Ubuntu :: Weird Split Screen Effect On Arcade Monitor / Fix It?
Aug 30, 2010
I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop so I thought I'd also run it on my arcade machine. The monitor can handle a resolution up to at least 704x513 60hz (the resolution the original arcade game used) and uses composite sync. I've spent some time using xrandr to get the resolution, refresh rate and sync polarities that I need.
These are the commands I used to set my resolution.code...
But it has the same effect since I have the hsync and vsync wired into a composite sync anyway.
What I get is this weird split screen effect that's in the picture. It looks like I'm missing something I just cant figure it out!

it is sometimes triggered when i activate dual monitor (i'm using nvidia-settings). Actually the entire computer seemingly changes its theme, but after simply running System > Appearance, all goes back to normal except for nautilus (that includes icons in the desktop). please see attached image.Logging out then logging back in solves the problem, but i don't want to log out just to correct the problem. Is there anything i need to restart to bring it back to normal?i've tried "compiz --replace" and "compiz --restart" and even "metacity --replace" but it doesn't do anything.by the way, i'm using ubuntu 9.10 64bits, using the default theme, nvidia driver (the default which comes with ubuntu 9.10),using compiz.

I'm trying to use the screen command to start a split screen by default.
I know once I am an in `screen`, I can type C-a S to get a split screen. But is there a way to specify this as an argument to the `screen` command so it starts automatically with a split screen?

I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

I installed the Gnome Splash Screen application to change my login splash screen to the same background as my desktop.After using the program and applying my changes, and rebooting nothing happened. I still have the pink default image in the background instead of the image I chose.I did not have any luck using a search engine to solve this issue.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with an Nvidia graphics card.This is my first attempt at linux support of any kind and I hope I am in the right place and using an acceptable format

I suddenly have a couple of unexplained black bars on the right side of my screen. I recently installed conky and guake, and GNOME Do, but the problem happens whether or not they're running. I've tried rebooting, and turning off desktop effects.

A couple of days ago, without updating the system or installing any software (AFAIK), a weird blank bar appeared at the bottom of the screen of my Dell Latitude 2100 (check the screenshot for a better detail).It looks like, somehow, the resolution of the screen is now smaller (1024x576) and Ubuntu doesn't recognize anymore this small band of the screen.

I'm looking for a c++ IDE and/or Text editor with split screen abilities like what you see below with notepad ++. Having the ability to split your screen is very helpful when comparing code.

As I am getting to know the Ubuntu terminal, I am looking for this application that can automatically divide the current screen by showing a Terminal window at the top.
i already set up a shortcut to open the traditional terminal Window, also i know of the full screen terminal window by pressing ATL+F1 but as I am reading a tutorial I would find it convenient to simply type above the screen while reading the bottom

I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.

I have just upgraded from 10.04 (where everything was working fine) to 10.10...I am able to boot in recovery mode (graphic mode is working ok this way), but not in normal mode: just after the purple Maverick boot screen, I get a black screen where my computer stucks, possibly for ever (although I can't be definitive on this point )Do you guys have any thought on what is going on here?I boot once in recovery mode, updated my graphic driver (ati, which was not working well anymre according to catalyst), and then I thought everything would be allright, but it is not the case: still black screen at boot.

Trying to connect an intel atom based TC which uses the Intel D945GSEJT motherboard. We have several old AcerPower F1 PCs which connect OK but the new TC doesn't provides a weird screen resolution at the LDM - 1152x864. I've logged in and looked at the monitors section and it thinks there is a laptop monitor for some reason in addition to an undetected monitor. If I try to change anything I lose my mouse which is VERY strange.
If I boot 10.04 using a USB memory stick on the TC everything is fine - I can get 1280x1024, the monitor is detected and all is well. I've tried changing monitors, fiddling with lts.conf etc with no success. For info, my current lts.conf is as follows
[default]
X_NUMLOCK = True
X_COLOR_DEPTH = 24
LDM_DIRECTX = True
[Code]...

I just installed 9.10 on my acer as a second partition. The only problem I am having is my split screen is not working correctly. They just mirror each other so I have basically 2 monitors doing exactly the same thing. No splits. My graphics card is nvidia geforce 7300 LE.

I have inadvertently caused the main menu (Applications,Places and System) icons to change to a single icon, a white triangle. I've tried to put back the default but no luck. How can I restore the original?
On workspaces, I created a second workspace but the Workspace Switcher doesn't want to show the 2nd workspace; the display should show a blank window. Also the split screen option doesn't work. Do I need an applet (Pager) to sort this out?

I've been working on getting Linux on this iBook I have.It's running fine HOWEVERThe screen is split up in a rather strange way.I've drawn a diagram, but I can't post it due to the fact I haven't made 15 posts yet.I have a full working desktop in the top left.About 2 inches of the right are just black, and I can't move my mouse over it.Under the address bar, there is a mysterious white line, that extends into the black.Under that, there is the top 2 inches of my desktop being shown again.

