Im not to sure where to post this, but i upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.l0 and it gets stuck at the bootscreen, i followed the instructions on how to do a upgrade. Im not to sure whats caused it or how to solve it, and i dont really want to reinstall 10.04 as i forgot to backup my files
View 5 RepliesAt 4:00 pm on 4/1/2009 I accepted the offer to dowload and install a number of small improvements. This has always worked in the past. This time there were a few problems with the install, but I went ahead and rebooted. It stopped at grub, stage2.
I am now trying the rescue feature of my install CD. I will report on this later.
As for the always possible hardware failure, I have a raid setup, so I was not expecting this.
I finally gave in tonight and upgraded to 10.04. When it went to restart, it wouldn't boot back in. I got the error: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/6cb7dd44-88ea-4345-a661-4bbd**** does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) (initramfs) Ok, so when I was upgrading, I chose to "keep the existing version" of the boot file or something (forget the wording, but I get the impression it's the menu.lst). This may affect things. Ok, so I'm staring at the (initramfs) line on the screen. Where should I go from here? I'm working with a normal ubuntu desktop install on a toshiba netbook (worked just fine with 9.10).
I just upgraded to 10.04 Netbook Remix.When I boot, it gets past the splash screen and to the desktop. Before it can load anything, it acts as if it is looping. The wallpaper loads, the screen blinks white and then it loads the wallpaper again... then a white screen, then the wallpaper.I've tried to bring up the terminal and can't do that. I've also rebooted in recovery mode which didn't help.I'm at a loss. I'm on a windoze machine now since I can't get on my netbook.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was running 10.04 Netbook remix on my toshiba Nb305 in a dual boot with Windows 7 Pro 32bit on a 1.7ghz atom processor. I have grub 2 running and prior to the 10.10 upgrade i had run all the 10.04 updates. The 10.10 update appeared to have run smoothly and seems to boot ok but all it does is load my old background picture from before and none of my launcher bars or top status bar(sorry if these aren't proper ubuntu terms but the side netbook bar for app launching and standard top bar), mouse or keyboard.
I do know things are running in the back as my dropbox has shown that it is updated files in the back (also telling me wifi works and settings transfered). The only thing i can do is hit the computer's power off button and get the standard menu options in ubuntu for that but i have no control as i hve no mouse or keyboard control. Also note windows still launches fine from grub so that is not corrupted at all.
I decided to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now upgrade manager is just sitting there saying "About 1 minute remaing" with "Setting up libapache-mod-php5 (5.3.3-1ubuntu9.1) ..." in the terminal.
There is not disk or processor activity.
Upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 has froze on restarting SQL server. Any idea what's going on because there hasn't been any error message yet?

That seemed to go fine, and was back in full graphical mode. however, now it boots straight into the console and I can't seem to get out. I've tried restarting gdm as well, but no luck.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu on and off ever since about 8.04. This newest release (10.04)... wow it's amazing. That's all I can say. The only gripe I have right now is that right after I select Ubuntu from GRUB, the screen goes black for about 10 seconds, then goes to the bootscreen. By the time it gets to the bootscreen, the bootscreen is shown for about 3 seconds, and then I get the lockscreen. I have a nVidia card with proprietary graphics drivers installed.

Now Fedora won't fully boot, and I'm just have the line that creeps along the bootom. I've tried a few things, but not having any joy. I obviously need to enter this passphrase, but how should I do this?
Do I go out any get some CD's to make a boot disk? Or is there a way to disable the graphical boot options from grub?
Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.
But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...
Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?
If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?
I did a clean upgrade to lucid 10.04 from Karmic 9.10. After the installation, the boot was stuck at the purple screen with red and white dots.I did this on Dell XPS M1530 laptop and there was no problem in Karmic.
1. I found a temporary solution. After being stuck here, I simply go to tty1, login and startx. Now, I could work normally but if I go to tty1 and then to 'Ctrl-Alt-F7', I could still see the purple boot screen whereas 'Ctrl-Alt-F8' brings me to the normal GUI. How do I get rid of this purple boot screen ?

bad idea to mess w/ a working system.
Anyway my system won't go past the "ubuntu" splash screen with the five dots. The dots just keep scrolling from white to red over and over.
I can ssh into the box.
Top shows "plymouthd" is running, about 5% CPU and stuck.
Installed ubuntu 10.10 without any problems. Everything works fine until i installed the ati display drivers. After this ubuntu shows me 3 different screens before login that apparently broken (see attachments). After the last screen the "normal" login screen is shown.If i dont use the drivers everything looks fine, but then my gpu fan (radeon 4890hd) runs at 100% which is a bit noisy.

Everytime I connect my Nokia handphone either as a mass storage mode (for transfering video/image) OR using my handphone as a 3.5G Modem.
While connected or even after I finished connecting my handphone for the above purposes, when I close down Chromium browser, the whole OS will freeze!! Neither keyboard or mouse would work. This thing does not happened if I'm using Firefox for browsing internet.
I have to do a hard restart to use my netbook again.

I have been trying to run python programs that use clutter in Ubuntu, but all programs end with a segmentation fault. I have traced this to a bug in linselinux1 (see:URL... I am using Jaunty, and can't seem to update to a newer version of libselinux1 which has the bug fixed because all the newer versions seem to be for Karmic of Lucid. The bug report mentions a fix, but it seems a bit to complex and confusing for me. Can anyone explain how to fix this? I'm doing a course in Python, and I really need this to work.

I switched this morning and forgot to back-up some of my drivers.. most importantly my wireless driver. My computer now fails to get a connection or even recognize that there is a connection it could well connect too. I have tried everyting every one has said before... i went in to terminal to install fakeroot,patch,bcmwl kernals and dkms ect ect.. I know that i have a broadcom bcm 43xx wireless card and that it worked this morning.. and that f2 and fn should turn it on. but nothing seems to work..

Is there a logfile I can check to determine whether the server was shutdown due to a script on the computer, a power loss, or someone hitting the power button? I am not by any means a linux guru, but I know enough to get around.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a truecrypt partition on an nvidia fakeraid raid0.ore there is no data recognizeable to ubuntu's kernel on startup and I think it is causing a big slowdown for me every time I boot up, which takes over ten minutes every time. Attached are bootchart results.What I would like to do is know how to remove dmraid from the startup process. I can't find any scripts in /etc/rc*.d and all of the information I can find on these forums is about how to enable dmraid on boot, not disable it.
Manually using dmraid takes nearly no time at all, which is what I did before this kernel upgrade since ubuntu didn't put dmraid in the startup process. I can't see why it takes dmraid ten minutes to detect raid devices now! The only clue I can see is that in the startup process with the splash screen disabled it talks about examining inodes on both drives in the array and then goes on to spit out stuff about raid 0, raid1, raid2, raid3, raid4 and on and on so it seems like it is loading raid arrays that don't exist and never have.If any bootchart gurus have any advice, please feel free to throw me a bone, I am in fear of restarting!edit: for some reason ubuntuforums shrank my images so that they are unreadable by anybody except those with a large projector.
