Ubuntu :: Upon Reboot Autologin Doesn't Work
Jun 1, 2011
I saw that Evolution 3.0 was available for 11.04 so I decided to give it a shot. I installed it via ppa following these directions:
[URL]
There were a bunch of dependencies that installed and required a restart. Upon reboot, autologin doesn't work and graphically the desktop is uglier with a different theme. Unity is not working properly, the wallpaper does not exist and many, many artefacts are present.
Screenshots:
Based on my description and the posted instructions, is there a way to undo what I did short of a format and re-install?

I've been on 11.2 KDE for about a week (clean install). Previously on 11.1 Gnome. Everything's great except I can't get Autologin to work consistently. It worked perfectly in 11.1 Gnome! In 11.2 KDE sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I set it up as root in both Yast and System Settings.

I have a Microsoft LifeCam webcam. It works great under Ubuntu 10.04... Until I reboot. After the reboot, Cheese reports no device connected. I have to get down behind my PC, unplug the webcam and plug it in againThen it works... until the next reboot.

I read about PulseAudio and thought it might be nice to try (especially the way you could individually control the volume of all applications seems nice), so I installed it and it worked fine.
I rebooted, and now it doesn't work again. Before, when I opened pavucontrol and went to the "Output Devices" tab, it showed the actual output sevices I have. Now it only lists one called "dummy output".
So what's the problem? Also, can I start it before X11 (I guess that putting "pulseaudio --start" in ~/.bash_profile should do it)?

# cat /etc/init/tty.conf
# This service maintains a getty on the sepcified device.
stop on runlevel [016]
respawn
instance $TTY
exec /sbin/mingetty $TTY
exec /sbin/mingetty --autologin user tty1
when i use this conf I'm auto logged back in again , and cant't execute any command
commenting pre-last line has no effect.
How to enable autologin on desired tty for certain user?

last week while I was using ssh to the computer1 inside a NAT as usual, I made another tunnel from the computer1 that I was connecting to, to another computer2 inside that NAT (ssh 192.168.1.130) and after making some changes in computer2 I typed reboot. The computer2 rebooted but the tunnel totally hung and I had to kill it in my laptop. Since that day I haven't been able to ssh to the computer1 as I am used to.
Here is some more information:
debug3: authmethod_is_enabled publickey
debug1: Next authentication method: publickey
debug1: Offering public key: /home/une/.ssh/id_rsa

Struggled a little to get Broadcom driver working with my Dell laptop. But I am at a point where if I manually type 'modprobe b43' the wireless works. If I reboot, it doesn't work automatically and I have to 'modprobe b43' again. Any ideas what I am missing here?I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work automatically. I did check to activate device when computer starts in network manager

I have installed knoppix 6.0.1 persistent to a usb flash drive. I am currently testing it on my laptop and have successfully installed the graphics driver for nVidia Geforce 7150m driver 180.51
All looks great until i restart and it doesnt work again. when i go to reinstall it, it says its already there, but when i open the nvidia-settings, it doesnt look the same as before. If i reinstall it, it works again, until i restart of course. In case this is important, here is how i installed the driver in root terminal:
sudo apt-get install gcc make
init 3
cd /home/knoppix/Desktop
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run
(A series of questions come up asking to compile a kernel, etc.)
(install runs)
init 5
I am guessing that the new kernel needed for the driver that is installed is not being booted up on when knoppix restarts. I am just unsure as how I can make this kernel accessible at start up or how to start up this kernel again without reinstalling the driver

I've built a system and installed Debian 5.0.7 on it, the one thing I'd like to do is to get it to autologin at startup. I've changed my /etc/inittab and ~/.bash_profile as per the instructions in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=29333
so that they look like this:
/etc/inittab:
# /etc/inittab: init(8) configuration.
# $Id: inittab,v 1.91 2002/01/25 13:35:21 miquels Exp $

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

Since Gnome doesn't support a 'reboot into [OS]' feature, one has to use a script. Such a script would be used in both windows (probably batch file) and linux (maybe python?) to replace the GRUB menu file and by that select the OS in which you want to boot on reboot. Both OS's should run another script on startup to put the default menu file back.
Problems:- Ext4: there are no windows drivers available (yet)(they would have to support reading and writing)- GRUB2: the old GRUB menu was very easy, one had to edit just one file (!or replace it!). In GRUB2 things got complicated. I think you can edit grub.cfg and that it will still work, the reason why you should not edit it is just because it gets overwritten by running update-grub2. But I'm not sure. If - The script I found is used to edit the Grub file, not to replace it with another one. (This is but a minor problem.)
Solutions:- Ext4 is mountable with Ext2fsd (not with Ext2ifs because of the inode size), it has been reported to work with extent enabled, but I haven't tested it yet. Here is a tutorial to mounting Ext4 drives in windows (which require disabling extent)- If editing the grub.cfg would really be a bad idea, downgrading to GRUB (legacy)- If I couldn't mount Ext4, trying to put Grub on a separate FAT/NTFS partition (is this possible with Grub/Grub2?) or else downgrading to Ext3 (= slower)

I've scheduled a task in gnome-schedule to run at each reboot. When I click on "preview task" it initiates a one-time run just fine. However, after reboot it just doesn't want to start the task.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).
I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.
Here is what I have in /etc/network/interfaces for the wireless interface code...
So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?

I wanted to switch to Linux from Windows so I decide to install Debian. The installation completed successfully but after that the bootloader doesn't show after the system reboot. So it is just black screen. I have an option for booting Debian (which will go to a black screen) and go to command line which looks like command prompt in Windows. I tried going to the command and it shows
grub>
I don't know which command to input since I'm a newbie and not familiar with Linux. I installed Debian from USB using unetbootin. What I should do to successfully install Debian?
