Jun 4, 2010Where can I find a list of changes/fixes after a regular Ubuntu update has already been installed? Are the changes/fixes recorded somewhere within the system?

Debian Configuration :: Laptop Files Located In /var - Can Change This
Jun 7, 2011On my Laptop, I installed Debian under the file "/" and the partition on which I have all my files under "/var". While this isn't really a big issue, when I originally installed Debian, I had the intention of having all of my files on a partition that I would auto-mount later so that when I upgrade my system by reinstalling it, I would only have to change the system partition and let everything else stay the same.. I can live without changing my /var if I can only do so by a re-install...

Jul 22, 2011lets say I have a project that have generated lots of xml files. Though all these xml files point to a location with the text name TEXT15. I want to change all the files that containts TEXT15 and change it to TEXT16. This actually works for files in a folder but not recursively in all the entire files....perl -pi -c 's/TEXT15/TEXT16/g' ./* but I have many subfolders and within this more subsub folders....i just want to do this recursively.

Mar 24, 2011For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

May 9, 2011I am working with Ubuntu for the first time since school and it was an intro class. I am trying to setup a file server for part of a school project. I installed x11vnc and am trying to set the password. However everywhere I look says the file would be located at ~/.vnc/passwd. However when I ls from the home directory .vnc does not exist. When I type out vncpasswd ~/.vnc/passwd I get returned a message The program 'vncpasswd' can be found in the following packages:
* tightvncserver
* vnc4server
how I can get this setup? Am I using old information that is no longer accurate or am i messing this up somewhere?
Ubuntu Installation :: Network Printer Installs But Then Can't Be Located?
Sep 14, 2010On a new installation of Ubuntu Lucid I can install a network printer by getting the Printer utility to search the network to find it. The Printer utility then proceeds to install the driver. However when I try to print the test page I get an error saying that it can't locate the printer. The printer is not new, and all other computers on the network (all Ubuntu Lucid) can print to it.

Jul 19, 2010I read a few threads about updating packages in opensuse 11.3, and about switching to a repository, but I still don't understand a few things. On earlier versions of opensuse I was used to set the repository priorities in an order that was convenient for me, and when I did an update, the vendor changed if needed.
Now, vendor change is not allowed by default, and I don't understand the right way to handle repositories, and updates. I found out that in Software Managment there is an option to allow vendor change, but I'm not sure that's the right way.

Mar 7, 2011I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.

Dec 20, 2010I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?
Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Installation Keeps Crashing On Updates?
Nov 14, 2010I'm very new to Linux and Ubuntu (about 2 days) and am having a hard time getting Ubuntu to work. I'm not completely sure that I'm posting in the right forum since I have several issues. I can't tell what's causing what.
I'm using the wubi installer for version 10.10 (i386 - 32 bit). I have an AMD 64-bit, but the wubi installer for that only crashes when I try to boot it the very first time. I get a blank screen and my tower is silent. Version 10.04 does the same. Version 10.10 is the only one that gets me somewhere.
So, I installed ndiswrapper and the proper driver for my USB adapter. Now I have 2 main problems:
1). the most relevant to this board is that when I use the update manager to get all 135 updates, I'm prompted to reboot to complete the installation. When I do that, i get the same blank screen and silent tower treatment. Oddly enough however, when I went back to windows, uninstalled ubuntu, then reinstalled it again using wubi, the update manager said that I already updated an hour ago (!?!?.. I assume it's still reading the old files from the previous install attempt). Unfortunately I messed it up anyway trying to fix my second problem...
2). my internet connection fails here and there. I don't know if it's ndiswrapper or the driver or what. Once it fails, it won't reconnect. I have to go into ndiswrapper, delete the current driver and reinstall it. This has happened to me while on the internet (scouring these forums) and while downloading the updates and whenever it feels like it.
Also, the system does freeze up on me here and there as well. Sometimes when I'm using ndiswrapper. Sometimes when I'm authenticating myself. Sometimes in update manager and sometimes in synaptic. Right now it's working. But I haven't updated yet and I'm afraid to try.

Mar 24, 2011I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on

Jan 29, 2011There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Mar 25, 2011So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.
Fedora Installation :: Get F14 Updates As Part Of A Kickstart Installation
Apr 5, 2011I'd like to write a kickstart file that installs available Fedora 14 updates as part of the installation process, much as if I was doing a standard Fedora 14 installation and had enabled the 'updates' repo.
So my question is, is there an easy way to do this? I don't want to have to go down the route of downloading all updated packages and maintaining my own update repo (or indeed, creating a repo with the dependencies listed above).

Jun 20, 2010I have been playing with my desktop and I've found that I prefer Nimbus Sans L to Arial for my default desktop font. Was going to put it on my "shared" folder so that other people in the house (not all running Linux) could try it if they liked. I can't find it! It doesn't appear to be in usr/share/fonts as you would expect. (I did find the other font that I wanted to share, Inconsolata...) However Nimbus Sans L does appear in the font selection menus for gnome, Oo.o, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. Is there a way to find where the .ttf is located so that I can share it? It does appear to be properly installed, as it is distinct from the other Helvetica-like fonts that I have.
