OpenSUSE :: 11.1 - VirtualBox Sees All USB Ports As Unavailable?

Apr 16, 2010

I just set up Suse 11.1 64bit and installed Virtual Box 3.1.6. I had it running previously with no problems, however, this time I can't get it to recognize any USB ports. In fstab I entered the line
None /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=1000,devmode=664 0 0
and ran mount -a (no go)
I loaded Vmware Player and it uses the USB ports perfectly fine (go figure) I added to the "none" line auto,
busgid=1000,busmode=0775,devgid= etc.
Still a no go - vmware uses them no matter what I have in "fstab" what am I missing with Vbox?

Ubuntu :: Virtualbox Unable To Detect USB Ports

Aug 13, 2011

I am running 11.04 with a dual boot of vista. I am also running virtualbox (downloaded from oracles site) I installed the extension pack from their website, I have added a new filter and I am in the user group but still virtualbox will not see the usb ports or the device plugged in. The reason for running virtualbox is if I can get the usb to work, I will then remove vista completely from my system and just virtualbox for the only two programmes that do not work in Ubuntu.

OpenSUSE :: Yast2 Can't Access Repositories - Broswer Sees It Okay

Jul 15, 2011

Trying to use Yast2, and it gives errors: " can't access installation media [url] " and this is with all the repositories that used to work fine. Not sure what it could be? I tried to use a mirror, and I got the same results.

Does Yast2 use a port other than port 80 to connect to the repositories? I have not updated the firewall since using Yast last. Have the repository servers been updated since the release of 11.3, to make some editing of the repositories in Yast necessary?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Read-only External HD - Ntfs-3g Unavailable On Suse10.2

Jan 1, 2010

I'd like to upgrade to suse 11.2 (currently using suse 10.2) and I've attached an external hard drive to save some data on, but it will only mount read-only, by either automount or by command line.

Here's the mount command I use (as root): mount -t ntfs -o rw /dev/sdb1 /media/ExpansionDrive

But when I look, permissions are dr-x------ 1 root root 4096 2009-12-05 13:38 cgate

Some related discussion on the opensuse forums has mentioned ntfs-3g, but my external filesystem type is ntfs. ntfs-3g is not available on my system currently or when I search for it with yast. I'm assuming I don't necessarily need ntfs-3g in order to mount my drive as read-write, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

How To Mount NTFS Filesystem Partition Read Write Access in openSUSE

However, these have not been specific enough to solve this particular issue. I can't think of any other possible problems other than the ntfs-3g.

Not sure if this is necessary, but I'm using SUSE 10.2, kernel 2.6.18.2-34, and the external drive is a Seagate 1TB.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Suddenly Sees Xls Files As OLE2 Application/x-ole-storage

Apr 18, 2011

All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.

Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.

As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.

Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Setup For PCI LPT Card With Two Ports?

Oct 20, 2009

I use libk8000 with Velleman K8000 IO-board. It works fine with a machine which have port integrated on the motherboard. But my new machine does not have LPT on the motherboard. Therefore I bought a PCI LPT-card which have two LPT ports.

It is a board from NetMos Technology. lspci -vvvv gives following.
05:02.0 Communication controller: NetMos Technology PCI 9815 Multi-I/O Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 2P0S (2 port parallel adaptor)
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 18
Region 0: I/O ports at e480 [size=8]
Region 1: I/O ports at e400 [size=8]
Region 2: I/O ports at e080 [size=8]
Region 3: I/O ports at e000 [size=8]
Region 4: I/O ports at dc00 [size=8]
Region 5: I/O ports at d880 [size=16]
Kernel driver in use: parport_pc
Kernel modules: parport_pc

In the libk8000 the data, status and control ports are statically defined. Are the I/O addresses and IRQ-line dynamically defined each time computer is restarted. Might they change in each boot or only when hardware is changed? If so any links to code that dynamically acquires these values would be good. Kernel supports this card because I can connect printer to it and it works. Where in the parport-subsystem is the code which acquires the IO and IRQ?

If the IO and IRQ don't change in each boot then what might be the data, control and status ports for LPT1 and LPT2 on the above lspci-listing? I have tried several combinations without result. On the motherboard LPT the ports are in increasing order with 1 byte. On the lspci-listing above there are 8 byte regions with each IO-address. The last one have 16-byte area - why ?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Permissions For Accessing Serial Ports?

Feb 3, 2010

I am unable to access a serial port as normal user in OS 11.2. The ownership for the port,/dev/ttyS0 belongs to root:dialout. Group dialout has RW permissions. So,I guess the user has to belong to 'dialout' group.Even after a user is included in dialout port, still the user is unable to access,"Permission is Denied".

Before OS 11.2,I used to make the users members of group "uucp" to get serial port access.I tried that also in OS 11.2,without luck. So,I have to be root to access it. This requirement itself seems to be one of the fossils of old time Linux where for normal usage of PC resources, one needed elevated privileges.I guess the trend now is to let the user do all PC work, but in a safe way.

OpenSUSE Network :: Block All Ports But Port 80 With Iptables (DMZ)?

Jun 25, 2010

I have a Suse 10.3 router with 4 network cards. 1 is to connect to the big network and thereby also the internet, 2 are for 'client' subnets and I want to use the last one as a DMZ. In this DMZ will be a web server which has to be accessible from the other 2 subnets and from the big network. I could do it with a few simple clicks in Yast firewall, but I have some issues with this firewall and there for I want to use it as minimal as possible, using Iptables.

So now I'm struggling a bit with Iptables. Basicly what I'm looking for is how to block all ports but 80 in this last subnet with iptables.

The attempt was unsuccessful. The url used was [URL]. firefox webbrowser keeps showing'connecting ...' until timeout. I'm assuming that inspite of the specified port openings in the firewall, it is somehow ignored. If I were to disable the firewall, then I can access the tomcat server with the firefox webbrowser.

OpenSUSE Network :: Need To Alter Services Files If Ports Open In Firewall?

Jan 11, 2011

I have a question about /etc/services file. If I open ports in firewall, do I need to alter /etc/services file in order for certain apps to work?

kpasswd 464/tcp # kpasswd
kpasswd 464/udp # kpasswd
# Theodore Ts'o <tytso&MIT.EDU>
# 465 is illegal used by eMail Server
smtps 465/tcp # eMail Server
#urd 465/tcp # URL Rendesvous Directory for SSM
igmpv3lite 465/udp # IGMP over UDP for SSM
# Toerless Eckert <eckert&cisco.com>
digital-vrc 466/tcp # digital-vrc
digital-vrc 466/udp # digital-vrc

Above example shows if 465 tcp isn't altered, Postfix MTA fails to listen on 465 tcp port. What if there's a bigger span 3000:7000 TCP/UDP, is there a need to alter each line by hand?

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 10.3 Assigning Wrong Drivers To Ethernet Ports (e1000, E1000e)?

Aug 23, 2010

I have loaded Suse 10.3 on a system that has 4 Ethernet ports, all Intel chipsets. 2 ports have the 82571 chipset, 1 port has the 82573 chipset and the last one has the 82567. The 82567 chipset can use the e1000 driver and the 8257x chipsets require the e1000e driver. We are only actually using the 82571 ports.

When the system is booted, the 82567 seems to get bound to the e1000 driver and the 82573 gets bound to the e1000e driver. Doing an "lsmod" I see both drivers loaded. It appears the 82571 drivers are getting bound to the e1000 driver which is a major problem. They work for a while but eventually they lock up with enormous error counts according to "ifconfig". How I know the e1000 driver is bound to the 82571 ports is that when I remove it(modprobe -r e1000) and then try to use one of them, I get a "network unreachable". When e1000 is loaded these ports seem to work fine. I tried modding the file in /etc/sysconfig/hardware that corresponds to the PCI address of these ports(i.e., hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:08:00.0) to force the module to e1000e, but no luck there either.
