I suddenly have a couple of unexplained black bars on the right side of my screen. I recently installed conky and guake, and GNOME Do, but the problem happens whether or not they're running. I've tried rebooting, and turning off desktop effects.
View 3 RepliesI have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 inside my copy of Windows. When I boot my laptop, I have the option to either boot in Windows or Ubuntu. When I boot in Ubuntu, I get the login screen all OK. But when the screen loads up, it is missing the top and left hand side navigation bars. It then appears to be trying to refresh itself (unsuccessfully) as after about 30 seconds the screen goes black and then the wallpaper image will come back, still without the navigation bars. This keeps on happening until I reboot the machine. The only way I can get the screen to reboot OK is to run the repair option on boot up.
I have notices that after the above has taken place and I have finally got the system to boot all OK by running the repair option, the system will not connect to my mobile broadband via the USB dongle. Not sure if they are related, but at this point they seem to be.
After starting up today, I noticed that nautilus has suddenly become quite minimalistic (see screenshot). Additionally, each folder opens in a new window (didn't before) and turns gray when it is opened. It looks the same running as root (except not themed, of course).

Also, gksu no longer works properly. It always reports incorrect password, even when the password is correct. Luckily, gksudo does work. I don't know if this is related.
Is there a way to move the side and or top task bars as well as change there properties (auto hide). I know how to add programs to the side bar but can't figure out how to change the top bar menus. When I ran 32bit thru a windows vm I had a top bar where I could access the programs and no side bar. I liked it better than the 2 bar setup in my 64bit wubi install. Can it be changed?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm still getting some vertical lines through my splash screen, they are just a little darker purple than the rest of the screen, but disappear over the ubuntu logo/text/dots. I've tried the following from the faq, which made the screen at least show up, which is wasn't doing before.

The resolution chosen should be your monitors native resolution.
Other graphics card users may get a black screen with flashing cursor and then a very short duration plymouth. [URL]. One fix for this is to create this file.

After being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Fujitsu P1610 convertible running 9.10. I only like the two bars visible when I need them otherwise they just take up valuable screen space, especially on a 8.9" screen.
My problem is I cannot make the bars come up by moving the cursor via my finger. It works fine if I move the pointer via a mouse but that is not an option when in tablet mode. How can I make them come up when I move the cursor to their location via my finger?
Everytime I boot up and get to the log in screen there are these horizontal bars across my screen how do I fix this? Is it my graphjcs card or something because I got an older hp pavilion laptop thats about 4 years old and is there a way to get these bars off my screen so I can see my laptop more clear?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just set up a separate monitor, I am running Ubuntu 10.04, I use the nVidia graphics driver, Now the Bars on the top and the bottom of the screen won't appear and can't be used. I rebooted w/ out the second monitor and now it disabled itself. I can't get the terminal option at the login screen. When I rebooted the first time w/ the second screen icon's on the desktop appeared. Now nothing appears, but the background. I opened up my browser (Google Chrome) by my key combinations for those who are wondering how I posted this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.04 works fine, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx without problems, it runs fine but after a while the screen starts flashing and the only way out is to reboot with ctrl-alt-del. First of all I get a pale purple screen with blocks of random colour in the middle then it goes on to flashing between two screens. In one the top half of the screen is vertical black and white stripes and the bottom half is black, in the other it is a terminal screen with this distributed across it:

Pulse Audio configured for per-user-sessions
Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt support
Checking battery state
On the latest occasion the text was "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" repeated all over the screen, followed by "checking battery state".
Images on screen looks weird, and i dont know why is that(see attachment to see details) i readjusted vga cable with no luck (besides in windows it doesnt do it)

A couple of days ago, without updating the system or installing any software (AFAIK), a weird blank bar appeared at the bottom of the screen of my Dell Latitude 2100 (check the screenshot for a better detail).It looks like, somehow, the resolution of the screen is now smaller (1024x576) and Ubuntu doesn't recognize anymore this small band of the screen.

