Slackware :: Disk Space Lost- Root Partition Has Very Little Space Left

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.
Here is the output of df -h:

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

My root partition seems to be full bur is wrong because I have a partition with 15Gb space and the data is arround 7.5Gb I have:

When I look for specific info about what is taking the space using du command I get that the space used by the root system is 7.2Gb. I get to the same conclusion when checking the space with Nautilus.

df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.
du -sh /* | sort -gr | head -n 5
I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.

I have been installing Fedora 8 Linux with already having Windows Xp as my primary OS....
I have a total of 80GB Hard disk.Out of 80 GB,I have freed 8GB for Linux.But during Installation after "selecting language for keyboard" and then choosing "Create Custom Layout", while giving partitions I have alotted 4GB for '/' and 2GB for Swap.
Initially space was created for root(/)...but it is unable to create space for swap and all other boot,home etc...
It is showing the error msg as "Could not create partition as there is no space left for /(root)"...

I was saving a few pictures, and I realized that none of them were actually being saved. I went to my home folder and I noticed that I only had 0 bytes left, then I deleted everything in my trash, got some space back, then it disappeared.

I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

I've 120GB of disk space. I've allocated 40GB each to my three partitions. Few days ago I've deleted some of the programs from the C drive (40GB). After that time my C drive shows only 33GB of space.
I've installed gparted but it also shows 33GB of space in C drive. Hows that possible? What can I do to get back my 7GB of lost space?

My boot partition doesn't have any space left, rendering me unable to install any updates. Most space in the boot directory (85 MB) is taken by the following files:
initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-26-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-27-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-28-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-29-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-30-generic
It seems to me that I�d need at most one of these. What exactly do (or did) these initial ramdisks do, and is it safe to delete them?

For our workgroup I set up a server which is basically 10.04.2 with kernel 2.6.32-32-server on a SSD and all the data on a RAID 5 consisting of 4 2TB hard disks, thus a maximum of 6TB space for data on the RAID. Having multiple users with different amounts of data from different scientific data source I set up an lvm on top of the RAID

Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
sudo df -ah
/dev/mapper/home--data-Genomes
1,9T 850G 920G 49% /genomes
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop last week. I had it dual-booted with Vista, but when it became apparent that I would be using Ubuntu much more than Vista from now on I wanted to resize my partitions. Originally, Vista was ~180 Gib with about 100 Gib of free space and Ubuntu was ~ 40 Gib with about 5 Gib of free space.So all in all there was ~105 Gib of free space on my system.When I tried to resize my partitions from the Ubuntu live CD, it bombed out after it had already resized the two main partitions. When I rebooted, Ubuntu loaded fine and Gparted now says that it is 120 Gib, which is right but there is still about 5 Gib of free space.The Vista partition only has ~28 Gib of free space, so now I only have ~33 Gib of free space

I ve read this page and tried some methodes such as opening nautilus with"gksudo nautilus" and then checking (the now root?) trash bin.Ive got a ext4 formated truecrypt container which has a size of 400GB. After I have deleted all the files in it nautilus tells me that I now have only about 100gb free space but I cant see any files in the container anymore.

I am currently running slackware 12.2 on a 25 GB partition. I like to use slackbuilds, but when I try to compile larger tarballs (like abiword, or a patched version of Ghostscript as I did today) I receive an error-message: 'Not enough space left on device'. I think the size of the partition must be big enough (I never got this message when compiling with Linux From Scratch). I think it has something to do with the size of my /tmp directory, but I don't know how to fix this. Is there a way to solve the problem, so that I could be able to use slackbuild-scripts?

I originally had an Ubuntu partition on my hard drive which occupied about half of it. I installed Windows 7 in the remaining unallocated space and I was planning on doing a grub update from a live cd afterwards. BUT when I looked at my partition table, the space where the ubuntu partition used to be is now unallocated space!

I just installed Fedora on my pc with windows XP pre-installed (dual boot). I had the same setup with ubuntu before with no problems. My ntfs windows partition is of 15 gb approximately and the remaining space that was available for fedora was about 220 GB (non partitioned - I removed all the partitions excepting the windows one using gparted from liveCD prior to beginning installation) ..........after installation etc etc.....my home folder shows me only 150GB of space.....what's happening? Where has all the remaining space gone to?

OS: RHEL AS 5 64-bit
HDD:300 GB Hardware mirror (HP blade bl460c)
While installing OS, in partition window after OS file system structure I've left 277 GB. But after installation it shows Size - 255GB and available disk space is 242 GB.
Isn't it weired? How can I use the total amount of space in Linux? I need the whole 277GB exactly. What should be my workaround?

my home partition is an extended one, and when i want to create an unallocated space the space will stay in that extended partition. but there is also an 7 gb unallocated space which i want to merge with the other unallocated space. I also cannot extend that partition over that 7 gb. how can i overcome that problem?

I just tried to download a torrent and got an error message indicating there was no space left in the download location I'd specified.
This happened earlier when df -h showed ~900M of free space. Just now, I'm showing ~2.2G of free space. Anyone have ideas what could be causing this?

I'm trying to free up some space on the 4GB partition of my netbook since I've been receiving these warnings that I have NNN_MB left as free space. So what I did was to remove programs (via Ubuntu Software Center) that I thought wasn't that a priority for me.
But, there seems to be no change! Am I doing something wrong? The warnings keep coming.
Now that I'm thinking of upgrading to Lucid Lynx, I'm not too sure if I can.

The partition is formatted to ext3, starting with block 1 on the drive. The mount point for /dev/sdc1 lists 0 files when doing `ls -A` `df -h` shows that the partition has 92MB used. How is this space being used, and how can I free it up?edit: I guess this isn't a newbie question.

have Debian "testing" installed. During the installation I selected to have a separate /home partition. / partition is ~10Gb, and my /home is ~300Gb. I didn't think I would need more than 10 for /.The other night, Debian informed me that I had 0 bytes remaining on /. I purged /temp an went about my day, only to be greeted with the message again the next morning.I've tried shrinking /home and increasing / via an Ubuntu live CD with GParted, but for some reason it did not want to work. I have some contiguous free space available next to where my root partition resides on the hard drive. I was thinking of resizing the root partition with gparted to take up this space, but it's kind of risky. I was wondering if there is another way to include this partition into my Linux partition without resizing? Like somehow link it in so that / will have more free space?

i have a 700GB ext4 partition for storage purposes. By default it has 5% of the space (35GB!) reserved for root, which does not make sense for this partition. how can i reduce this percentage? there is already a lot of data on the partition and i'm afraid that mke2fs would erase all the data. is there a way to change the percentage without touching the data?

I'm not sure if I can even explain this properly! I'm attaching a hopefully self-explanatory screenshot of
(1) system monitor saying that 23.3 out of 24.6 GB of my root is used (!!!)
(2) diskanalyzer showing root should be 5.9+4+3.3+some small stuff = about 15 GB.
At startup I get a warning saying something along the lines of "you only have 50MB available on root file system.. you should delete unnecessary files.. " and that opens Disk Usage Analyzer.
Possible suspect - I had been trying out VirtualBox. On root. My virtual machine did have an 8gig hard drive, expandable I believe. But it never got past 1.7, and I've removed it, uninstalled VB and removed it from trash. (Is this weird: my trash is at /home/me/.local/share/Trash/files - took me a hell of a while to find it!)
With 100MB available on root I can barely do anything! My whole compiz/config setup even disappeared after a reboot!
