Ubuntu :: Blank Screen After A Sudo Apt-get Dist-upgrade / Sort It?

Jan 18, 2011

The only thing I remember being updated is xserver, but I know there were other packages updated.

After the splash screen, a text login is shown. If I do nothing, it goes right to a black screen, but first there are weird red pixels randomly strewn about the screen. If I quickly login via the text screen, it then goes to the same black screen. Either way, there are the weird red pixels and a few flashes of the screen before going black.

This happens 100% of the time.

I have tried:
booting with recovery mode and selecting repair packages (no packages are broken, missing, etc.)
booting with recovery mode and selecting startx with failsafe (same black screen)
booting with older kernels (same thing)

Ubuntu :: Commands - Sudo Kill -9 -1 - Screen Became Blank - Keyboard Not Responding

Jul 11, 2011

I am learning linux commands. I just wanted to see what happens when I type

Code:

The screen became blank. Keyboard was not responding. I couldn't do a proper shutdown. I switched off computer by pulling out the plug. When I restarted, I heard a series of beeps (approximately 10 beeps). Then I was dropped to the grub prompt. The problem now is I can not type anything into the grub prompt, because the character 'c' is continously printed across the screen like this:

Code:

I couldn't stop the character 'c' from printing (I tried pressing Esc, Ctrl+C)

The solution is easy. I can reinstall grub from a livecd. Or even reinstalling the entire operating system wouldn't take more than 30 minutes. But I want to know:

1) What exactly happened to grub? What stage does this error belong to (1, 1.5 or 2)? What is the error number?

2) How can running "sudo kill -9 -1" affect grub?

Other than nuking the system and re-installing 10.10 any constructive idea?

Ubuntu :: Foobar2000 Giving A Blank Screen After Upgrade?

Dec 22, 2010

Ubuntu 10.10 32 Bit
Wine 1.3.9

Alright so this happens to me after every time wine updates from the wine PPA. Foobar2000 works fine till Wine updates, after it updates it pops up a full sized window and instead of it looking like it should it.... looks like whatever was on the screen when the window opens. It's non functional. I tried using the portable version of wine this time and the same thing happens after a update. This is... sad for me because I use it for transcoding.

Bellow is what was spat at me when I ran it thru a terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen After Upgrade Restart

Jan 22, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 8.04.x system. I ran the update manager to upgrade to 10.04.1 LTS. Everything seemed to run fine up to the point where it needed a restart. Upon restart, it spews out a stream of log messages, changes the font of the log messages already displayed, and then the screen goes blank and the system does not respond to keyboard or mouse. It appears as if the system is trying to set up the monitor and messes up.

If I ESC into grub after BIOS boot, I have the option of booting two different kernels: 2.6.32-27-generic and 2.6.24-28-generic. The original ubuntu 8.04 kernel was 2.6.24-24-generic(though I did do some updates might that be the 24-28 kernel?).

Booting the 32-27 kernel results in the behavior described above.

Booting the 24-28 kernel produces a stream of log messages that scroll past to fast to read and drops into ash. One of the last messages is: !ALERT /dev/disk/by-uuid/ xxxxxx does not exist -which is true because there is very little in the /dev directory.

OpenSUSE Install :: Blank Screen After 11.3->11.4 Upgrade?

Apr 3, 2011

I just tried to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 Using iso on DVD. All went well until the stage where the screen says something like "rebooting from installed system" when the screen just went blank. After removal of the DVD and re-start of the system, selecting the normal Desktop from the boot menu just returns me to the blank screen. I never see a login screen.

Selecting Failsafe caused what appeared to be a complete normal sequence with a Login that worked and I ended up in KDE4 (my usual desktop) with everything apparently working, even WIFI. But the next time I re-booted and selected Failsafe I just got a command prompt. I now find that selecting Failsafe alternates between the GUI and a command prompt on each attempt!

Red Hat / Fedora :: Upgrade Seems Okay - Blank Screen After Reboot

Feb 11, 2011

I tried to upgrade Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade. The upgrade seem to go OK, I didn't see any errors. But when it did the final reboot all I get is a blank screen. I rebooted in single user mode and saw that /etc/rc5.d/S99local -> ../rc.local is the last script executed. I edited rc.local and added 'echo "got here"' at the end and rebooted. It did print "got here" so I know all scripts were executed for init 5, it didn't get hung anywhere along the bootup. Why I'm not getting the login screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen / Errors Trying To Upgrade ATI Catalyst Drivers

Jan 29, 2010

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.

I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

I don't know if this is a new video driver failure (its a pretty old laptop, theres no need for new drivers) or if its a grub problem. Since I can't get to a grub it goes BIOS>Purple 10.4>nothing and I don't get a terminal login, the laptop is now considered bricked. However I was okay with the install and was wondering if theres a way to fix it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Blank Screen After Upgrade From 11.2 To 11.3 (NVIDIA FX3800)

Jul 16, 2010

I have just performed an upgrade from OpenSUSE 11.2 to 11.3. My Machine is a Lenovo W701DS laptop which uses an NVIDIA FX3800M graphics card. The system was working fine under 11.2 before the upgrade.

After upgrading to 11.3 the splash screen after GRUB comes up for about 1 second before the screen goes blank. After about 5 mins I am able to SSH to the Laptop and access the system. Doing this I created an xorg file using "X -configure" and copied the new file to the /etc/X11 directory and renamed to xorg.conf.

If I SSH to the laptop change run levels to init 3 then init 5 the Gnome comes up and I have graphics the system works However I am unable to access the text consoles using alt+f1, f2 etc. If I restart the system it is back to the blank screen.

I have attempted to install the NVIDIA drivers however the installation fails due to an error with gcc or kernel source versions. Error log reports that the kernel was complied using a different version of gcc.

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting Blank/black Screen After Performing Upgrade From 11.2

Sep 8, 2010

During the upgrade process, all the files appeared to install correctly and the computer rebooted as expected. It then showed the openSUSE splash screen but eventually that went dark and there was no display. Rebooting again did not help. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 results in a corrupted display. I'm guessing this is an issue with the video driver? Not sure how to troubleshoot when I can't even get a terminal window open!

Ubuntu Installation :: Sticky: Graphics Resolution - Upgrade / Blank Screen After Reboot

I have tried the tips, and to the best of my ability understand the later posts from the sticky post "Graphics Resolution" however I seem to keep reverting back to the blank screen. I did this:

5. Type "sudo reboot".

The above only works for some but not all, depending on what card you have and whether it actually is supported by additional drivers (proprietary). All at the moment, mostl seem to need "nomodeset radeon mode=X", where x= 0 or 1... Some ATI cards are not working with the current natty kernel, but are working with the older 2.6.37 kernel or the proposed 2.6,38.9 kerne (please see post 2)l Sometimes (rarely) it'll work but more often it won't, and in the two times it's worked I haven't known how to get it to remember the setting permanently- keep in mind I have no idea what that last paragraph about x= 0 or 1 means.

I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To FC13 - Initial Boot Failed - Just Blank Screen

Sep 19, 2010

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.

I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.

At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.

The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel
