Ubuntu :: .html Files Opening In Elinks Instead Of Firefox
Aug 5, 2010
I install a nautilus plug-in which in turn installed the elinks browser and now all of my .html files are opening in elinks instead of firefox so how do I get .htm/.html and other web type files to open in firefox instead of elinks.
I also tried removing elinks from my system but then the files just open in gedit so again how do I associate .html (and other web files) with firefox.
BTW firefox is already set as my default browser in System > Prefs > Prefered Applications > Web Browser

I'm having a weird problem while uploading a file using a standard html form in Firefox 3.6.8(No extensions, except for the preloaded ones : Ubuntu Firefox modifications 0.9Rc2, mouse gesture redox 3.0.2 ). Anytime I try to upload a file whether on my localhost or at a website that offers a form with an input file, it fails. I'm just using test files, like small images. I've reinstalled my firefox, because I got this problem since 9.10 and now that I've upgraded to Lucid Lynx, I still have this issue. That's why I decided to do a fresh re-install using the same package I've downloaded previously when I did the ugprade. However, I still have the same result, the file never uploads to the server.
This happens when I use a simple html form with enctype="multipart/form-data". Though, when I use any other browser, like chrome, chromium, opera they just work fine. At my localhost, this is my code in one page, if you want to take a look, but as I say even with other websites the problem is happening too. Btw, the temp folders have written permissions (777)
PHP Code:
error_reporting(E_ALL);
ini_set('display_errors','On');
$currentDir = dirname(__FILE__);
[code]...

I've been getting annoyed with the way that Firefox opens files for me. I used to have it so that they would come up with a window that asked whether I wished to save files onto the hard drive or simply open them. When choosing to Save, they would go to my Desktop. Because I mainly save files from my Uni website, they are generally .pdf files. N for some reason, they open in the Firefox window, so then I have to go to File, Save, then choose where I want to save it. It would be more efficient if it worked the way it did originally. How can I get the settings back to the way they were? I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0.19. Because I use a shared computer, I'm not sure whether the version of Firefox has been changed.

I can't get Firefox to open Opendoc files in the correct program.
I'm using Gnome 2.32 (or 1.4.2? I'm not sure) and KDE 4.6.1 and in both instances whenever I download an ODT and right-click to "Open" it in the Downloads window, Firefox opens up "python /usr/bin/ebook-viewer (filename)".
I already went into mimeTypes.rdf and deleted the entire reference to odt, and I also went into dolphin, konqueror and nautilus to make sure it opens into Libre Office.
What else do I need to do to make Firefox open ODT files in the application I desire?

Today, all of a sudden, gmail is loading only the html view in my firefox. It is asking me to upgrade to a faster browser in order to have the standard view. Clicking on that link, I found that my firefox is already the latest version. It is not only gmail, but my institution mail is also loading in basic html mode. There is no problem with yahoo mail though.
The one thing that I did yesterday was installing many ubuntu themes and wallpapers. I changed the theme back to the old one but to no avail. Of course, the wallpaper is new, but that should not be causing any problem. I tried clearing the cache and deleting the cookies from google. But the problem persists i.e I closed all the google related tabs, cleared cookies and cache and restarted the browser. Note that Google chrome is able to load gmail properly.

I'm playing a game using wine that uses an internet browser style menu. One of the options that the game offers is to open the current game page with your external browser. I've used it hundreds of times when I was on windows and it worked fine and I was able to save the current page to a folder. Now that I'm using fedora the link doesnt work. It doesnt open firefox and it doesnt give me any message to let me know that it even recieved the request.

I have fedora 12 and I'm playing a game using wine. To view a page from inside the games own browser(it has an internet browser style menu) there is a button that says "open in external browser" I've used it hundreds of times to save that particular page to a folder when I was in windows but now that I'm using fedora it doesnt do anything. Is this something I have to configure in firefox or could it be something else.

