Is it possible for two computers to access the same program from 1 system at the same time using remote x apps? In other words can a system have two instances of a program running and being utilized by two different computers remotely?
For example lets say I install Program X on Computer 1. I ssh into Computer 1 from Computer 2 and use remote x apps to use Program X. Is it possible for Computer 3 to ssh into Computer 1 and use Program X at the same time using it for a completely different task?
Is there any application out there for linux that can notify me of when a new IP address connects or disconnects to my network?

It has problems completing a traceroute when another machine on the same VM Host can do everything just fine. One of our best networking technicians diagnosed it as issues with the TCP/IP stack on the OS.
I know that iptables is off, allowing all trafffic incoming/outgoing.
downgrading PPP, NetworkManger, and NetworkManager-gnome. This worked but is there an easy way to know when it is safe to apply the updates that are available?

View 3 Replies View RelatedConsider that symbolic links at times can be broken. The target reference can be lost or misplaced. As such, usage of a symbolic link becomes deterred or broken. I propose the following: Symbolic links from now on carry a checksum relating to the original file they are linked to. The original file will carry a property that checks if it has been changed. This property will figure out the new checksum, reconfigure the symbolic link, and continue the symbolic link. Furthermore, if the system were to change, there would exist the possibility of have a symblink-comparison feature that allows the user to check the entire filesystem for files that meet the checksum criteria so that symbolic links can once more be re-established.

Is this possible using USB ports? Would I need a 2nd video card for the monitor?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just bought a 6-core Phenom with 16G of RAM. I use it primarily for compiling and video encoding (and occassional web/db). I'm finding all activities get disk-bound and I just can't keep all 6 cores fed. I'm buying an SSD raid to sit between the HDD and tmpfs. I want to setup a "layered" filesystem where reads are cached on tmpfs but writes safely go through to the SSD. I want files (or blocks) that haven't been read lately on the SSD to then be written back to a HDD using a compressed FS or block layer.
So basically reads:
- Check tmpfs
- Check SSD
- Check HD
And writes: - Straight to SSD (for safety), then tmpfs (for speed) And periodically, or when space gets low: - Move least frequently accessed files down one layer. I've seen a few projects of interest. CacheFS, cachefsd, bcache seem pretty close but I'm having trouble determining which are practical. bcache seems a little risky (early adoption), cachefs seems tied to specific network filesystems. There are "union" projects unionfs and aufs that let you mount filesystems over each other (USB device over a DVD usually) but both are distributed as a patch and I get the impression this sort of "transparent" mounting was going to become a kernel feature rather than a FS.
I know the kernel has a built-in disk cache but it doesn't seem to work well with compiling. I see a 20x speed improvement when I move my source files to tmpfs. I think it's because the standard buffers are dedicated to a specific process and compiling creates and destroys thousands of processes during a build (just guessing there). It looks like I really want those files precached.....
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point. Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. The main computer will have to stay XP. I cannot get my wifes computer to connect to the main system, although mine connects just fine. I dont know what the problem is. Her computer sees the network, but when trying to connect, it times out and says unable to connect.

I manage this system fully via SSH, but there is one thing that I don't know how to do, or know if it is even possible. I would like to start XBMC from my laptop so that I don't have to reboot the machine in order to do that (XBMC launches upon boot). Is it even possible to launch a GUI on a remote computer using SSH, and if so, how?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.
Example:
10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3
Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?
I have ubuntu server installed on a pc. The motherboard died, so I switched the HD to another computer. Everything is fine except the network. View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a way I can install a windows program to webspace and run it from a linux client computer? To specify, I'm a student at the University of Minnesota. I have access to linux machines running Ubuntu, however, the space allocated to us is too small for the program I would like to run on these computers. I do have webspace I can use though. The thing I'd like to be running on the linux computers is a windows application requiring installation. So is there a way to put/install/(whatever else it might be called) this program onto my webspace and be able to run it from the linux computers? I know it's probably unlikely, but maybe?