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 since it came out using two monitors, on the extended desktop option (the way I want it to be) with no problems. Today I unplugged the HDMI cable from my laptop and used it for my ps3 and now when I put the HDMI back in it will only run in the mirror desktop option. This is not acceptable to me as my 2nd monitor is a 50inch tv with a much higher resolution than my laptop.
When I uncheck the "Same image in all monitors" box it says to log out and back in. Doing this changes nothing(neither has restarting), it is still a mirrored screen.
When I click the detect monitors button absolutely nothing happens. Before today the detect monitors button did work.
How can I go about fixing this?
Edit: Also I just watched a show on the laptop and theres a lot of screen tearing, this didn't happen before.

I ran Kubuntu 10.4 from the Live CD and from the start The screen was automatically set to be as dim as possible, but in the power manager the brightness is set to be as bright as possible. Moving around the slider doesn't do nothing, and when I click the battery icon in the tray, it shows another brightness slider that's set to dim as possible, when I move it around it has no effect and just goes back to where it was when I close the popup window. Right now I'm running from the livedisk on an IBM T42 thinkpad laptop.How do I fix this, is it a hardware issue, I've had problems with my graphics card in the past with compositing in X/Ubuntu.I've found some text files for the backlight, they're all set to 0 which I believe is the problem, however even though I'm running the File Manager as root with kdesudo and the permissions are set to read and write for the owner, who is root, I can't save any changes.

I am asking in the wrong place or anything like that, I tried to understand the Tutorials, but I am only human Oh and I am not a native speaker of English, So I also apologize for that...Okay enough apologizing, I will assume that you are all nice people and wouldn't have made fun of my stupidity anywayAs I said I am new to Linux and also to my PC. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I tried to install Windows on it, but it was displayed in only 16 colors ( I assume this is not connected to my current problem but it might be...) and I couldn't fix that so I installed Ubuntu 10.4.something( It asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the newest version...) . Since then I have been really happy, I only had minor problem with the chat software but after I googled it I found a solution and I even used the console for the first time in my life.
The problem with the chat software is back now, but I don't care about that.My Computer randomly stops working and the screen goes all weird. It switches between a mix of white and black bars, something really colorful and a black screen with text ( I have the feeling it's different text every time) I am not sure what happens after that, because I always turn it off and restart it. It won't react to anything when it is in this weird mode. I don't think there are any special situations in which it happens and I can't reproduce it, it just happens when I don't want it to happen. A friend who uses Linux said it might be a temperature problem, he only knew what I just told you. I am not sure if there is a connection between the time the computer has been on and the time it shuts off...I really like Linux and I would love to use it without ith when I said that I got my PC new ( it was used though) I was trying to say that I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu problem or not

I have 2 screens connected by vga/dvi and need to use different resolutions...at the minute ubuntu is forcing the same for both. Where should I start looking. I have two video files recorded simultaneously. I want to edit them into one video file with non-standard resolution and a split screen view which, two videos can be seen together. I tried kdenlive but I was unable to change the output resolution.

This is my first attempt at Debian. I am running Ubuntu right now and have run puppy linux in the past. I have an iBook G3 that I put Debian PowerPC on. The install went fine. However, on initial startup, when I believe it should boot into the true GUI, it simply gives me horizontal lines that start white and then turn blue. They move slightly. The computer did have a funky graphics chip prior to install, but I am not convinced that it decided to crap out right after the install, especially considering I can see the startup procedure fine.

I've downloaded Ubuntu, Fadora, Linux Mint and Suse, trying to run their live cd's on my old IBM A21p. Each time the screen splits vertically when the package enters the desktop. I'm certain that it's the ATI 128 mobile graphics card in the machine, but I don't have a clue about how to resolve the problem. I would love to run Linux on this system, but I don't have the technical background to get past the initial issue, which is the screwed up graphics.

Can you "split" a network interface in Ubuntu, similar to how airmon-ng lets you use your wireless card in managed and monitor mode, by making another interface out of the same hardware? I know it'd be slower, but I'd still like to do it.

I suddenly seem to be having a small issue with my laptops LCD. Recently, when I cold boot the laptop I will get a line of single pixel width running from the top to the bottom of the screen. This only seems to appear when the x server or the windows gui starts. Now if I turn off the screen after the line appears (e.g. closing the laptop lid while switched on) the line will sometimes disappear and all will be as normal. However, on the next boot I may see the line again. The line has a yellow-ish tint and always appears on the same spot. It appears on both windows XP and Ubuntu, so I assume it's a hardware issue? The line appears even when I have a blank screensaver on.