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.
I have searched online with no success. The brightness control is working fine on my laptop. Problem is that the bars don't get rendered on screen. Instead I get like a static white line on screen everytime I press the brightness control. On boot however, I can see the correct bars. It is once I start my xsession, the bars do not show up. Here are my specs:

I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.
I have just upgraded from 10.04 (where everything was working fine) to 10.10...I am able to boot in recovery mode (graphic mode is working ok this way), but not in normal mode: just after the purple Maverick boot screen, I get a black screen where my computer stucks, possibly for ever (although I can't be definitive on this point )Do you guys have any thought on what is going on here?I boot once in recovery mode, updated my graphic driver (ati, which was not working well anymre according to catalyst), and then I thought everything would be allright, but it is not the case: still black screen at boot.
View 9 Replies View RelatedTrying to connect an intel atom based TC which uses the Intel D945GSEJT motherboard. We have several old AcerPower F1 PCs which connect OK but the new TC doesn't provides a weird screen resolution at the LDM - 1152x864. I've logged in and looked at the monitors section and it thinks there is a laptop monitor for some reason in addition to an undetected monitor. If I try to change anything I lose my mouse which is VERY strange.
If I boot 10.04 using a USB memory stick on the TC everything is fine - I can get 1280x1024, the monitor is detected and all is well. I've tried changing monitors, fiddling with lts.conf etc with no success. For info, my current lts.conf is as follows

So I just turned my computer on and it was beeping rapidly, and it would stop if I hit "Enter". Also this came on my screen: Cannot set Fray", something like that. It boots fine..just what is that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
I previously installed Ubuntu 11.04 or whatever it is on my computer alongside windows vista and everything was fine until i noticed the display being all screwed up. I changed it to my resolution and the right side of the display was black (vertical), then the screen would go black for 2 seconds,then come back and it would be a different color. Any ideas? I'm thinking it's the intel driver, maybe it didn't update or something? (Intel Pentium Dual Core) Soon, ill upgrade to a newer intel driver
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop so I thought I'd also run it on my arcade machine. The monitor can handle a resolution up to at least 704x513 60hz (the resolution the original arcade game used) and uses composite sync. I've spent some time using xrandr to get the resolution, refresh rate and sync polarities that I need.
These are the commands I used to set my resolution.code...
But it has the same effect since I have the hsync and vsync wired into a composite sync anyway.
What I get is this weird split screen effect that's in the picture. It looks like I'm missing something I just cant figure it out!

I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I tried to install Windows on it, but it was displayed in only 16 colors ( I assume this is not connected to my current problem but it might be...) and I couldn't fix that so I installed Ubuntu 10.4.something( It asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the newest version...) . Since then I have been really happy, I only had minor problem with the chat software but after I googled it I found a solution and I even used the console for the first time in my life.
The problem with the chat software is back now, but I don't care about that.My Computer randomly stops working and the screen goes all weird. It switches between a mix of white and black bars, something really colorful and a black screen with text ( I have the feeling it's different text every time) I am not sure what happens after that, because I always turn it off and restart it. It won't react to anything when it is in this weird mode. I don't think there are any special situations in which it happens and I can't reproduce it, it just happens when I don't want it to happen. A friend who uses Linux said it might be a temperature problem, he only knew what I just told you. I am not sure if there is a connection between the time the computer has been on and the time it shuts off...I really like Linux and I would love to use it without ith when I said that I got my PC new ( it was used though) I was trying to say that I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu problem or not
This is my first attempt at Debian. I am running Ubuntu right now and have run puppy linux in the past. I have an iBook G3 that I put Debian PowerPC on. The install went fine. However, on initial startup, when I believe it should boot into the true GUI, it simply gives me horizontal lines that start white and then turn blue. They move slightly. The computer did have a funky graphics chip prior to install, but I am not convinced that it decided to crap out right after the install, especially considering I can see the startup procedure fine.

Recently, when I cold boot the laptop I will get a line of single pixel width running from the top to the bottom of the screen. This only seems to appear when the x server or the windows gui starts. Now if I turn off the screen after the line appears (e.g. closing the laptop lid while switched on) the line will sometimes disappear and all will be as normal. However, on the next boot I may see the line again. The line has a yellow-ish tint and always appears on the same spot. It appears on both windows XP and Ubuntu, so I assume it's a hardware issue? The line appears even when I have a blank screensaver on.

The small netbookscreen is just not good for this new appbar on the left side (it's one of the old eee-pc's). None of us like that solution, and I wonder if its possible to move the bar on the bottom side of the screen so it will be a bit more Windows 7-ish?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.
