Software :: Open Files In MC As Root Without Typing In Their Names?
Jul 6, 2011
So let's say I entered some dir in MC as a regular user and there is a file with very long name which is not convenient to spell and I want to edit it with nano as root. In this directory I type in a command "sudo nano [name]" and autocompletion doesn't work because the TAB key is for another purpose in MC. Can I insert a name of selected file without typing it in MC?

I'm trying to run a script that needs root privileges without typing in the password. I want to copy a file from my documents folder into /etc/X11 to overwrite my xorg.conf. I do this because I will have my computer switch from my monitors to my TV when I watch a movie. But I'd like to be able to make it a clickable icon so I don't have to type in cp /... /etc/...
This is my "script"
Code:
sudo cp /home/nertskull/Documents/xorg.conf_TV /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then I read a lot of places that said to add this to the sudoers file (sudo visudo)
Code:
nertskull ALL = NOPASSWD: /home/nertskull/Documents/switch_TV.sh
I've done all that, and I still get asked for my password when I run that file.
nertskull ALL = ...
%nertskull ALL = ...
%users ALL = ...
%admin ALL = ...
I'm sure it's something simple I'm overlooking, but I've read 5 different threads on this, and I can't find anything they did that I'm not doing. Also, here is my sudoers file, because I know location within the file matters. But what I read said I should be putting my stuff at the end.
Code:
# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
[code]....

The "find by typing" feature in Unity, as far as it concerns files and folders, is rather limited. Is there a way to specifically add a directory to the places where this feature is looking? (where is it looking anyway? most of my documents don't show up, even in my "home" directory...

how the file is generated or what it contains is not important at this point. The important question is how to prevent the file from being downloaded and its contents from being displayed in the browser window?Since it is not recognized by the web browser so it is downloaded on the system. That way, what the script does is exposed to the outside world.Okay, I usually keep such scripts in../cgi-bin/. But for files (text files, in the example) which are being uploaded by a user should not be downloaded by another user.

I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password? To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal, which then asks for the password. What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.
I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.

I work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

I have a centOS 5 server running apache 2 with it's web root at /var/www/html. By setting up a dns entry to point to the computer's IP, I was able to go to testing.myservername.com and reach the contents of that directory. My question is, how can I go about mapping multiple future domain names to folders that are under this webroot? For example how would i bind www.temporarydomain.com to the /var/www/html/temporarydomain/ folder and also be able to map www.anotherdomain.com to /var/www/html/anotherdomain/?

I was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running, figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.

We have a digital signage appliance built on SUSE 11.3 with a LAMP server that uses the flashplayer application to play a .swf file from localhost. It is a AOpen GP7A mini pc that has the nVidia drivers loaded. We have lots of customers that have been running the exact same system for over 6 months (we image the drive for each sale).
For some reason, my last customer is seeing the following problem shown below, and this linux configuration is way over my head. Everything else is working (local LAMP server is working, communicating with our production servers to get information works, etc). I have verified that it is screen 0 that is running (at least it shows with Ctrl-Alt-F7). I thought that it may have occurred because of updating the software with zypper up. I had the customer rebuild from the image being careful not to upgrade the software. The result was the same. The pc is a newer version compared to my bench pc, but there are multiple other customers running that same version just fine. So I am not sure if it is
The command is issued by a php script that is run in a root cron job. As I said, it works great on all other customer pc's including my bench system. I also tried to execute the command on a ssh terminal as the root user with the same result. I also upgraded my bench pc and it still worked properly.
The command being executed is sudo env DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/home/svision/.Xauthority flashplayer http://localhost/flash/sign.swf &
the result (when run in terminal) is: No protocol specified (flashplayer:15077): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

I am trying to write a loop to open four main-data-files. At each open of the main-data-file, I want the loop to open another four sub-files and split the data from the mail-data-file according to the creteria and dump into the four files. When the loop goes to the second main-data-file, it shall generate another 4 sub-files with different file name. And the process goes on. That means I will have total of 16 sub files for the four main-data-files. Each four files from the 16 files shall have specific name on it. Based on the code which I given below, I would say when the file at UNIT=100 is opened, 4 new files needed to be opened as well. They are:
maximum_dist_001_064.dat
maximum_dist_065_128.dat
maximum_dist_129_192.dat
maximum_dist_193_256.dat

*I'm using Ubuntu 10.10
My issue is I can't handle the files with spaces in their name, I've donde the below script to print each file found inside folder and subbfolders with "find".
I would like to "ls" to each file found with its complete path and with its basename too.
Code:
files=$(find . -type f)
for each in "$files"
do
ls -l "$each" # 1rst option I've tried to list with full path
ls -l "$(/bin/echo "$each")" # 2nd option I've tried to list with full path
ls -l "$(/bin/echo $(basename "$each"))" # 1nd option I've tried to list with it basename
[Code].....
How can I list "ls -l" in both cases (with full path and with basename) when there are files with spaces in their name?

has anyone used some software tool for copying a file from one location to another (I mean local files - for example from one folder to another), which prompts if you already have this file, or a similar one...I'm going to use it for my file archive ... mostly for my MP3For example, I might have the folder /home/user/MP3/Heavy Metal/Old/Downloaded/Metallicabut have forgotten that I already have Metallica in this folder and now I want to copy my new music collection to my archive folder which contains for example this folder:MP3/Rock/MetAllicA-Full-DiscographyI need copy files software which will tell me:"You already have folder with similar name to 'MetAllicA-Full-Discography' called 'Metallica', do you want to skip this folder, or copy it to location 'MP3/Heavy Metal/Old/Downloaded/'?"This way I will reduce the file redundancy in my file archive, or at least will keep similar items close to each other ..

Im trying to compare two files and I only want to display the user names that are in the first file and not the second.
So I have one file named final.txt (which contains every user name and only the user names in a list no other information)
Then I have another file Over1.txt (which only contains certain users that have different permissions This file is also setup differently with the user name and some information about the user after the user name.
I need a way to compare final.txt to over1.txt so that I will only display the names that are in final.txt but not Over1.txt
Ive tried using diff and comm but just cant seem to get it two work correctly. Im not sure if im missing a option or what.

I am using CentOS 5.5 64 bit.
My work requires me to have a lot of postscript files. Hence i have elaborate names for easy identification. For example --- AP-1_Jul-Ctrl-noEqSA_bg25C_precip,U250-150_xy.ps. I am unable to open them using evince. I get a blank evince screen with loading written on it. The same file named as 1.ps opens in a jiffy. As of now evince quickly opens pdf files with long names. But i would not like to convert ps to pdf.
Even kghostview does not open these long-named files.

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu
Then a call trace...This is a brand new install of Maverick I copied my files onto a USB and did a fresh install on the whole drive using the alternate CD (the desktop and netbook editions both failed to read on my system) was previously using Karmic with no issues. I tried to e2fsck the dev/sda1 from the CD in "repair broken system" mode but the return was "clean" I read that as the file system being intact but this is an area that I have no real knowledge in.
