Ubuntu :: Booting Into Win 7 After Install?
May 25, 2011I installed Ubuntu 10.10 along side of Win 7 and now I can't boot into Win 7. (Win 7 is listed on boot menu, but is not accessible).
How do I fix this? I need to access Win 7.

I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:
SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE
I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
After I've installed OpenSuse i don't get to desktop, instead i get to this: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
And that's all i get. If i login i just get to do commands. I'm a first timer so I have no freaking idea what I'm doing wrong. I just want to get to desktop.
im installing ubuntu 10.04 on intel mother board. it is installing everything good. after completing the installation system is rebooting and then after restart it is not booting just strucked as blank.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYet another "dual XP+Ubuntu" boot problem for everyone.
My neighbor wanted to try out Linux as he did not want to pay for Windows 7, so I offered to install Ubuntu as a dual boot. Ubuntu 9.10 boots and works fine, but now Windows XP will not boot. It just sits in a blank screen with flashing cursor after selecting Windows in Grub.
So, it is a Dell, originally with two partitions, one large one with Windows XP and a small one with HP's recovery partition. Here are my steps.
1. Using a Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit CD, I booted into a Live Ubuntu session.
2. Using GParted, I resized the Windows partition.
3. Installed / on the free space, did updates.
4. Delivered to neighbors house, showed them Ubuntu, and when I tried to restart into XP from Grub, I get a blank screen with flashing cursor.
I looked at the SuperGrubDisk and it seems to only work with Grub1, so I did not want to try as at least one OS boots and I did not want to risk messing up Ubuntu as well.
I have installed 10.04 Netbook remix, installation went find and rebooted..Now all i get is a black screen after bios finished loading. I guess it is something with the bootloader
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed server 10.10 64 bit edition on my server and I'm not able to boot from the hard drive. It just sits with a blinking cursor. Does anyone know what's going on or heard of this before? If I screwed something up during the install I can redo it, but I did ask it to install the boot loader. I know I have the correct hard drive selected as the boot device in the bios as well.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been looking into installing a HASP HL key on Ubuntu and it required an upgrade so I upgraded to 10.10, I downloaded the correct packages it asked for in the package manager when it finished downloading and installing it needed to restart so it did, since I'm dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04, I choose Ubuntu in the selection menu, after that it says:
error: unknown command ' loadfont ' .
error: file not found.
I haven't done anything at all really since I don't know a lot about Linux.
Im trying to get this HASP key working because of work.

I wanted to install only Ubuntu 10.04 (no windows) , I installed 10.04 Ubuntu and installation went fine. While booting up, it says boot device not detected. Then I tried to boot from CD, and checked /boot/grub folder, only 1 file is there grubenv. I hope I should have bunch of files in /boot/grub path.
So it looks grub2 was not installed properly. Then I followed instructions from [url] , still not able to resolve the issue.
Im trying to install ubuntu studio 11.04on my new dell. it finishes and boot, just incredibly slow. maybe 10 min to load after login. im able to update, i thought maybe it would fix it with driver updates. still nothing. the only thing i did so far was "pci=noacpi". and that did nothing.
Here is my system.