I recently upgraded from FC12 to FC14 due to errors using yum and rpm. I keep running into mirror sites with RPM files that don't install. These site have what appear to be valid RPM files, but if I use wget to retrieve the file and run "file" on it, it turns out to be an HTML file. I understand the fact that if a file is corrupted, it won't install, but I can open these "RPM" files using Mozilla after changing the extension from RPM to HTML. When I open the new HTML file, I'm prompted by the browser to open or save the RPM file. If I save the RPM file pointed to by the HTML file, I can download and install it using rpm -ivvh unless a dependency check fails. how does anyone install using yum if the package is an HTML file with an RPM extension. Here is a link as an example:
[URL]
If I use wget on this file and then run "file" on it, here is the output:
file openoffice.org-calc-core-3.3.0-20.2.fc14.i686.rpm
openoffice.org-calc-core-3.3.0-20.2.fc14.i686.rpm: HTML document text
If I change the extension of this file to HTML and open it with my browser, I am prompted to download the RPM file which turns out to be a true RPM v3.0 file. Is anyone else having this problem or can anyone point me in the right direction to download the correct RPM file. I am running behind a proxy server and have installed cntlm, configured wgetrc, yum.conf and .curlrc to use the proxy server. I am able to download and install most of the simpler applications where the dependencies are either installed or non required.

I like to alias my firefox commands so I can open up mutiple pages at once. This works great. firefox [URL]
But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"

I have been having trouble getting Thunderbird to open links within my emails. When a link is clicked there is no response at all. I am running firefox version 3.6.2 and Thunderbird 3.0.3. After surfing the interweb and the forums I have tried setting the default browser through Firefox itself and through the preferred applications GUI in Ubuntu with no luck. I have gone into the about:config for Thunderbird and added the following lines:
network.protocol-handler.app.http /usr/bin/firefox
network.protocol-handler.app.https /usr/bin/firefox

I am using the latest version of ubuntu(10.04 LTS) Desktop edition 32Bit. My problem is, after I open the firefox browser for first time after booting, a chain of new firefox windows start opening one after the another. In a matter of few minutes, there are like 15-20 instances of the browser opened.
I reinstalled the OS, but it is happening again and again. Is there some flaw in OS, something related to OS not compatible with my computer or some problem with the keyboard where some key(combination) is in a "press" mode (however, I dont see that happening on Laptop, the keyboard looks fine, plus Windows XP is working just fine).
This problem is forcing me to spend a larger time on Windows (which is bit cringy, after you get used to Ubuntu!).
Specs: 1Gb Ram, Centrino Duo, 1.88 GHz

I started using 11.04 awhile ago, and switched from Unity to Classic because I didn't like switching from the mouse to the keyboard that frequently to open applications. I noticed that Firefox had stopped using the setting of opening my homepage when I started Firefox and have been trying to figure out why. It turns out yesterday I think I figured it out. There is an add-on for Unity Menus installed, once I disabled that the behavior returned to normal. Hopefully, someone else here will find that useful.

I cannot read html in emails or in Firefox.It was working fine until I tried to modify the message composition settings in the Preferences menu.I was trying to make it so that I could forward messages in HTML to send to a colleague his flight itinerary.I had set all my messages to be composed in plain text by default with Enigmail.A Google search page for example will only show images but no text is rendered. I can see the blue underlines for links.
If I highlight the webpage and copy it to the Notepad, I can read the text. So the issue isn't that the pages aren't loading, but they are not displaying correctly.The same problem is also now present in my email.Please help! I don't know what to do short of reinstalling Ubuntu and I would rather not.I am on version 9.10 if that helps.

My setup is two laptops connected by crossover cable. One runs Windows xp the other Fedora 13. Neither is connected to internet. I'm using a subnet of 192.168.1.x On Fedora eth0 is up, apache runs because it creates pidfile. Everything pings fine. Windows xp ip pings fine from command line. Gave Windows xp a static ip of 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 1.2, same as eth0. xp says it sees the server. eth0 is up.
DirectoryIndex looks at index.html. I created that file with very simple code and put it in document root. Document root permissions are 755. Access_log 770. Error_log 644. Apache User 755. Listen 80 When I type the ip for eth0 (192.168.1.2) into firefox, firefox gives me an error message - can't find server. The connection status says its connected.
The error log includes a line: [warn]./mod_dnssd.c:No services found to register I don't know what this means. Apache is not writing to access_log. When I cat the path to access_log I get nothing, then a command prompt. I'm looking for the part I'm missing that will let Apache serve that index.html file to firefox so I can see how my code looks to firefox as I go.

