Ubuntu :: When Login With "root" And Run Any Command - See Load Errors For Libraries ?
Jun 16, 2010
I have ubuntu 9.04 on my Virtual Machine and my host OS is Win.XP, I've installed SSH on my linux and and now, I use PuTTY on Win.XP to connect to the SSH on linux,
Now, I have a problem: When I login with "root" and run any command, I see load errors for libraries such below:
Code:
I've defined a user in ubuntu and when I login with it, I have no problem in running commands!
Also, when I use "su" command in the user's session and go to the root, I have no problem again in running commands! Is it related to my linux version or distro?

My computer won't load the login. How do I load the root of the computer to bypass this freeze? How do I force it to give me the login screen? It only displays the computer's name and ubuntu's version 10.10. There are no links at the bottom to follow.

I have a Linux machine which I set up for my personal use at home. I installed Fedora Core 11 a long time ago, and recently I noticed that I am not able to log in as root (I didn't realize this issue until recently since I always have been logging in as a user account that I created during the FC11 installation). When I login as a user account instead of root, I can use the su command with the password I set up for the root account. Even when I'm in GUI mode and try to make changes to the system from the user account, the GUI asks to enter the root password, and I type the password I set for root and it works. However, if I boot the machine and try to log in the system as root, password that I set up is rejected.
I'm very puzzled with this problem because with my limited knowledge on Linux system, I thought the root password and the su password are the same (i.e. when you install Linux OS, you set the root password, and you use the same password for using the su command). I do not know exactly when this problem started, but the only thing that I can think of as a cause of this issue is that I once changed the root password from GUI using System > Administration > Root password since the system one time complained about the low security strength of the root password.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31 and gcc 4.4.1. I began getting the following errors from gcc after installing bison, g++ and g++-multilib and also after compiling 2.6.34-rc3 as a test. I've tried removing the packages but the error still shows up.

It seems to occur for every C header file.

I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server. What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.

I am trying to install makemkv [URL]. I tried to install makemkv and I used the first command to install the tools and libraries. Sudo apt-get install build-essential
libc6-dev
libssl-dev
libgl1-mesa-dev
libqt4-dev
I then try to use:
make -f makefile.linux
sudo make -f makefile.linux install
And I get:
kevin@kevin-desktop:~$ make -f makefile.linux
make: makefile.linux: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target 'makefile.linux'. Stop.
kevin@kevin-desktop:~$ sudo make -f makefile.linux install
I dl both files and extracted them in the download folder with the tar files.

Here is the Xsession-errors log (it's a hidden file in your home folder). It mentions:

I have two servers. One in production (lets call it the OLD ONE) and the other (lets call it the NEW ONE) in tests to replace the OLD ONE.This is the basic hardware of each one: (I can post more detailed info if you need, but beside the erros on dmesg, look at the the L2 cache of the NEW ONE )
Old one:
2 quad core processors that linux recognize as 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5440 @ 2.83GHz - 32Kb L1 - 6Mb L2
48Gb RAM
New one:
8 quad core processor that linux recognize as 32 x AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6136 @ 2.400Mhz (- 64Kb L1 - 512Kb L2
128Gb RAM
The scenario:We run a dataflex system on the old one, with average of 3000 users, with tops at 3300 users and sometimes less then 2000. In the old one, we have a load average from 2 to 6 with the 3000 users, depending on the type of application (sometimes we run reports to txt files that take more then 6 hours to complete and the load average can raise to 12). 85% of this conections are from remote links.
Dataflex is a language that derives from C that have their own sgbd (if we can call it that way), and have a limit of 2gb per table. This size we almost have on 5 tables and we use a dataflex feature to compress the data.
The problem:We are migrating (or trying to) the tables to oracle, so we bought new machines for the DB and the new one to replace the old one, becouse we think that could not handle the job with 2 oracles (load balance). In some tests we could see (or suposed) that the oracle database was not so fast with more then 1000 users (opening same table and doing the same task) and we decided to test the new one with the system that is in production right now, with dataflex tables, to ensure that the problem could be oracle. We change the HDs and IP. Started the system on the new one, and started to monitorate as the real users start their jobs. At 800 users the Load Average raised to 26 and with 1300 users we had more then 115 on Load Average. More users login in and the TOP become slow, pointing 400 of LA. From here we started to get some "Lock time out" erros and we had to change to the old one again, to prevent corruption on the tables. I'm analizing all report tools I know about performance and hardware and I cant see nothing. I saw some errors on dmesg, but I can say that is related to that problem.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared). Why is this happening? Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

I edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...

I went away this weekend and everything with my mysql server was working great. I got home on sunday, and I found that my web pages couldn't be displayed because they were unable to gain access to the mysql database.
I am now not able to log into mysql using root or debian-sys-maint. I get error messages.
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
I have tried loading mysql in safe mode, and changing the passwords, but this does little to help me.
I am unable to retart my services without them failing, so after making the changes i have to manually kill the processes for mysql to get it to stop. After doing that i try to start mysql up, and it gives me a .sock error. I will post some of the errors in my next post, but if anyone has a general idea what i can try to manually override the passwords or reset them. I did read that i can reset the debian-sys-maint password using the msql/rm.conf , but i am unable to log on as root to change the password

Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others. What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!

I recently setup a new server that serves files over samba and is a subversion repository for a number of projects. I did a simple apt-get update/upgrade for which the system requested a reboot. After I rebooted, I got to the login prompt, at which point I ran into a problem. After I enter my correct credentials, it spits out the following error:
sh: error while loading shared libraries libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: Error 24
and returns me to the login prompt. Samba and Subversion are both still working, I simply can't login to the server either physically or via SSH.
What steps should I be taking to correct this issue? My thoughts are that I may need to use a Live CD to load the system and perhaps do another update, but before I go through that process I just wanted to check in and see if there might be some other solution.
I have tried googling the issue, and while I have seen other posts regarding shared library issues, there was never anything about not being able to login and I never did find anything specific to the error message I received.
