Software :: Gparted - Move Xp Install To A Bigger Hard Drive
Aug 25, 2010I wonder if anyone can help me. A little background, I wanted to move my xp install to a bigger hard drive. I used Saikee's method and worked fine (as usual). My machine was a dual boot system, the xp partition was with little space so I get rid of my vista install, deleted its partition. That went fine also. Rebooted directly to XP.The problem is as follows:
a) In order to increase the size of my xp partition (old machine, athlon64 1gb of RAM) I moved my data partition to the left in order to have unallocated space near the xp partition. That was successful, I rebooted and everything was fine.
b) I run again Gparted and increased the size of the partition. Gparted told me the process was successfully applied. I rebooted.
c) after post I get the following error "error reading disk, press ctr-alt-del". I did it like five times and I get the same message.
d) With my xp install disk I tried fixboot and fixmbr and nothing changed
Since I have the original hd, I did it again, and the same thing happened after resizing xp partition, before the resizing process I was able to boot normally. I used Gparted live cd v 0.6.2 and as far as I recall I left "adjust to mib" option

May 29, 2010so I just installed Squeeze Alpha1 amd64, dual boot with MS Vista using Grub. Everything seemed fine, but I'm apparently missing about 40GB of space. It should be set up as so:
101GB NTFS /dev/sda1 - Vista
12GB NTFS /dev/sda2 - HP Recovery
45GB ext3 /dev/sda3 - / Debian squeeze

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install From Lucid CD And Home Folder Access
May 17, 2010I have a 160gb Hard Drive, I partitioned like this:
1. First partition 16GB, ext4, mounted / I have my Lucid filesystem on this partition and boot flagged.
2. Second partition 112GB (extended- 110gb as /home, and 2gb as swap memory)

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?

Apr 28, 2011I will be installing Natty using the alternative CD.My system has a separate Home partition.Do I need to erase the contents of the Root and Home partition with gparted or similar,prior to the fresh installation of Natty or will the installer take care of all that automatically?

Jul 18, 2010Im using suse 11.1 with /home on a separate partition. To move my /home to a larger partition it looked easy to use Yast partitioner. I copied all /home/ files first to the new partition and backed-up fstab.
with Yast I unmounted /dev/sdb6 = /home and mounted it to /local
then unmounted /dev/sda4 = mynewhomepartition and mounted it to /home
checking the new fstab it looked fine but after a restart it did not work and I got an error. resetting the original fstab resetted the system as it used to be. My question is: why does it not work, are there (hidden) files with the old or other settings?.

May 10, 2010How would I go about moving a separate home partition back to /, and be able to delete the /home partition? I'm assuming I would have to copy the contents of /home to the root partition, and change fstab at the very least.

Now, I've added up the numbers, and they sure don't add up to 74.51 GB. Any way that I can make /home bigger? It won't let me increase it anymore beyond 7.89 GB, which is a total bummer.

Jul 1, 2011Been digging around and not finding anything that quite works.
Background: I had an existing 10.10 install and 10.04 on another partition. When I installed the 10.04 I told it to use the existing /home partition which is also being used by the 10.10 install. All good, both users have directories with all their data in the same /home partition.
Issue: So, as the 10.04 was 32bit (experimenting but another story) I decided I would replace with 10.04 64bit. All went well except when I did the manual partitioning I screwed up and instead of setting the existing /home partition to 'use but don't format' - which I think is what I must have done last time - I left it as 'don't use and don't format'. So, obviously, now the new 10.04 install has its /home inside /, which I don't want. I want it on the existing /home partition as it was with the previous 10.04 install.
Question(s): Is there any simple(ish) way of doing this without a reinstall? Not a major problem as I have only just installed and can do it again without losing anything but time, but I would like to figure out a way to do it without if possible.I want to essentially move the /home/user directory (rather than the /home) and make it /media/home/user inside the existing partition. Seems easy enough on the surface but becomes involved as I investigate.Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install with Xfce DE.
Ubuntu :: Used Space On A Fresh New Ext4 Partition?
Sep 9, 2010I used gparted to format a 360GB partition with ext4 and I expected it to have at most several hundred MB used for whatever reason by the file-system, but it said 18GB were used. How come? Are there any file-system settings I should have paid attention to?

