View 5 RepliesI have made some custom launchers on my Xfce panel and was wondering where their .desktop file was located. I checked /usr/share/applications but they were not there.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.
I am trying to setup nfs to mount the drives located on my desktop, to my laptop, so I can watch them on my laptop rather then my desktop. I have both nfs server running on both the desktop and laptop. Desktop is running Arch Linux and the laptop is running Ubuntu, I keep getting this error claiming that the devices dont exist. I restarted all the services on both machines and tried editing my fstab/exports on both machines also but still nothing seems to be working.
Here is my nfs restart log from my laptop [URL]
And now desktop [URL]
Here is the export/fstab from my desktop [URL]
Now for my laptop export/fstab [URL]
There rather the same, but just wanted to include both for each machine just in case there is a distinct difference in something I did.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my Laptop, I installed Debian under the file "/" and the partition on which I have all my files under "/var". While this isn't really a big issue, when I originally installed Debian, I had the intention of having all of my files on a partition that I would auto-mount later so that when I upgrade my system by reinstalling it, I would only have to change the system partition and let everything else stay the same.. I can live without changing my /var if I can only do so by a re-install...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded slackware disk 1 to 3 via torrent.Now I have 3 nice .rar files which I have uncompressed, and these two accompanying each:slackware-13.1-install.iso.ascslackware-13.1-install.iso.md5I'm running Windows XP, and have nero.The two above files appear to be image files but nero doesn't think so, and I can neither find any other image file to make my install boot cd.I read the other stickied forum topic "So you wan to be a slacker..." which seems to say I should be on the look out for these files:
cdromiso.iso
cdromiso.md5
lets say I have a project that have generated lots of xml files. Though all these xml files point to a location with the text name TEXT15. I want to change all the files that containts TEXT15 and change it to TEXT16. This actually works for files in a folder but not recursively in all the entire files....perl -pi -c 's/TEXT15/TEXT16/g' ./* but I have many subfolders and within this more subsub folders....i just want to do this recursively.

I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).
How can I access files of my Windows desktop from Ubuntu desktop while using Ubuntu?
View 3 Replies View Relateda server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was just playing around with the Unity plugin (adjusting opacity) and now the files on my desktop aren't there (yes i know that those files are in the desktop folder) but they don't show on the desktop. also, when I right click on the desktop, nothing happens. it all changed when I played with the Unity plugin by adjusting opacity... I really liked having files on my desktop and being able to change my background by right clicking...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been playing with my desktop and I've found that I prefer Nimbus Sans L to Arial for my default desktop font. Was going to put it on my "shared" folder so that other people in the house (not all running Linux) could try it if they liked. I can't find it! It doesn't appear to be in usr/share/fonts as you would expect. (I did find the other font that I wanted to share, Inconsolata...) However Nimbus Sans L does appear in the font selection menus for gnome, Oo.o, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. Is there a way to find where the .ttf is located so that I can share it? It does appear to be properly installed, as it is distinct from the other Helvetica-like fonts that I have.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am working with Ubuntu for the first time since school and it was an intro class. I am trying to setup a file server for part of a school project. I installed x11vnc and am trying to set the password. However everywhere I look says the file would be located at ~/.vnc/passwd. However when I ls from the home directory .vnc does not exist. When I type out vncpasswd ~/.vnc/passwd I get returned a message The program 'vncpasswd' can be found in the following packages:
* tightvncserver
* vnc4server
how I can get this setup? Am I using old information that is no longer accurate or am i messing this up somewhere?
