Jul 12, 2011A couple of days ago, without updating the system or installing any software (AFAIK), a weird blank bar appeared at the bottom of the screen of my Dell Latitude 2100 (check the screenshot for a better detail).It looks like, somehow, the resolution of the screen is now smaller (1024x576) and Ubuntu doesn't recognize anymore this small band of the screen.

May 13, 2010I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Acting Weird After Boot Screen?
Oct 10, 2010I have just upgraded from 10.04 (where everything was working fine) to 10.10...I am able to boot in recovery mode (graphic mode is working ok this way), but not in normal mode: just after the purple Maverick boot screen, I get a black screen where my computer stucks, possibly for ever (although I can't be definitive on this point )Do you guys have any thought on what is going on here?I boot once in recovery mode, updated my graphic driver (ati, which was not working well anymre according to catalyst), and then I thought everything would be allright, but it is not the case: still black screen at boot.

Oct 20, 2010Trying to connect an intel atom based TC which uses the Intel D945GSEJT motherboard. We have several old AcerPower F1 PCs which connect OK but the new TC doesn't provides a weird screen resolution at the LDM - 1152x864. I've logged in and looked at the monitors section and it thinks there is a laptop monitor for some reason in addition to an undetected monitor. If I try to change anything I lose my mouse which is VERY strange.
If I boot 10.04 using a USB memory stick on the TC everything is fine - I can get 1280x1024, the monitor is detected and all is well. I've tried changing monitors, fiddling with lts.conf etc with no success. For info, my current lts.conf is as follows

Aug 30, 2010I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop so I thought I'd also run it on my arcade machine. The monitor can handle a resolution up to at least 704x513 60hz (the resolution the original arcade game used) and uses composite sync. I've spent some time using xrandr to get the resolution, refresh rate and sync polarities that I need.
These are the commands I used to set my resolution.code...
But it has the same effect since I have the hsync and vsync wired into a composite sync anyway.
What I get is this weird split screen effect that's in the picture. It looks like I'm missing something I just cant figure it out!

Dec 3, 2010I am asking in the wrong place or anything like that, I tried to understand the Tutorials, but I am only human Oh and I am not a native speaker of English, So I also apologize for that...Okay enough apologizing, I will assume that you are all nice people and wouldn't have made fun of my stupidity anywayAs I said I am new to Linux and also to my PC. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I tried to install Windows on it, but it was displayed in only 16 colors ( I assume this is not connected to my current problem but it might be...) and I couldn't fix that so I installed Ubuntu 10.4.something( It asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the newest version...) . Since then I have been really happy, I only had minor problem with the chat software but after I googled it I found a solution and I even used the console for the first time in my life.
The problem with the chat software is back now, but I don't care about that.My Computer randomly stops working and the screen goes all weird. It switches between a mix of white and black bars, something really colorful and a black screen with text ( I have the feeling it's different text every time) I am not sure what happens after that, because I always turn it off and restart it. It won't react to anything when it is in this weird mode. I don't think there are any special situations in which it happens and I can't reproduce it, it just happens when I don't want it to happen. A friend who uses Linux said it might be a temperature problem, he only knew what I just told you. I am not sure if there is a connection between the time the computer has been on and the time it shuts off...I really like Linux and I would love to use it without ith when I said that I got my PC new ( it was used though) I was trying to say that I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu problem or not
Debian :: New Install On PPC - Weird Screen On Startup?
Feb 3, 2011This is my first attempt at Debian. I am running Ubuntu right now and have run puppy linux in the past. I have an iBook G3 that I put Debian PowerPC on. The install went fine. However, on initial startup, when I believe it should boot into the true GUI, it simply gives me horizontal lines that start white and then turn blue. They move slightly. The computer did have a funky graphics chip prior to install, but I am not convinced that it decided to crap out right after the install, especially considering I can see the startup procedure fine.

Jan 18, 2010I suddenly seem to be having a small issue with my laptops LCD. Recently, when I cold boot the laptop I will get a line of single pixel width running from the top to the bottom of the screen. This only seems to appear when the x server or the windows gui starts. Now if I turn off the screen after the line appears (e.g. closing the laptop lid while switched on) the line will sometimes disappear and all will be as normal. However, on the next boot I may see the line again. The line has a yellow-ish tint and always appears on the same spot. It appears on both windows XP and Ubuntu, so I assume it's a hardware issue? The line appears even when I have a blank screensaver on.

Aug 23, 2011I have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?