It's a few days now that I notice everytime I save a page in Firefox, only the .html file is saves, and firefox does not make a folder associated with the page in which it saves the images, etc..Could this be because I installed TOR and the TORBUTTON for firefox?I have, however disabled the TORBUTTON addon from Firefox, and restarted the browserbut the problem persists.

I have a strange problem with my browser(s), even Epiphany....when I go to my music site [URL] then log in, go to my page and click on link to play a song the browser Crashes. It never did this before and I dont know what I could have done to cause this. It only does this on this website. Could it be that they use a Quicktime plugin to play the music? I don't know cause I used to be able to play music on there before. It doesnt do this on my Reverbnation site page, just Icompositions. If I click on the icon to restart browser a box comes up saying "we're sorry"...your browser crashed for no apparent reason.....and offers a choice to either reload the page (that repeatedly crashes) or start new session. It isn't a big deal but this never used to happen before. Could it be some bad code on that website?

When I click on a link in say Evolution, in workspace 1, the page will open in an open Firefox in a different workspace, say 7, but a item will appear on the panel of my current workspace. When I click that item I will be moved to the workspace 7. I find this very confusing.I would prefer the behaviour to be, if there isn't a Firefox in the current workspace to start one and use that rather than reuse one in a different one.

I am trying to use Firefox to open a *.csv file from a download button on a Web page. The download button would open a dialog that offers me to choose to either open the file with Open Office Calc or save the file. I would like to open it on the fly. But an error comes up that reads:
Code:
/tmp/HIST1031-4.csv could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
The helper application in Firefox's Edit > Preferences is Open Office Calc. I checked in /usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/, and found the script for scalc.

i used to be able to watch music videos from a local radio station website using firefox and mplayer with fc11. maybe the solution is to upgrade to fc12, since it seems to work fine on the pc with fc12, but maybe the problem is something easy to fix, and i can wait awhile before getting everything up on fc12.. -( also, with fc11, i can play the same videos using a newly installed version of google chrome. i am just trying to find out what causes this type of error and how i can fix it. if i go to www.kzsn.com and select the "on demand" tab, then select a video, i should see mplayer open up and the video play - i don't get the black box and no video, no sound.. as stated above, this works fine using google chrome, or using another pc with fc12. this website also has some videos that play via flashplayer. they also did not play in fc11 with firefox, but i was recently able to get them to work by downgrading to a previous version of shockwave (found that in another post). not sure if this has anything to do with the problem i am having, but thought i would mention it, just in case.. only other thing i can't seem to do with any release of fc (maybe linux in general) is watch movie trailers from the apple website (which used to work fine) - was wondering if anyone else can with fc11 or fc12?

I'm trying to set up some basic websites on an Apache 2 server running on my Linux box. At the moment, I have some really basic html files that I want to load into the /var/www directory. However, for whatever reason, I cannot save my html files. First, I thought it was because I didn't have permission on my account, so I switched to localadmin (i don't know if all Linux distros come with a localadmin account, but i know localadmin has "higher" permissions than, but less that root, of course). Even as localadmin, I could not save my html files!

I just downloaded libgtk2.0-doc at the gtkmm docs to help me with some programming. I've found where the libgtk2.0 documents are (/usr/share/gtk-doc/html) and I'm not for sure where the gtkmm docs are.
My question is: what is an easy way to view all of these HTML files? I know on Ruby you can run gem-server and you can see all of your RDocs from localhost on your browser. Is there an equivalent to that on Ubuntu for gtk-doc?

I installed firefox 3.6 from the firefox-stable ppa repository and I noticed that the location bar autocomplete stops working after opening an external link (e.g. clicking a link in evolution or empathy). The problem still occurs when starting firefox in safemode, so it doesn't appear to be related to a misbehaving extension. The problem is only fixed with a browser restart or when I open and then close 'show all history'.
