownership nor the permissions. So what I do is to switch to a root console and painstakingly type the whole path of both source and destination, with the help, of course, of tab completion. To su to root, copy the file and exit to john would be much more comfortable. But I don't know how to do it. If I do K Menu>Run Command and type 'su root' nothing happens.

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

I have a fresh Arch Linux install and one of the first things i did was inastall X.Org and Pekwm. I boot into runlevel 5 with Xdm. The problem is once X is running I can no longer acess terminals via CTL-MOD-FN(1-7). I am not using a graphics card so I doubt that its a driver issue and have the same result after I boot into runlevel 3 and use Startx. The only thing on the screen if I try to change tty's is a mesage from my monitor saying "Frequency Out of Range"

I have a directory (let's say A) with a few hundred files and subdirectories and a copy of this directory (let's say B). All the files and subdirectories in B have a newer date than A. However only a few of them are really changed files. Is there a way to find those files and directories? Basically they have different sizes so this could be used to compare them with the files from A.

I use the following command to find files which are older than 60 days:
find /myfolder/* -mtime +60 > /myfolder/file.list
Now I want to find out the file size of all files contained in file.list in summary using the du command:
less /myfolder/file.list | xargs du -sh The du command prints the file sizes of every single file but not the summary and this is actually what I want.

Is there any Linux application for finding the folders with the most number of files? baobab sorts folders by their total size, I'm looking for a tool that lists folders by the total number of files in it.
The reason I'm looking is because copying tens of thousands of small files is excruciatingly slow (much slower than copying a few large files of the same size), so I want to archive or delete those folders with high file counts that that will be slowing down the copying (it won't speed things up now, but it would be faster when I need to move/copy it again in the future).