Jun 16, 2010I installed a dual boot windows 7 and xubuntu and now decided that I would like to allocate more hard disk space to xubuntu. I've resized the windows partition (sda2 in the screenshot) and it is now the grey unallocated. I'm having trouble moving this unallocated space to the linux portion (sda5). I did my homework and found that this is done by booting off a live cd and using gparted from there, because you can't modify a partition that you're using. I also read that you had to turn swap off. I did both of these tasks, but as you can see from the attached screenshot, I am unable to resize the linux partition to fill the unallocated space.
Here's my "sudo fdisk -l" for reference:

Ubuntu :: Move Home To Another Computer?
Nov 22, 2010I have just put together a new computer using an Intel i3-550 64 bit processor, and installed Windows (first), then Ubunutu 10.04. A separate /home partition was created. The hdd in this computer is formatted ext4.
Now I want to move my /home partition from my old 8.04 computer (32 bit, formatted ext3) which also has a separate /home partition.
Both are connected to a lan, but so far I have not been able to connect from one to the other.
I have done lots of googling on this and am astonished at the apparent complexity involved. There seem to be issues involving whether or not the /home partition in the old computer is in use, user permissions, and I don't know what all else.
Assuming that neither the ext3 on the old and ext4 on the new, nor the 32 bit on the old and the 64 bit on the new are not issues, how do I go about moving the /home from the old to the new? If possible, I would like to use a GUI rather than the command line, but if it is necessary to use the command line, please specify where one needs to be located in the file hierarchy in order to give the designated commands. I am not very knowledgeable about using the terminal.
Fedora Installation :: Installing Fresh Copy Using Home Folder From Ubuntu?
Jul 16, 2009I've been using Ubuntu for the past 4 years or so and would like to give Fedora a try. I have a question - should I decide to ditch Ubuntu for Fedora I will want to install but keep my Home folder.Normally whenever I've reinstalled Ubuntu I've installed over top of my existing installation. I have 3 partitions:
1 - Root
2 - Swap
3 - Home
When I reinstall I normally format root and swap but keep home and choose my usual user name. hen I boot up after install all my settings for all my apps are retained.
If I install Fedora this way (keeping Home while formatting Root and Swap) will I get the same results?

The bad news is the unallocated space is on my primary partition, so gparted is not allowing me to use that space to create another partition since I already have two primaries and an extended. Feb 16, 2010I tried to move 2.7TB of data from my /var/webroot/ partition (4.5TB total in size). I left it to run over night, this morning when I came to check I saw that all data on / paratition is used up and no operations can be done because of the "no space left on device" message.

Dec 28, 2010Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit/ and /storage are on two different partitions. I want to move my home directory to the /storage partition, so I went to System -> Administration -> Users and Groups then Advanced Settings then the Advanced tab. I changed Home Directory from /home/billy to /storage/home/billy. I click on ok and I'm asked if I want to copy all the user's files over to the new location or start fresh. I click, Copy Files. It acts like it's doing something, but all it does is create the home/billy directories inside /storage, but it never copies files over and the next time I go to /home/billy it's still in the old location. What the heck is the deal?

Apr 7, 2009I currently have a server with the default VolGroup00 that contains logical volumes for the root file system and swap using logical volumes LogVol00 (root) and LogVol01 (swap.) I need to take space from LogVol00 and move it to LogVol01. I have found documentation for increasing the swap, and the resizing the logical volumes. However in the documentation and the man pages it says that I have to reduce the size of teh file system on the logical volume I am going to shrink. I have found documentation resizing the logical volumes but not the file systems.

Jan 11, 2010I want to move my home directory to a separate partition so I can install the new versions of Ubuntu without losing my data. And while I'm at it, what other important directories should I move to separate partitions? And how do I do it? I'm guessing that the /boot directory should also be moved to its own partition too, yes? Because it has the GRUB in it, and if I removed Ubuntu to make way for a newer version of Ubuntu, I'll just get an error because the computer can't find the GRUB that doesn't exist anymore, right? And also, if I move those important yet-to-be-listed directories to their own separate partitions, how large should those partitions be?
I don't want to miss out on the upcoming Lucid Lynx (If it will work in the first place, of course ) By the way, I have an Ubuntu-Windows XP dual-boot system. I'll attach a screenshot of my partition table from GPartEd. You can see that I have about 300 GB. The largest partition is Ubuntu.

I'd like to move some folders for example ./thunderbird or so that I wouldn't need to make a backup. Or at least is it possible that program can right files to two folders, or that everything from /home./thunderbird would copy automatically to ./thunderbird on another partition every time there is a change? Is it possible to write a script or something? I use luckybackup but I would like to be able to forget about backups and make script or program to do it for me.

Jun 19, 2011I'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.

Jan 19, 2010As I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

Jun 9, 2010I am planning to move to Lucid from Karmic now that I am out of university for the summer and have time. I have heard that there is a way to copy your home folder over to the next release and all of the data and program settings will remain intact. I have tried some research on the subject but everything I have found has been extremely confusing. I want to do a fresh install (as my updater has been failing time and time again and asking for partial upgrades etc). Instead of creating a new partition for the home folder, would it be possible to move it to an external drive and copy it back over (I have tried to copy it to the external but I get some errors even in sudo)?
