Ubuntu :: Scrolling Through The Themes And BOOM The System Blanks Out And Forces Back To The Login?

Aug 10, 2010

I just recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a new desktop and I have immediately begun to have issues. Within 10 minutes of installation, I had begun to look around to change the window 'theme' settings. I was scrolling through the themes and BOOM the system blanks out and forces me back to the login. At first I was thinking it was no big deal, but as it turns out, it will not let me back it.Basically, I use my credentials, it appears to login, it goes to a black screen with the cursor at the top left and then sends me back to login like nothing happened.

Fedora Installation :: Installer Forces Use Of ISCSI On SCSI System

Jun 6, 2010

I'm trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 on system with Adaptec U160 and 2 Ultra160 HD. It is not part of a network and iSCSI is not wanted. But the installer keeps selecting iSCSI automatically and won't let me change it. I try to do a "replace linux system" with my own partition scheme-which preserves the partitions already on this drive. I eventually have to exit the installer.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Boot System Forces Hard Reset

May 6, 2009

I'm new to Linux, tried Ubuntu, had slow boot problems, tried openSUSE 11.1, still have slow boot problems. The issue seems to be that the ata.0 device is slow to respond (ERROR= -16), the boot system forces a hard reset, then a soft reset, configures for UDMA 133, says the drive is ready, then does it again, three times, and then configures the drive for UDMA 100. It's a brand new Western Digital Caviar drive, and windowsXP likes it just fine. Once SUSE boots, everything seems to work just fine. I thought the problem might be with the drive jumpers, so I reset them from cable detect to master/single. No change in the problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Back Up Entire System While Still Login Into SUSE?

Apr 28, 2010

Main reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.

Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.

P.S - I already removed the Ambiance Evolution PPA and reloaded Synaptic Package Manager, but it did nothing.

Ubuntu :: Use Different GDM Login Themes In 11.04?

Jul 4, 2011

But I am becoming very annoyed by the fact that I cannot customize/change my Login window in Ubuntu 11.04.

It's not soo much the fact that I can't get it to look the way I want.. But the fact that the options arent even available/ won't even work anymore.

(Brilliant idea whoever thought of removing it!)

I am not asking how to change the login screen background (wallpaper) I already know how to do that, and have it changed to what I want.

I need to do one of 2 things, (or both)

1. Change the login theme to something nicer. (like you used to be able to do with GDM2setup). ~The actual login window/box is what I want to change.

or

2. Change the current (plain, boxy, white) login window so that it is transparent.

I've seriously been looking around for at least a week on and off, and there is no solution for 11.04 users that I can find.

I keep seeing all over the place. "How to change Ubuntu 11.04 login screen/theme" etc, Yet all those sites are useless, as all they mention is "Ubuntu Tweak" to change the background and "ubuntu logo"..

As stated, I already know this , and how to do it.. So Ubuntu tweak is not what I need here.

How freaking difficult does it have to be to customize something soo simple? I thought this was LINUX. You know, where you can customize all of your stuff, the way you want it? Not have to be stuck with things the way the developers thought it "should be".

There is this "new app" called SLiM" that can supposedly do this, But it breaks everyones system on 11.04, So that idea is shot.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10: Login In Just Brings Me Back To Login Screen?

Jun 5, 2010

I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?

I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.
did :
CTRL + ALT + F1 switch to one virtual console
sudo service gdm stop

Ubuntu :: Login But Almost Immediately Kicks Back To The Login Screen?

Sep 28, 2010

When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.

Hardware :: Unable To See Everything On Screen Without Scrolling Over Then Screen Pulls Back

Jul 7, 2011

I'm trying to fix this screen problem I continue to have (an example: in Evolution, its like my screen is too small to see everything, I have to scroll over down or over, then the window moves over and pulls me back to original spot. I've tried to change the screen resolution and that actually makes things worse. The screen problem is very irritating and I don't know why its happening. I've been using Ubuntu or Mint for years and have never had this problem.

Also, a similar problem but nowhere near as annoying: the sides of either side of screen are black. I can't get the monitor to be completely filled. I went to Intel's website and they have a few drivers compatible for linux (at least that is what they are saying).

I'm using Ubuntu lts 10.04 lucid lynx

OpenSUSE :: BOOM And My Plasma Desktop Crashes And After Refreshing It

Apr 16, 2011

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 (i586) with KDE Desktop 4.6.0 "release 6" on my IBM ThinPad X40. And I have trouble with getting new plasma widgets by internet. To be more concrete, every time I try to install new widget (first I want to view details of that), so when I'm pushing on blue button called "Details", BOOM and my plasma desktop crashes and after refreshing it generates the dump file for reporting to developers.

As this is quite an annoying bug, I've decided to report it, so I've installed all the necessary debugging tools, generated the complete bug report and sent it to KDE team. After this, I've got mail with link on KDE bug tracking system [URL] and found a lot of people being in the same trouble. So, one guy - Dario Andres (I think he's from KDE team) says: "The bug and the fix are in "libattica", may be your version of that library is not the latest. (or there wasn't a release including the fix)" and though after his comment there's a dozen of other replies with the same problem, all of them are marked as the duplicated bug and has no answer.

Well, even I know that my operating system is always up to dated, anyway I've checked that library version on my computer:

giorgi@linux-oary:~> rpm -qa|grep libattica
libattica0-0.2.0-5.1.i586

And I've double checked on the Internet and this is the latest version of this library. So, it's obvious that this BUG 261530 has not solved by this library.

OpenSUSE Install :: Crash Back To Login Screen After Login?

Feb 3, 2010

The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.

It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.

The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.

What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.

Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

Packages:
OpenSuSE 11.2 + KDE 4 factory & enlightenment & qt 4.6 repos
X.Org 7.4-35.3
Kwin 4.3.98-406.6
libqt4 4.6.1+4.6.20100202-1.1

I looked into using iptables and also firewall but then I found an article explaining why an oracle program would not work with SELinux. I then had a quick look round SELinux and added a rule to the 'Network Port' list. I added port 9000 with a type of http_port_t.

Ubuntu :: Switch Themes In HP Mini's System?

Oct 15, 2010

I readily admit I know next to nothing about Linux - so I am pleading mercy here.

My HP Mini 1000 had to be factory reset and that means no more Windows XP on the machine until I can figure out how to install it via USB flash. The machine comes with, from what I can figure out, a modified version of ubuntu.

What I wanted to do was to change away from this iphone-like default GUI but I cannot find any menu options to change the theme (System > Preferences > Theme) There is nothing like that anywhere on the computer as far as I can tell. Nothing. The OS help file even says to go to these menus, but they do not exist.

Does anyone have any knowledge that may be helpful here? Am I going to have to install a completely fresh OS? Surely there is a way to switch themes...