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Just sucessfully installed a sual boot with 11.2/ubuntu 10.4. 11.2 was installed first, than ubuntu. ubuntu recognizes and displays 11.2 on its bootloader, 1..2 does ot show ubuntu on its boot menu. so this mean I have to edit menu.lst and physically add the menu entry (root, load the kenel, and load initrd)....correct?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.
I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.
First, a little background:
Laptop at issue: Toshiba Qosmio G25-av513
CD/DVD drive: Matshita DVD-RAM uj-845s
I attempted to do a proper install of Ubuntu 11.04 via booting of off CD. This failed because my CD/DVD drive is quirky and does not like burned CDs, though it likes factory pressed CDs just fine. I reattempted using a burned DVD, which almost worked, but my quirky drive just couldn't quite handle it. Replacing this drive is currently not an option, as I have no money for such things at this time.
I updated the CD/DVD drive firmware to 102D (apparently the most recent), but to no avail. I am comfortable with tearing apart electronics, so if anyone has knowledgeable suggestions about any kind of maintenance I could do to the drive I would be happy to hear it. Also, a (cheap!) factory pressed Ubuntu CD could work as well. Are such things available?
I further attempted booting via flash drive, but this failed as well, despite changing BIOS settings. If anyone has any useful suggestions on this, I would be happy to hear them. I attempted installation within Windows XP and was successful, though this is not an optimal solution. I have a second 60GB hard drive in this laptop that I would like to devote to a proper installation of Linux. It seems like I should be able to do this from within the current Ubuntu installation, but I am unsure of how to proceed.
When I boot from the CD I don't get the normal choices to install. The only 2 choices I get are;
"Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" and
"Live-Install"
I click on Live-install, and I get a boot loader box that has live-install in it and a OK click box i click ok and nothing happens.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S106 with a bad CD-ROM. It can't boot to USB, so I've taken to doing PXE installs.I had done a PXE install for 9.10. After the install, GRUB told me that it couldn't find the UUID. I was able to edit the grub config file and remove references to the UUID and it booted okay.I tried to do an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. The whole upgrade finished, and upon rebooting I saw the purple Ubuntu screen with the red dots, then a blank screen and no hard drive activity. I'm able to read the drive in a LiveCD Environment, but I can't figure out how to make it boot yet.
Fearing for the drive, I put a second hard drive in the laptop and installed 10.04 fresh, again using PXE. Same deal -- install finishes, purple screen, then blank screen and no hard drive activity. Here's a video of the laptop in action:v=T0VgfOA05T0 -- the status lights from left to right are "plugged in", "power on", and "hard drive".I feel like this is probably the same issue as before -- where I should go into GRUB and fix the issue, but I can't figure out how to get into GRUB in 10.04!Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? I have some data on the first hard drive that I'd like -- not irreplaceable, but it would save me some time if I could get the drive to boot. (I apparently said "yeah, encrypting my home directory sounds like a great idea
I recently had to reinstall windows on another partition on my hard drive due to there not being any good way to run unrealed under ubuntu (believe me, I've tried everything) Is there a way to install grub from windows without using a liveCD or booting to a USB? I recently did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 and seemed to have made a mistake with re-partitioning perhaps? I cant boot into windows anymore. I know all files are still there and intacct as I can access them from Ubuntu, but Something is wrong with the Booting of Windows now. I get to a screen which gives me system recovery options. When I perform the startup repair it scans for a few secnds and comes up with an error message "...System volume on disk is corrupt. Repair action: File system repair (chkdsk)...error code 0x1f" I even seems to have access to files on windows from this screen when I try a "Windows Complete system restore" It gives me the option to look on the hard drive or on a disk (I only have a Toshiba windows 7 upgrade disk and it doesnt seem to be helping)

I then changed boot order to first look in ID00 LUN0 ATA. Same thing..no boot of Ubuntu. On the other machines on which I've installed Ubuntu I have dual boot with Windows and have GRUB installed. I have an Acer Aspire One 751h netbook (no CD drive). i'm trying to install Linux Mint 8 via my flash drive (PNY 4GB). I don't know where exactly my problem stems from, but I'm slowly making progress to find the solution. It all started when I was trying to install JoliCloud via a Sandisk with U3. I checked the md5sum, and it was correct, but during the installation, I got an error that said something along the lines of "file does not match source". it says that I could have a faulty CD/DVD or bad hard drive etc. I tried joli, UNR, linux mint (7 and 8), and easypeasy. I got the same error on each distro.
Fast forward, I've now got the PNY, and I've tried all the above distros with the same errors. But before trying to install, I found the option to "check integrity of USB" or "check USB for errors" (depending on distro). with UNR, it tells me that the check found 2 errors, and LM8 tells me there are 7 errors on the USB.
I've found that if those errors show up, then its a good idea to try to re-download the ISO from a different source, and check the md5sum. I've also tried this, and get the same thing. Is it a bad ISO, do I have a bad hard drive, or is my USB a piece of junk? Should I just keep downloading random distros until I find one that doesn't show any errors on the USB?
One last question, and I'll leave you guys alone. I've got an old MP3 player with a busted screen (hence, useless as an mp3 player). Can I load an ISO onto it, and then install it to my laptop? I started to use the Universal USB installer program from pendrivelinux, but it said that basically the MP3 player won't be bootable. This was after I formatted it to FAT32. Is there any way I can make it bootable?
The hardware is a psystar box with 2 drives for os x and ubuntu respectively. I attempted install of ubuntu over older version of xubunut without physically disconnecting the os x drive After install I could not boot into either system. THEN I remembered something about the install problem that 10.4 has and installed ubuntu again, this time following the instruction regarding booloader install. Now I can boot ubunut fine, but of course when I select drive holing os x it hangs on 'Verifying DMI pool data....' I've been looking at some thread on here about dual boot problems with Win7 and such, but are any of the recommended diagnostic and repair steps relevant to my case, specifically testdisk and bootinfo scripts?