Apr 23, 2011I'm trying to get my nvidia card working on my Lucid machine using the proprietary driver (yes I know; have to have 3d for my Nexsuiz to work at a reasonable framerate). It works fine with the nv driver, but as soon as I use the nvidia driver I get a messed-up screen (see attachment). The /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the nvidia driver contains:

[URL] I'm guessing it belongs to an item that isn't there, but if I start an additionnal tray program, the new app doesn't take this place, instead it adds itself to the left of the tray. And it doesn't belong to a program that I used and closed, since it's there after a fresh boot.

Jun 2, 2011I have a pull-down corner on both of my gnome-panels. If I hover my mouse over it, i even get the resize cursor, but you can't actually resize the panel. I'm also seeing them on my screenlets. See the shot below:
The pull-down corners are in the red boxes. It's very clear in the top box on the gnome-panel; it's a little harder to see in the bottom one on the weather screenlet, but it's there. I have a bottom gnome-panel, too, and it's on that one, as well. I just recently noticed them, but I'm not sure where they came from. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? It's not really causing any problems. It just bothers me because I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I've tried searching the web and the forums for a solution but I'm having a hard time finding anything because I don't know the official name for that design element.
Ubuntu :: Multiple Screen Images On Display After Installing Nvidia Resticted Drivers?
Jan 11, 2010I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with an Nvidia 8200M graphics card. When I try to enable visual effects I am asked to install the Nvidia restricted driver. When I do this and reboot, I get 6 copies of the Ubuntu screen on my display. Does anyone know what is causing this? I'm not sure which version it installed, I assume either 173 or 185. I have downloaded version 190 from the Nvidia web site. Should I install that version? If so, it is a .run file, how do I install it?Also, how do I reinstall the old driver. I fixed the problem this time by reinstalling Ubuntu, but that will get old if I have to do it too often.

Whenever I play a flash object that has sound, there is this repetitive beeping noise audible over the audio track. I've tried this on different videos and different sites, always with the same result. Whenever I play a multimedia file in Iceweasel, for example [URL]... plodes.ogv , the sound is normal, as is the sound for any multimedia file that I play in MPlayer. So, I am convinced it is a flash issue. What I don't get is why this just started happening for no apparent reason.
Debian Multimedia :: Weird Content Rendering With Iceweasel - Can't Click On Any Of The Links
Jun 7, 2011Alright ... recently switched from Ubuntu with FF 4.0 to Debian with Iceweasel which I had to upgrade to 4.0 since I really liked the way it worked on Ubu 10.10 ... but I'm having some really strange rendering issues. Flash is not a problem at all, works fine on all flash sites that I've checked out. Some sites though, including this Debian forum, do not show everything in the Iceweasel browser window.
For example, sometimes I'll be browsing on a page with huge chunks of white, clearly indicating that "something" should be in those spaces. When I look at those same pages with Chrome or Opera, everything is filled the way it should be ... all content is displaying properly.
On some sites, like this forum, the rendering is even worse because not only do some items not show up, but in addition most of the links don't work at all. For example, if I use Iceweasel 4.0 to look at the board index of this forum, I can't click on any of the links, not the links in the main sections anyway. If I open up Chrome (that's what I'm using to write this) or Opera, the problem is gone.
What the heck is going on, does anyone know? Is this an Iceweasel bug? Am I missing some package update? I'd hate to have to switch my preferred browser just because this weirdness is going on. At first I thought it was a fluke, specific to a site or two only, but at this point I've seen these rendering issues on about 10 sites ...

I inevitably get some weird green band at the bottom of the frame in the converted video. I know that there's some weird pixel stretching going on here, because the NTSC standard for 16:9 is 720x480 with rectangular pixels, and the 1080 version has square pixels, so I'm guessing the green band is an artifact of that process?

Jan 20, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 video adapter and my monitor seems to flicker whenever the the computer is processing. My system is up to date and I did install the recommended NVIDIA driver. The monitor isn't going blank or anything like that, it just seems like every once in a while different images will pop up for less than a second. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Jul 26, 2010I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: App For Working With Audio CD Images?
Feb 15, 2010Is there a Linux app for mounting and playing audio CDs from image files? I have saved disc images of nearly all of my CD collection, but I have yet to find any convenient way to play them.
Because of the nature of CD audio, every CD image has an accompanying .cue file, so there are actually 2 files (*.iso or *.bin and *.cue) from each disc. VLC Media Player will play DVD .iso images directly, but doesn't know what to do with audio CD images (or the .cue files).
Mounting and unmounting the images at the command line is tedious, given the very long file paths. I'd rather have a GUI-based app. Does any such thing exist for Linux?
FWIW, Acetone ISO doesn't work. It doesn't want to mount my *.iso format CD images. Probably some funkiness of the CD audio format. I think it is what the Acetone devs call a "multi-sector image." Likewise for the *.bin images of CDs.
