General :: Permissions On Private Key In .ssh Folder?

Nov 26, 2010

I changed my permissions in my .ssh folder and now when I use a piece of software that uses my private key, I have to type my password each time. What should my permissions be on my id_rsa file to not have to type a password each time I use an app that uses it?

Currently my permissions are set to:

-rw------- 1 Jody staff 1743 Oct 21 2009 id_rsa
-rw-------@ 1 Jody staff 397 Oct 21 2009 id_rsa.pub

Ubuntu :: Others Users Can't Browse Private Home Folder

May 19, 2010

I used the command sudo chmod 0750 /home/Gianni to make my home folder private. Now, I would like that another user in my pc can read files in a subdirectory of my home. I was running several commands with chmod and chown and I tried with Nautilus too, but without success. I just would like to place a link on the second user's desktop, that he can click on and access my subdirectory.

Ubuntu :: Making Private Folder Appear With Ecryptfs-utils

May 7, 2011

I have a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.04 and I already have the lastest ecryptfs-utils installed. I have the ".Private" folder but not the "Private" folder.

When I try to set it up I get this error:

Quote:

$ ecryptfs-setup-private
ERROR: wrapped-passphrase file already exists, use --force to overwrite.

How do I get my "Private" folder to appear? I don't think I should just be throwing my stuff into ".Private" and I don't want to have to see all the hidden folders all the time either. Should I use the --force argument, and what would that do?

Ubuntu Security :: Create Private GPG Key Server?

Jan 25, 2011

One of my clients is considering implementing GPG or a similar technology to encrypt internal emails. (They have a different system in place already for external mail.) I've done some reading on the subject but can't seem to find any information about how one might set up a keyserver. All the discussions I've seen so far talk about uploading the public keys to a server like keyserverDoes anyone know what software packages might be used to set up our own private keyserver on a Linux machine?

Security :: Convert One's Private Key To Id_rsa?

Apr 17, 2011

Some people have said that it's dumb to use the same key for multiple things, but for curiosity's sake, is it possible to convert one's private key to id_rsa? I know that I can convert my public key to id_rsa.pub with ``$ gpgkey2ssh [key ID] >id_rsa.pub'', and that makes me think that there should be a way to do it with my private key.

Ubuntu Security :: UNABLE - Access Private Data Desktop

Oct 12, 2010

I have a seperate partition for my "/home" folder. Whenever I install a new distro I format my "/" folder.

This way I was able to access my old home data files since I install using a different username. Everything worked fine until last Sunday.

10.10, unlike other versions of ubuntu, has encrypted my old username in my home folder.

Then using this document [url]

I was able to mount my hard drive again. But all the file and folder names are like this.

Btw I don't remember selecting an option to encrypt my old home directory in the first place, what is this ?

Ubuntu Security :: Creating PPK File Using Puttygen - Private Key Not Loading

Oct 12, 2010

I am trying to use puttygen to create a ppk file that I can use with putty. I try to import the private key and it gives me the error: Couldn't load private key (ciphers other than DES-EDE3-CBC not supported). Now I obviously know this is telling me that I have the wrong cipher, but what what do I do to use the correct one? Here are the instructions that I used to create the keys.

Also, when I open the key this is the top:
- BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY -
Proc-Type: 4,ENCRYPTED
DEK-Info: AES-128-CBC
and then some other stuff that I don't think I should share. But the weird thing (to me atleast) is that it lists CBC right at the top there which is what puttygen wants. Why won't it accept it?

Ubuntu :: Home Page In Firefox Shows Private Files - Can't Change It

Jul 1, 2010

I have xfce on my machine, running lucid lynx. For some weird reason, I can't change my firefox home page. I've changed it to the same one time and again in preferences, but every time I open firefox, it shows all the files in my home directory, including hidden ones. I uncheck the "show hidden files box", change it again in "preferences", but it still does this. And the home page in "preferences" is set to the right page I want; firefox just won't go there when I start it up. I really don't want my home directory in plain view like that; how do I make firefox recognize my settings?

Ubuntu :: How To Backup 'Private Directory'

Apr 13, 2011

After an upgrade gone wrong my 9.10/10.4 is unbootable and I see no way to fix it.

I can't mount the directory now (LiveCD or chroot), it probably has something to do with the breakage and/or pre-existing ecryptfs issues, as I have both login and mount passphrases.

And it's all on one partition too, so before reinstalling I have to back up. How can I back up the encrypted directory? And can I transplant it to a fresh Ubuntu installation?

cp complains about symlinks, returning 'not permitted', is this normal?

ETA: Now that I look at it from LiveCD .ecryptfs and Private appear as broken symlinks (what do they link to anyway??), but when I tried to copy them while chrooting, they were both accessible directories (though still couldn't mount or copy) - I don't get it.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A 2nd Ftp Account For Own Private Use

Jan 12, 2010

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.

My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

We are already building the .deb files and now would like to create a (couple ?) of environments to separate out development/testing/staging and production work.

Can I get pointed to:

1. The right place to post this question (if this is incorrect).

2. Assuming this is the right place to ask and a guide exists, a link to the guide to set this up correctly.

3. If there exists no guide, a place where I can start/put a guide.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Private Data - Desktop ?

Jan 7, 2011

Since recently I have installed windows (dont worry I will be back to ubuntu soon enough but I've ran into some trouble), I had installed windows on my main hard disk (I couldn't install windows on my 2nd hard disk for some reason).

There were 2 partitions on the main hard disk, 1 which had all my data and another which had all the system fyles for ubuntu on it I believe.

Now I deleted the small system fyle partition and installed windows over it thinking I'd have all my data on the other partition when I needed.

But when I started up ubuntu with a live USB (I had made it prior to deinstalling ubuntu because I wanted to go back asap) and browsed my files, I noticed that I couldn't get to my private data anymore!

The /home/user partition is still there but it only has a file in it which says something like "recover-private-data.desktop" but when I double click it (made it executable) it just pops up a terminal real fast and disappears.
