Nov 22, 2010
I installed VirtualBox 3.2.10 running Windows XP Pro and I don't have Access to my USB Ports in XP.VirtualBox shows the ports but they are grayed out and XP device manager lists Intell 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265CStandard OpenHCD USB ControllerUSB Root ControllerUSB Root Controllerunder device manager but when I click the USB Root Ports it shows nothing attached and says that there are 8 ports available in each HUB.If I plug in a device Windows does not detect a new device or report any kind of errors about USB devices and there are no yellow exclamation points under Device Manager.

I am running 11.04 with a dual boot of vista. I am also running virtualbox (downloaded from oracles site) I installed the extension pack from their website, I have added a new filter and I am in the user group but still virtualbox will not see the usb ports or the device plugged in. The reason for running virtualbox is if I can get the usb to work, I will then remove vista completely from my system and just virtualbox for the only two programmes that do not work in Ubuntu.

I just set up Suse 11.1 64bit and installed Virtual Box 3.1.6. I had it running previously with no problems, however, this time I can't get it to recognize any USB ports. In fstab I entered the line
None /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=1000,devmode=664 0 0
and ran mount -a (no go)
I loaded Vmware Player and it uses the USB ports perfectly fine (go figure) I added to the "none" line auto,
busgid=1000,busmode=0775,devgid= etc.
Still a no go - vmware uses them no matter what I have in "fstab" what am I missing with Vbox?

connect to and be able to control a graphical ubuntu desktop from a standard web brower, over the standard port 80/443 - of course ideally 443 to have a secured connection. Does such a thing exist for this already? How would someone go about setting this up? I have a domain name and use dynDNS which works for certain tasks but I need another solution. Of course being behind a corporate firewall all the usual 'remote access' classification sites are blocked by bluecoat proxy and some cafes and wireless networks also block these sites

I have a JavaCL program trying to open a port on 41xxx and it is getting permission denied unless I run it as root. I would like to grant a single user this permission for opening this port. This program runs fine on a vanilla ubuntu install but not on server. Where does Ubuntu handle user permissions for opening ports?I understand this is typically a no-no on a server but this is an unusual circumstance.

I have a vps server running certain services which can be accessed via a web browser (e.g webmin control panel), but I have recently been unable to access these services from my home machine using Firefox 5.0, running ubuntu 11.04.
Example:
I can access the server on port 80 fine, eg: [URL]
However I cannot access my webmin control panel on: [URL]
The pages takes ages to load and then times out. Same with transmission-daemon on: [URL]
Everything is set up fine on my server, the ports are open in firewall etc. and I can access these pages fine from my work computer.
This has only started happening in the last day or two and had been working fine up till then. I have not messed around at all with the firewall on my home machine. I have tried other browsers besides Firefox with same result.

Normally all I/O goes through the kernel so that it can schedule the operations and prevent processes from stepping on each other. A few special user processes are allowed to slide around the kernel, usually by being given direct access to I/O ports. X servers are the most common example of this isn't it ? give examples for any other processes that are allowed to slide around the kernel ?

My friends all request that I join Farmville so they can build their points. I don't play games but tried to oblige them. My firewall went nuts and I received requests to "open" certain ports. Can some one tell me what is going on and is this a security risk or not. I am 4 years deep into Linux and I haven't used microcrap in as many years but I am still learning, as there is so many things to master with Linux.

How to create a user account on a Linux desktop machine with restrictions on connecting to the LAN, WAN, PCMCIA ports, Firewire, CDROM and generally any user controllable output options?
I have the task to set up a machine for users working with sensitive data that should not be leaving the machine where it is processed. This means disabling access to the ethernet device, lan, all other ports as mentioned earlier, and any other way of leaking the data.
In Mac OSX this was achieved using "Parental controls" from the System preferences; this even allows a selection of the applications that can be used. Under XP, Device Manager offers the option to click various devices and "Disable" them, which worked so far just fine. Some will point out that the latter mentioned OS may be easy to circumvent the security of in other ways, but that has been mitigated with other measures and it's not the point anyway. For the operator users in question, the aforementioned measure proved successful and worked.Using OSX and XP to do this was a 10-15 minutes job with testing included.
So far all guides and tutorials pointed to useradd, groups an facl, but in actual practical terms did not help at all, in fact most of the research did not render any practical results so far. I surely don't expect to point and click, and would gladly run a set of commands from CLI. If I had them. I would really would like to achieve the same restricted user account configuration in a concise, comprehensive and practical manner under Linux too. Preferably tested on humans before, and known to be workign, of course.
The machines that need to be set up are two laptops running Ubuntu. So how can this be accomplished in Linux?

I upgraded to VirtualBox 3.2.0, and I finally installed Windows XP Professional onto it. Anyways, have any of you noticed that when you set the VM to fullscreen, you cannot access the taskbar at all? The icon for the cursor reverts to my Linux cursor, showing that the focus switched to Linux somehow in someway. The taskbar is set to always show, and this happens at the EXACT pixel that the panel starts at. It's pretty annoying if I say so myself. Forgot to mention, that this only happens with the mouse integration, and not mouse capture (for obvious reasons). Using: Windows XP Professional 32-bit (guest, and running SP3 with all updates) on VirtualBox 3.2.0 hosted by Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit (using KDE).

I used the standard disk utility on another 2.6.x Ubuntu desktop to encrypt a USB device. Can I access this through a similar VM on a Mac OS X host?
I don't have any problems accessing normal USB devices on the VM, but when I insert the encrypted one, I get an error message saying that it can't be mounted.

I currently have VirtualBox installed on my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop. I have windows xp as a guest os and it has network shares on it. My question is, is there a way for another computer to access those network drives on the guest os in virtualbox? I don't want to search for hours on end on google, a simple no would be fine - however if it is possible let me know because when I am in windows on another computer that has windows as a host os it sees it in the windows network folder but it says "....network location not found" or something similar but it still shows a pc picture of the virtual os of the virtual box program running in ubuntu.

Is it at all possible to disable internet access for the Debian host while providing internet access to the VirtualBox guest(s)?
I plan to only hook up the host to the internet for updates, upgrades and installations, although if I can, then I will make a Debian guest to test everything out and download the files from there and install everything on the host without even a single host connection point.
Is this the indomitable approach to intercommunication security? If not, then what haven't I thought of yet?

I used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. Now no matter what I do, I cannot get it back to being accessible from the host os! I even did a completely NEW install of Ubuntu guest OS in Virtual box Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Host OS: OpenSUSE 11.3 VirtualBox: 3.2.6

I have an USB internet key (multimode GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA) that only works on Windows. Though, I mainly use Linux for development activities and I don't want to move them to Windows. For this reason I decided to use a Windows guest on VirtualBox for internet access and the Linux host for the other stuffs, but I'd greatly prefer to use Linux for everything (internet too) and Windows only as internet gateway.

Observed on two host systems both with openSUSE 11.3 32 bit using ext4: When a big files, in this case a 1.2 GB and a 1.7 GB is copied from DVD, usb harddrive or shared folder into a Windows 7 32 bit guest system, the copied file is corrupted. The md5sum has changed and until the guest system has been rebooted successive md5sum tests on the same file comes up with various results... After a reboot md5sum tests show consistent results, but a sum different from the original file.

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:
[code]...
When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?
