Ubuntu Servers :: Setup The Necessary Public/private Keys To Use In FileZilla?

Jan 26, 2010

I installed OpenSSH via tasksel and am using Webmin for administration. I'd like to be able to SSH externally and want to setup the necessary public/private keys to use in FileZilla. In Webmin, under Servers > SSH Server I can click 'Host Keys' and see an RSA key. Is this the public or private key for my server? Do I need to copy this into a text file to import it into FileZilla on my remote PC (that I want to connect from)? Is that all that needs to be done (aside from opening the port on my router/firewall)? Or, is there an automated way to set this up via Webmin?

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 - SSH Connections Using Public / Private Keys Rejected

Aug 10, 2010

My ISP has for a long time had a broken forward/reverese DNS so that my ADSL connection with static IP address resolves to a completely different IP address on a reverse query. This has not been a problem until I upgraded a remote server from 10.3 to 11.3 last weekend and now ssh connections from my ADSL connection to it using public/private keys are being rejected with the following message in /var/log/messages (IP addresses changed):
Aug 10 12:00:32 penguin1 sshd[1270]: Address 83.175.246.243 maps to 83-175-246-243.static.dsl.aupex.com, but this does not map back to the address - Possible Break in Attempt!

But if I log in interactively with username & password, the connection succeeds. I've changed the StrictModes setting in sshd_config to 'no' but this hasn't resolved the problem. Obviously something in 11.3 is being stricter about this IP mismatch than it was in 10.2 (and no, the server is not using a firewall). There must be something I can change to make sshd more permissive? I've tried before to get my ISP to fix their problem but no luck. This needs to be sorted as a server at my home (which does not run SuSE) retrieves backups from the remote OpenSuSE 11.3 server every night using scp and these are now failing.

Ubuntu :: Use Openssl Public And Private Keys So Only A Host With The Public Key Could Access / Decrypt The Filesharing

Aug 2, 2011

I'm trying to write a p2p file sharing program using python's built-in libraries. Everything is going well. The only thing is that i'd like to be able to use openssl public and private keys so only a host with the public key could access/decrypt the filesharing. I've gotten these libraries (httplib, basehttpserver, ssl, os) to work using just a pem file containing both the public and private keys but no success with them seperately. Can someone point me in the right direction or offer an alternative? PS, the goal of the project is to create an anonymous, decentralized, secure file sharing program. I want to be able to upload this to sourceforge so everyone can use it, if that's any incentive

Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

Ubuntu :: How To Backup 'Private Directory'

Apr 13, 2011

After an upgrade gone wrong my 9.10/10.4 is unbootable and I see no way to fix it.

I can't mount the directory now (LiveCD or chroot), it probably has something to do with the breakage and/or pre-existing ecryptfs issues, as I have both login and mount passphrases.

And it's all on one partition too, so before reinstalling I have to back up. How can I back up the encrypted directory? And can I transplant it to a fresh Ubuntu installation?

cp complains about symlinks, returning 'not permitted', is this normal?

ETA: Now that I look at it from LiveCD .ecryptfs and Private appear as broken symlinks (what do they link to anyway??), but when I tried to copy them while chrooting, they were both accessible directories (though still couldn't mount or copy) - I don't get it.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A 2nd Ftp Account For Own Private Use

Jan 12, 2010

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.

My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

Can I get pointed to:

1. The right place to post this question (if this is incorrect).

2. Assuming this is the right place to ask and a guide exists, a link to the guide to set this up correctly.

3. If there exists no guide, a place where I can start/put a guide.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Private Data - Desktop ?

Jan 7, 2011

Since recently I have installed windows (dont worry I will be back to ubuntu soon enough but I've ran into some trouble), I had installed windows on my main hard disk (I couldn't install windows on my 2nd hard disk for some reason).

There were 2 partitions on the main hard disk, 1 which had all my data and another which had all the system fyles for ubuntu on it I believe.

Now I deleted the small system fyle partition and installed windows over it thinking I'd have all my data on the other partition when I needed.

But when I started up ubuntu with a live USB (I had made it prior to deinstalling ubuntu because I wanted to go back asap) and browsed my files, I noticed that I couldn't get to my private data anymore!

The /home/user partition is still there but it only has a file in it which says something like "recover-private-data.desktop" but when I double click it (made it executable) it just pops up a terminal real fast and disappears.
